Sam would have been a disappointment for a #1 pick even if he had stayed healthy. Some of it was situational. Some of it was Sam's mindset. Criticize Goff's turnovers all you like, but he had the balls to go for it. Looking back on Sam's career, outside of durability, that was the one thing he lacked. He played scared.

Statistics won't show it, but I think SJ's best year was 2009. He was special that year on one of the worst teams in modern NFL history. He was the only reason we didn't go 1-15. I loved Gurley, but SJ was a tougher guy to tackle in his prime. And he had the receiving skills to be an absolute monster. But we had no passing game for the majority of his career.
Steven Jackson was a fucking beast. He wouldn't let something like bum ass knees take him down. Everyone knew he was getting the rock and he still balled out. He was Mr. Ram during our last few dark years. I honestly wish we could have got him into the playoffs a few times. A Ram legend in my eyes.

This isnt a fair question. Bradford was drafted and inherited by terrible offensive minded coaches, and was Bulgerized before he could get to a better system. Now if Bradford had been drafted when Goff did and had McVay the majority of his career with our oline in 17 and 18.... I think we win more games in 2017 and purely on the butterfly effect possibly win the Superbowl. Bradford had better football knowledge, faster release, and when given the time was dead on in his deep passes.

Goff's arm is every bit as good as Bradford's was. They were similar in terms of size and accuracy. Goff showed far more ability to play under duress and to elevate limited talent around him. He also was quicker through his progressions. Plus, Bradford was coming off a season-ending injury. Durability is so important. I'd take Goff the prospect without thinking twice.

I think you forgot about Bradford's play a little bit my friend. One of Goffs faults was that he rarely made it through his progressions. Many times he stared his receiver down. That wasnt the case for Bradford. As far as accuracy, Bradford was also almost perfect on his deep balls. He had the highest completion rating of any qb while with the Vikings, had the highest completion of deep passes in 2016 (might be 2015) and also had the most completed yards of any qb in Eagles history while he was there as well as best passer rating of any eagles qb going back to 94. Now I know his time with the eagles was extremely short lived, but it goes to show he was extremely accurate.

Right but the question is who was the better first round pick. You’re just explaining why, in an alternate universe Bradford might have had a better team around him, better coaching staff, and stopped getting hurt and therefore played better. Which tbh can be said for nearly every single talented player who didn’t pan out in the NFL.

Fact of the matter is, the results and production dictate Goff was the better pick. You can explain why Bradford would have been better if this that and the third happened till you’re blue in the face...but that’s not what happened.

Goff made pro bowls, led top NFL offenses, winning seasons, playoff births, playoff wins, super bowl appearance. Those are the facts that is what happened. Now if you wanna tell me this was a result of the coach or the team sure I can accept that to an extent as I don’t think any team goes to the Super Bowl without solid coaching and a good team but that is also missing the point.

Bradford showed a couple glimpses and got hurt a lot. Never did anything noteworthy.

Btw stating what Bradford did for the the Vikings does nothing for his case as a better RAMS pick.

How can this ridiculous statement not be challenged? Or liked?

Funniest post I’ve read in a while...torn ACL’s and arthritis stop everyone. Only a matter of time.

So, Jackson had Wolverine-like healing powers?

This is a landslide. JG.
Agreed I don’t see how it’s close. I get a lot of people are upset with how things ended up with Goff and the Rams and I can’t blame them but in no way did he not outperform Sam fricken Bradford. People making cases for Bradford based around his supporting cast and ignoring the fact that he was constantly injured IMO is reflective of how people around here actually believe Goff had nothing to do with the success we’ve seen the past few years as if literally any qb could have played for McVay in this offense and had that level of success. Kinda sad tbh I get people picked sides but Goff did well for us and doesn’t deserve the irrational hate from our fan base.

