Seems like the retirement talk might be just to hold ownership's feet to the fire to keep spending on top end talent. Can't say I mind!

Was just going to say that. Seems like he wants to make sure the organization is still committed to trying to win and I 100% agree with him.

Can't say as I blame him - but, WOW!
Apparently, as is reported here, AD says he retires if Von Miller and OBJ are not re-signed.

Aaron Donald Says He'll Play in 2022 If

"If we bring everybody back, I’m back," Donald told TMZ.com (h/t Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk). "Odell Beckham, Von Miller, we bring them guys back, let’s make it happen."
If this is a quote from drunk Donald at the parade, it’s not exactly what he said and I think more emphasis should be on the drunk part, they were all pretty trashed.

Meh. Players say a lot of emotional things. I'm sure he really likes his teammates - especially after winning the SB. He'll be back.

We really need Von to take a discount. If he feels like he still needs to be paid like a top 5 edge guy, we are likely way out. Miller made 19m last year and the top edge gets 28m. Top 5 bottoms out at 21m. If he wants one more big paycheck, he won't be a Ram next year.

i said I was going to retire from coaching about 5 years before I did. Always said toward the end of the season
It's a long season,
BUT that itch kept coming back. that desire to teach the game and compete.,

It's a emotional drug that is not easily given up.

I don't think it's coincidence that this comes out after hanging with LeBron. I see Von and Odell with a lot more leverage too, that's fine, but what is the rest of the Team thinking and what are the salary cap ramifications for the Team going to be. I wish this desire for a group package had been expressed privately . But hey, maybe ownership can work something out, get 'em Chinese tennis shoe deals or something.

I doubt he's retiring if one or both leaves, but we should still bring them back and try to repeat.

The thread title is a bit misleading in that it suggests that AD stated that if they don’t return, he won’t either. I didn’t take his comments that way, and I really don’t see him retiring.

It's a no brainer. It was a no brainer before AD said it. Rams need both these guys to win more Super Bowls. Make it happen Mr. Demoff!!

I think we definitely have a chance at getting OBJ back because of the ACL but Miller may be a tougher one to sign

I have a feeling Miller may go back to Denver if they offer a competitive salary.

AD is going to have to keep harping on Miller to stay.

So use $$ saved on full OBJ contract to lock Miller in. Donald/Miller for another couple years would be dy-no-mite!!

Why would he go back to Denver after they traded him? Basically they cut him loose. Not impossible, and no no one can speak for Von, but most players in this situation would feel that they had been slighted. And Von seems pretty happy in LA with AD and company and a ring.

Donald definitely doesn't want to be double triple-teamed all the time in his 30s. I get why he wants Miller back. Von hinted that he would be back but also said he wanted to try free agency so we'll see. Hopefully something can be arranged.

Rams need to be careful not to turn next year's Rams into this year's Lakers. Anyone that follows the Lakers knows exactly what I'm referring to. While it's important to have your top players have some input, it's also equally important for our scouts and GM/HC to make that final decision and having players respect that.
Miller is getting older and OBJ might not be available until next year's playoffs if we even make it. You have to take that into consideration when re-signing these players.
Nothing is guaranteed

Von Miller will be 33 years old next season, and while he still has it playing on the same DL as an Aaron Donald, some teams may be reluctant to sign an Edge rusher with aging legs to a long term commitment with a big salary guarantee. The Rams should be in a position to re-sign him longer term, but with a back-loaded contract that we can escape from after two years, one that keeps his 2022 CAP fairly low ... it's really going to come down to the guaranteed money more than anything imo.
