I once got curious how game threads were as I am an avid viewer of college football and the NFL. One weekend I went to a bunch of different forums and they are all the same. Toxic toxic toxic. That is generally why I stay away from them for the most part.

Are college football threads constant "ra ra ra" BS? I don't care for college football so I've never engaged with fans of it.

I don’t think he’s advocating censorship.
Good intentions often don't advocate where it ends up.

But when you start with "hey we need to tone this down" then a while later it becomes "need to tone this down too" and then again and again, until before you know it the place fuckin sucks because it's homogenated virtue signalling nonsense where everyone agrees on one thing, that being victimhood of an imaginary group or level of behavior that kills the fun and interest of it. You essentially end up with Reddit.

This board has always been remarkable in its ability to resist that BS due to good mods who keep shit balanced. But just with the gameday thread one of the reasons it's so lively and real is that the mods sort of let the wildlife eat each other to some extent on gameday. And I think it serves a cool purpose on this board, outside of the fact that many of us, myself included believe it or not, have time to time opted out when it gets too absurd.

The GDT is absolutely pathetic. It's actually at the point where we need 2 of the. One for the current thread that is full of toxic waste. And one for people that want to enjoy chatting with fellow fans and can be critical but not be cringe worthy.
If only that would work. Unfortunately we’d be likely to have two shit threads and people complaining that they’re being oppressed in one of them. :eyeroll:
The GDT basically is treated like a real time vent thread by many people.

I dont often read it and have not posted much in it.

The knee jerk is comical however...its like people forget in one week how competitive an NFl football game is.
Yep
Rams ON DEMAND Rules/Disclaimer/Privacy Policy

6. This is a fan friendly site. We respect the team, players, and coaches. We respect cities; St. Louis and Los Angeles. Any derogatory terms toward other members, members of the Rams organization, or cities will not be tolerated. There are clearly grey areas but the goal is to keep excessive negative comments away from quality discussions.

Is this exclude from the GDT?

Asking for @Loyal
:laugh1:
We have discussed this many times. We have decided to give more latitude in that thread and the vent thread. We still do go through it most weeks after the fact and issue warnings at times.
That's a load of crap. Narrative build all you want.....complaining is complaining no matter how much you "Church" it up.
No. THAT is a load of crap.
I usually read the GDT after the game, and it never fails to disappoint. I have said it before, our goal, as men, should be to be in control of our emotions.
I’m good with people letting their emotions run strong. I just think some get carried away.
Entitled? Hardly.

How about spending a lifetime as a fan of a team with a history that could pretty much be summed up as "(nearly) always a bridesmaid, never a bride."

We're in the middle of one of the teams greatest stretches ever and still only have one Super Bowl to show for it. The bottoms falls out of NFL teams quickly and then it can take decades to recover.

Some of us would like to see another Super Bowl win or two and when what was looking like a very promising chance at that happening has careened into a fifth seed there's going to be anger and frustration.

With the heaps of praise McVay gets from fans and the media you'd think we'd have more championships in the last 10 years.
You mean you have more of a justification because our team has been more successful than most yet not quite as successful as 3 whole teams in the entire league? That’s one hell of a rationale for some acting like spoiled children.
The problem with that is not everyone negative is posting for your feelings on subjects. They vent their frustrations on a private forum so that they don't do it in real life. The fact that there are people that can't take negativity in a sports fan forum is the real issue.
Really? So without that thread, you would do what? Go rant and rave in “real life”? Have at it. I’m sure you would have all kinds of respect from those around you.
I reached out to the moderators and I guess they can't do anything about it.
It’s not that we can’t. It’s that we decided that we would allow more leeway in that thread due to the emotions of the game.

I think that’s a bit of a red herring.

It’s true we have allowed more than we would in other threads. But that doesn’t mean we are going to let it go elsewhere. Similarly, if and when we jump in to tell people to tone it down, it does not mean we will go further in the future or in other threads.

The slippery slope argument doesn’t apply here.

Say what? 10 teams have more Super Bowls than we do, including our most hated rival, one team that beat us for one of their six (that we could have won) and another team that started and ended their dynasty on our backs and we had to listen for two decades about how great that piece of shit Brady was.

That's some depressing ass shit for a fan to take.

This part is pretty accurate.

In the last several decades? Nope. Yeah. You can go back to the beginning.

That same team you talk about has had “a championship caliber team” for years but how many Superbowls do they have in the last 25 years?

You go ahead and be depressed all you want. That’s some next level dependency on a sport.

Well you're the mod in this conversation. So if you're gonna jump in and fix it have fun with that.

I'm just weighing in with what I think are basic truths of human nature. Whether I am wrong or right in that regard where I believe it all applies is when it's a reply to an OP who swoops in acting like McVay was assaulted. To me entertaining that is not just a slippery slope, it's a power slide.