Believing in Stafford and that he’s an upgrade or that Jared Goff is not as good as he seemed and that it was McVay’s brilliance more than our qb is fine. And there are valid points to be made for those positions. But for Bradford v. Goff to even be a discussion is ridiculous and indefensible. One produced one didn’t. One won one didn’t. people actually think JG was just a warm body and product of his environment. You have to give him SOME credit.

Goff>Bradford. Its a pretty easy conclusion for me. Goff has accomplished a lot more. And the biggest thing was his availability. Aside from the one game with the broken thumb you could count on him to be there.

I haven't forgotten about Bradford's play. Goff was and is far better working through his progressions. Bradford's high completion percentage with the Vikings occurred because he checked the ball down incessantly, averaging less than 10 yards per completion.

And your statements about the Eagles aren't remotely accurate. Nick Foles led the NFL in passer rating in 2013. Hell, Mark Sanchez had a higher passer rating in 2014 than Bradford did in 2015. As far as passing yards go, McNabb had more in 2008 than Sam did in 2015.

How are you supposed to diagnose who was the better number 1 draft pick if you cant observe the culture and surroundings they were thrown into? Makes zero sense. Goff made the pro bowl and got to a super bowl under McVay but looked terrible under Fisher his rookie season. Bradford didnt do any of what Goff did, but did get rookie of the year and played better under Fisher than Goff. Obviously the system is a HUGE part of how a player succeeds.

This is the source of the bradford stat I was repeating. Wouldnt be surprised if there are other sources with different stats that tell a diff story. Seems the case with most stats.

"Furthermore, his completion percentage of 65 was not only a personal best; it was the best single-season mark in franchise history."

Completion percentage is quite different from passer rating and passing yardage. And Sam's completion percentage in 2015 with the Eagles was only 0.2% higher than Mark Sanchez's that year with the same squad. Sam was able to post good completion percentages because he was such a conservative passer. He was Captain Checkdown.

You're correct, I thought I wrote completion percentage not passer rating.

Sorry but this is a ridiculous question. It's not really a debate. The fact this has this already gone seven pages makes me depressed for the future of humanity. :ROFLMAO:

Yeah it feels like people are comparing Jared's actual realized ceiling to what Sam Bradford's potential ceiling was. And even then it would have been pretty close. Although I was a big Bradford guy. But yeah Jared was able to actually show a couple of years of really good to elite football play.

Jared Goff ranked as 9th-best first overall pick of the century

CBS ranked all 20 first overall picks since 2000, excluding the most recent one

Los Angeles Rams Introduce Jared Goff
There have been 20 first overall picks that we’ve seen play in an NFL game this century and the St. Louis / Los Angeles Rams were involved in 10% of those. The Rams selected quarterback Sam Bradford first overall in 2009 and then traded up to pick Jared Goff first overall in 2016. CBS Sports ranked all 20 of those players and the Rams didn’t do as well as they would have hoped when they picked either of those QBs, but Goff has time left to climb.
And certainly others (Cam Newton), time left to fall.
Goff was ranked as the 9th-best first overall pick of the century.

Bradford came in five spots later at 14:

The top five was Eli Manning, Cam Newton, Carson Palmer, Andrew Luck, and Michael Vick, which I think says a lot about the over-blown expectations of being the first overall pick. The expectations seem to be “This guy should be a Hall of Famer and lead his team to the Super Bowl” when the reality is so often that:
a) The NFL is hard.
b) Injuries happen often.
c) These players are going to terrible teams and it pays off to just start your career with a franchise that has less rebuilding to do.
Among other things. Of course, Bradford is familiar with b. Goff maybe found out “a” last year. As weird as it is to say that Eli Manning was the best first overall pick of the century, I have a hard time disputing it.
Goff was sandwiched between Mario Williams and Jake Long. At 20, JaMarcus Russell. "

Not really fair. Josh Reynolds would have probably been the best receiver he played with.
Exactly.
Avery, Pettis and Salas didn't cut it.
We were lucky to pick Amendola, from Philly's practice squad.
