Sam could've been just as good if he didn't rip his ACL. I thought and he and Jeff Fisher would complement each other well.

And yet Jared last year had the same or better TD and INT % as when Sam actually played a full 16 games. Completed a higher percentage of passes and for more yards per attempt. Sam was sacked more and they each fumbled 7 times (Sam his 2 years he actually played 16 games and Jared last year).
and they had the same surrounding cast? I don't remember Sam having play action that worked with a Kupp and Woods receiving.... You had a good point about the lack of durability with Bradford when compared to Goff. Goff was great that way, but you can't blame Bradford for making a horrific filet mignon dinner if all he's given is Spam to work with, while Goff received Omaha Steaks with which to make the same meal...

Goff is very up and down, one week he will look like a great QB, the next week, when they get pressure in his face, he turns into a turnover machine. One week, it was, "I'm glad he's my QB!" The next week, "I can't stand this guy, he just cost us the game!"

And Bradford would still be playing if he hadn't blow out his knee the first time, IMO. That's not saying he would be better than Goff, but it's not like he was a bust because of his play, but because of his injuries.

Sam would have been a disappointment for a #1 pick even if he had stayed healthy. Some of it was situational. Some of it was Sam's mindset. Criticize Goff's turnovers all you like, but he had the balls to go for it. Looking back on Sam's career, outside of durability, that was the one thing he lacked. He played scared.

Right, Sjax had one good year....

Statistics won't show it, but I think SJ's best year was 2009. He was special that year on one of the worst teams in modern NFL history. He was the only reason we didn't go 1-15. I loved Gurley, but SJ was a tougher guy to tackle in his prime. And he had the receiving skills to be an absolute monster. But we had no passing game for the majority of his career.

Jared Goff ranked as 9th-best first overall pick of the century

CBS ranked all 20 first overall picks since 2000, excluding the most recent one

Los Angeles Rams Introduce Jared Goff

There have been 20 first overall picks that we’ve seen play in an NFL game this century and the St. Louis / Los Angeles Rams were involved in 10% of those. The Rams selected quarterback Sam Bradford first overall in 2009 and then traded up to pick Jared Goff first overall in 2016. CBS Sports ranked all 20 of those players and the Rams didn’t do as well as they would have hoped when they picked either of those QBs, but Goff has time left to climb.
And certainly others (Cam Newton), time left to fall.
Goff was ranked as the 9th-best first overall pick of the century.
Goff has developed into a quality franchise quarterback for a perennially contending team. After enduing a rocky rookie season that saw him fail to win any of his seven starts, Goff has flourished under head coach Sean McVay, who joined the Rams prior to Goff’s second season. During his second and third seasons, Goff completed nearly 64% of his passes while averaging 4,246 passing yards per season. He also threw 60 touchdowns against just 19 interceptions while posting a 26-9 record as a starter.
Bradford came in five spots later at 14:
While he never developed into a franchise quarterback, Bradford, the 2008 Heisman Trophy winner, put together a solid nine-year career that included leading the NFL by completing 71.6% of his passes in 2016. That season proved to be Bradford’s best in the NFL. In 15 games, Bradford threw for a career-high 3,877 yards with 20 touchdowns against just five interceptions.
The top five was Eli Manning, Cam Newton, Carson Palmer, Andrew Luck, and Michael Vick, which I think says a lot about the over-blown expectations of being the first overall pick. The expectations seem to be “This guy should be a Hall of Famer and lead his team to the Super Bowl” when the reality is so often that:
a) The NFL is hard.
b) Injuries happen often.
c) These players are going to terrible teams and it pays off to just start your career with a franchise that has less rebuilding to do.
Among other things. Of course, Bradford is familiar with b. Goff maybe found out “a” last year. As weird as it is to say that Eli Manning was the best first overall pick of the century, I have a hard time disputing it.
Goff was sandwiched between Mario Williams and Jake Long. At 20, JaMarcus Russell. "

A successful QB seems intertwined with a great Coach. Had Bradford come in to the organisation with McVay at the helm maybe things would have been different. I tend to think his body may have let him down anyway.

I liked Sam but Goff would be my pick.

I would say this is substantially my position. I just don't like the rank dismissal of a guy who was in horrific circumstance which Sam suffered and was ruined forever after. I am pretty sure that we are about to see a more durable Sam Bradford in Detroit without Sean McVay directing Jared...

Speed so fast you might miss his whole prime (blue font)
Actually, his ultimate prime was before the knee injury when he was at Georgia.

Look at some of those highlight films on YouTube when he was at Georgia.

He was out running cornerbacks on the regular.

When Gurley had his knee injury I thought his career was over. When Snisher drafted him at 10 I was in shock. He was a Great for The Rams as a draft pick.Never thought he would’ve been so good.Smart player & worked hard.
The RB contract was a SHOCKER. Yes he & Bell were the best RB’s in 2018.Just didn’t see why they did not wait another season to pay Gurley.Especially a RB who had knee issues & the Old rule for RB’s is 5 & Done.

BTW I think that Orlando Pace was a better first overall pick than both Bradford and Goff.
