Word is Greg didn’t even want to make Kitchens his OC when Haley and Hue were fired, so maybe Kitchens thought turnabout is fair play. I mean, if they hired you for a job, would you want a mediocre employee on your staff that didn’t even want you to begin with?

Either way, of course you don’t put Kitchens in as interim HC when you already have a guy on your staff with HC experience. Let him be the figure head as he has been through those waters, and let your real coaches do the coaching.

It’s a smart move. Kitchens isn’t some wonder kid type, he is a seasoned coach who has worked with Parcells, Arians, and Haley. It was his offense that turned that team around, and it was his relationship with Mayfield that won him the job.

Let’s not kid ourselves, Greg Williams is a crap coach, and a crap coordinator. He didn’t earn that job.
5-3 in his record as the interim HC for the Browns. That might earn him a place in the Browns Ring of Fire, next to Bernie Kozar....

Geez, EC, I've enjoyed your contributions here but it seems you are still carrying some BountyGate stigma here. Gregg Williams may not be the best person for the Browns HC spot but he is far from a 'shit coach'.

Well said man. While Greg Williams cursing and yelling style might work for a young, inexperienced team — that message gets old very quick. The Browns want to build this team for years to come. You need ACTUAL coaching and development for your players. i.e. the difference between McVay/Wade type of staff and Fisher/Williams staff.

Also, keep in mind this is Kitchens team now. He has EVERY RIGHT to bring in his own guys and who he thinks are the right people for his staff.

Wow, that's pretty screwed up on Williams part, if true. Why wouldn't he want Kitchens to be OC after the results he had last year?

That being said, I won't call Williams a crap coach, at least not as DC. I get you are probably pissed at BountyGate, but don't forget Williams is the guy who threw a blitz a Peyton Manning on a crucial third down in the Super Bowl (usually an absolutely suicidal move) that turned into Tracy Porter's game-sealing pick six. So yeah, he was part of Bountygate, but he was also part of the best moment in Saints franchise history.

Kitchens did a good job once they removed Hue's oversight. But he's still extremely green, just like the hire the Packers made. Hiring a head coach already comes with considerable risk, but IMO these inexperienced types (inexperienced even as OCs) are going to have a very high rate of failure.

I think the Browns are limited by their owner tbh. But that said they do have a solid GM now, so maybe they can build something under this guy. Gonna be interesting to see how it works out, but I do think they should have hired McCarthy or gone with more experience.

This QB class has a lot of concerns. Going to be interesting to see what their approach is.

Why didnt they name him the interim coach to begin with?

So William's is better as an interim coach than our future head coach whom is already on the staff? Wtf?

They wanted him to concentrate on the offense and Mayfield. Seemed to work out well.

what a dumpster fire. I would have kept Williams the guy can coach, he got the most out of their team when he filled in as HC

See below. That's why he got hired and Williams got fired.

Also the Browns D was 21st in points allowed. Williams wasn't doing a good job.

The Browns offense exploded under Kitchens' guidance, who unleashed a diverse, multifaceted attack that had defenses running in circles. Cleveland averaged 23.8 points per game with Kitchens calling the plays and scored on 79.2 percent of their red zone trips.

The rapport with rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield obviously played a huge role in the Browns electing to hand Kitchens the top job after just eight career games as a play-caller. The quarterback threw for 2,254 yards, 19 of his rookie-record 27 TD passes, and was sacked just five times as the Browns went 5-3 down the stretch. According to Next Gen Stats, Mayfield was more effective on deep passes (20+ air yards) when Kitchens began calling plays, throwing seven deep TD passes since Week 9 (tied for most in the NFL). The dive-bombing acumen was thanks in part to Kitchens' personnel usage and play design.

The Browns look to have my personal Trifecta now. After many, many years.

This is an ascending team IMO.

I don't personally like Williams but he does seem to get good results from his defenses.

I’m not bitter about Bountygate, and I recognize that he was part of our Super Bowl win, but let’s look at the facts,

1) he is a below mediocre NFL head coach
2) he is a defensive coach in a league where defensive coaches are being fired right and left.
3) his system works for a season or two and then it’s figured out.
4) he is more cocky than he is intelligent. That doesn’t play well when you need a level headed coach.
5) his side of the ball (defense) was worse than mediocre with seasoned players all over the field, while the offense was night and day since Jackson and Haley were canned.

Williams will find a job again just like Norv Turner, Wade Phillips, Rob Ryan, and all those other guys who are good for a few years and then run out of flavor.

Of course they hired an old school coach that’s been around for a while. Elevator is old school. That’s why he’s doomed to fail. Even old Pete Carol is more progressive than Eleanor.

I think Greg Williams would make an excellent coach for the Jets. I mean, who wouldn't love seeing Williams have to interact with New York media and fans. It's a match made in hot take media heaven.

24 points a game had defenses running in circles? Hahaha