I was definitely looking at the entirety of the team's history. But if you want to limit to just last several decades then that puts us into that nonsense in St. Louis as well as the short and abruptly ended GSOT era that should have also pushed out more than one title.

That same team you talk about has had “a championship caliber team” for years but how many Superbowls do they have in the last 25 years?

Thank god for that. Fuck the Niners.

Better than alcohol or drug dependency and sports provide a nice outlet for all the stuff I see and deal with at work, which involves other people's lives hanging in the balance sometimes. So yeah, getting depressed sometimes about my chosen team, rather than not being able to save everyone, without spiraling into addiction seems like a fair balance for me and my life.

FWIW, I visited the GDT for the first time Sunday, when they gave up the lead 20-16. Wow. No perspective, no context, just every player and coach were horrible and were going to get killed in the first round. But yes, it offers a forum for those inclined to rant. No one is forcing anyone to read it.

I think he posed a question and had an opinion on what is going on. Not sure how much power he was trying to slide in there.

It’s actually something that has been talked about both on the open forum and amongst the moderators for years. And yet here we are.

I really don’t think it’s too much to ask for people to maybe take a breath before saying some of the shit that is said in that thread.

We haven’t stepped in unless someone broke the rules and we’ve even let a fair amount of bending of the rules happen in that thread. And yet how long has that thread been running?

I can't find the reference, but long ago, I read an article quoting Marshall Faulk, who told the story of when he knew the GSOT was dead: a Rams fan approached him in a bar in Maryland Heights (St. Loo suburb), and ignorantly criticized one of his recent runs. Needless to say, he was very offended. The entitlement in St. Loo was off the charts, and soon enough, the wheels fell off. Fingers pointed in every direction, at Warner, Faulk, Pace, Martz, Mrs. Warner, etc. It was almost 15 years of high draft picks (several first overall picks) before we returned to respectability -- McVay's first season. A decade & a half of atrocious football, with only S-Jax to carry us through it.
Venting is one thing. But entitlement is another. We've been spoiled by 7 seasons of high-level success under McVay -- much longer than the GSOT lasted. It is VERY HARD to maintain that level of continued success in this league. There are 18 teams who'd gladly trade places with us today. Let's be thankful that, as long-time Rams fans, we are so fortunate to be watching meaningful games in January.
As we post in the GDT's, let's lift up these players & coaches who'd like nothing more than to make us all jump up & down on every play. Criticize the plays, not the players.
I live in Colorado and the Bronco fans are this times 1,000. The fans here are just like Dallas fans, they think every year is there year. Especially now with the #1 seed in the AFC. I think they will lose in the AFC championship game or against the Rams in the Super Bowl.

I haven't partaken in any of the GDTs but the one thing I have seen is some of the newer fans can't really relate to the tough stretches we've been through circa 2005-2016 where a winning season/playoffs seemed basically impossible. Watching this version of the Rams is an absolute dream considering what we went through under Linehan, Spags, Fisher, etc. Reminds me of the Meek Mill lyric, "I used to pray for times like this".

Ahhh

I'm from Trinidad Colorado and we still have my childhood home there. The Broncos are my second team, but the Rams are the go to even in head to head battles with the Broncos. A couple of my cousins live in Englewood Co. and are Bronco season ticket holders.

I find it somewhat entertaining, kinda a sports bar vibe with folks moaning and throwing peanuts and popcorn at the TV.

There is nothing rational about being a sports fan.:zany1:

I will say that the ignore button has made this forum much more enjoyable for me - there are a handful of people that just never seemed to make any kind of real contribution to a thread or discussion at all but sure could piss me off ….. I just never hear from those people at all any more.
I've actually never used the ignore button on this forum, but maybe that's the way forward.

Mate, I've spent a lifetime watching England. I was four when we won the World Cup. Since then, I've had 59 years of utter misery, never winning anything.

My soccer team hasn't won anything since 1974 when I was 12.

And I've been a Rams fan since 1983, so I've suffered with most Rams fans.

But I think fans of most teams become entitled when they're on a good run. They think it should always be like that and get especially whiny when it isn't

Then of course, you have Dallas fans who are just entitled all the time and 9er fans who forgot to drop the entitlement when they became shit.

The horns. LA la land. Fearsome Foursome, Gabriel, Slater, mccutcheon, Dickerson, Youngblood, SJax, GSOT, Everett (yes Chrissy), Pace, Faulk, Warner, Bruce, Holt, Donald, Gurley, McVay, Goff (yes Goff), Woods, Kupp, Staff, Whit, Nacua, Turner, Verse. Some bad stretches but no better team to root for in the NFL since 1972. Hooked for life and feeling very blessed right now.
