I was excited about the Staley hire but I never expected his defense to impress me this much in year 1 and to have a similar feeling about our defense's future as McVay gave us about our offense in his first year... what a special team McVay is building for us.

  • A’Shawn Robinson will make Rams debut vs. Seahawks

It took 10 weeks, but we’ll finally get the chance to see Aaron Donald, Michael Brockers and A’Shawn Robinson on the same defensive line just a few days from now. Sean McVay told reporters on Monday that Robinson will make his Rams debut this week against the Seattle Seahawks when L.A. hosts them at SoFi Stadium.

Robinson was activated off the non-football injury list last week but wasn’t active against the Dolphins. The Rams wanted to give him some additional time to get acclimated after spending the first half of the season on NFI.

Robinson makes an already-deep defensive line even better, likely stepping in for Sebastian Joseph-Day at nose tackle. The Rams will continue to rotate their defensive linemen with Robinson in the mix, getting Morgan Fox and Greg Gaines opportunities, too.

  • Robinson signed a two-year, $17 million contract with the Rams in free agency, which was before L.A. brought back Brockers when his deal with the Ravens fell through. Expectations and anticipation are both high for Brockers, and Sunday will be his first chance to prove himself to his new team.

I'm looking forward to seeing what the DL rotations look like this Sunday. I wonder if we'll see more 5-2 in running situations, especially 3rd/4th and short.

A line of Donald-SJD-Robinson-Gaines-Brockers shouldn't budge.

Robinson and Fuller returning along with an emerging outside pass rush could be the pieces necessary to take our D from very good to championship caliber.
Ya never know.

Woo! is right!! To me this a very big deal. A'Shawn may take a game or so to round back into full playing shape, but imo he will have a big impact on the d-line and the defense as a whole.

Robinson is really strong, really athletic, and has a championship pedigree with Alabama. Though he was picked in the second round he could easily have gone higher. 25 years old and probably has not yet played his best NFL football. Probably a mismatch for o-liners one on one, at least against the run, and is not likely to be pushed out of a play on the line. He will certainly improve the run defense. But he should do more than that.

A few things stand out to me here.

The Rams have several capable mid round linemen who they have developed and who are playing very well. But A'Shawn is a different kind of cat, a guy who has been a physical top of the line talent since he started playing football.

From a power standpoint, the Rams now a have a guy in the middle like Suh who really can't be pushed around much. That means the d-line will have a much greater physical impact on any offense.

From a depth standpoint, the d-line rotation now will be at minimum really deep and could be crazy good. Staley will also now have a big bag to draw from to dial up specific matchups.

A'Shawn is also maybe the very first guy Staley went out and got for his first gig as a defensive coordinator. Staley saw him firsthand in the Central. Staley seems to know what he wants both in terms of the kind of D he is building and the players he needs to make it happen.

Finally, A'Shawn will be playing with AD. Like others he will benefit greatly from this. But seems to me AD will also benefit a lot from having someone who will lock down if not gobble up blockers.

Ok, I admit I'm like a kid with a new toy at Christmas. Nevertheless, to me bringing A'Shawn on board is a very significant step forward for an already outstanding D.

I imagined Staley wanted a version of Harlem Nicks inside. I hope Ashawn can be that too.

If he is the guy from 2018 we just got a big boost. But going to assume that he works in slow as a rotation piece vs Seattle. Which is a good addition to a front that has been solid.

Good news and maybe the Rams are poised to seize this division at least I hope.

Definitely the player I'll be watching the most this Sunday. He's kind of a mystery with the apparent weight loss and looking more fit than in his past years. Hopefully that was a choice by design by him and Staley. Hoping he maintains his run defense ability while maybe adding some more quickness to his pass rushing skills being a little more light of foot. We just need one more person who can beat their man on the DL with a little consistency to make this defense lights out.

This defense is capable of being as good as we have had in quiet a while.
Just the defense and running game alone could get us to the playoffs.
I think we should take some of the pressure off of Goff for a bit
to let him regroup.
Just play sound defense and run, run , run. JMHO

If his pounds are down considerably & I would expect that AR might see more action @ the Brocker's 5 tech post. I have seen SJ-D lining up in the 5 tech with GG @ NT & Fox @ the 3 tech when the DC is giving the two aged vets Brockers & Donald a breather.

Brockers has been dealing with an unknown health issue for over a month IMO I think it's a turf toe but there's no info being put out. I base this on the last 4 or 5 wks worth of reported either held out of practice or Brocklers is limited with not related to injury.

That is my assumption as well. And frankly, I think I like the thought of that more than him playing in the middle. We need better pass rush paired up with AD and no other DL has been able to beat one on one very often. Just getting one guy who can beat one on ones at least some times would be huge.

Ya never know.

I guess my auto you is who is better. The Steelers held up last week
& Da Bears tried. The Niners have injuries.Just trying to think?

Tyler Rapp is starting to play & Kiser is back.Fuller has never lost as a Ram.When has been hurt The Rams have not held up.52 should start to improve, but is raw & a touch slow.

Troy Reeder went from 11 tackles & 3 sacks to not playing to not suiting up.
The Rams beat Washington, but Aaron Donald padded his sacks & the 9ers shut him out.So we can always look at things from different angles.

Will Rams defense be even better with A’Shawn Robinson added in Week 10?
LA’s top offseason free agent is expected to debut against the Seahawks
1605110716855.png

The Los Angeles Rams feature one of the NFL’s best defenses in 2020, the reward of being able to retain Aaron Donald (not so easy for every team to do considering situations like that of Khalil Mack and the Raiders) and acquire Jalen Ramsey to anchor that side of the football. The Rams rank second in points and yards allowed and may be the toughest teams to pass against specifically because of Donald’s pass rush and Ramsey’s coverage skills.

And yet it seems possible, if not fair, to say that LA’s most talented defensive grouping will be on the field this Sunday when they host the Seattle Seahawks.

Head coach Sean McVay told reporters on Monday that he expects both safety Jordan Fuller and nose tackle A’Shawn Robinson to be available in this week’s game. Fuller hasn’t played since being injured against the Washington Football Team in Week 5 and Robinson has yet to suit up for Los Angeles after signing a three-year contract in the offseason. Robinson nearly opted out of the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic but his agent worked out a deal that allowed him to be able to return midseason and that allowed his contract to toll another year.

Fuller’s presence should mean a decrease in playing time for 2019 second round pick Taylor Rapp and Robinson’s debut will push Sebastian Joseph-Day to a reserve role.

This will mean that the Rams secondary is Ramsey-John Johnson-Fuller-Troy Hill-Darious Williams and their defensive line is Aaron Donald-Michael Brockers-Robinson. Meanwhile, rookie linebacker Terrell Lewis has seen his playing time increase amid his own return from injury and that could prove to have the biggest impact of all if Lewis is as good as the Rams were hoping when they picked him in the third round.

Can LA be even better in the second half of the season? Right now, they at least have a few more options.

Wow, getting Robinson's debut and getting Fuller back in the same week is awesome, especially considering the opponent.

This is going to be a great test for our D. I doubt they can completely shut down Seattle's O, but if they can slow them down ... look out.

Probably. But having Fuller on the back end will help - as will having Robinson on the front end.

Very serendipitous timing for Robinson's debut and Fuller's return.

Really looking forward to our mostly fully loaded unit. :horns:
