Johnnie Johnson (the Original). #1 pick in 1980 and immediately stepped in for the retired Dave Elmendorf.
Johnson had an interception return for a TD against Snake Stabler and Bum Phillips' Saints in the final game of the 1983 season. Rams needed to win in New Orleans to make the playoffs; and did so 26-24 on a final play Mike Lansford FG. Those were the only points scored by the offense. In addition to Johnson's Pick-6, Nolan Cromwell had a Pick-6. Rookie Henry Ellard had a long punt-return for a touchdown, and Jack Youngblood sacked Stabler for a safety.
That was a great Rams' win. The Rams had won a total of eight games the prior two seasons; and were not expected to be a playoff team in 1983. John Robinson was the new Head Coach ... Fritz Shurmur became the Defensive Coordinator and went to a 3-4 ... Eric Dickerson was a rookie.
The next week the Rams went to Dallas and upset the Cowboys in another terrific winning memory.
