Honeslty, we had the recipe the last game, it was in the 1st half. The problem is we fell apart in the second.
IF we play like we did the 1st two halves of the last two games we can't be beat. We just can't turn the ball over. We do that and we're winning the SB at home!

Our offense is the key to this one. I think our defense will keep the score down, and they're playing well enough to where they should be able to stifle the 9ers for much of the game.

But the offense needs to overcome this defensive front. And the problem I think boils down to the fact that our OL has not been able to check their pass rush. They just win too much up front vs our OL. But in those stretches where the Rams are even trying to run the ball it's not as noticeable. So here's what I'd do...

1. Ensure you run the ball on either first or second down. Fans gonna bitch but too bad. That does a couple things, those being keeping them playing their run fits as well as slowly wearing them down as stopping the run is hard work (you gotta work off blocks, hold your position or lane, chase more, etc).

2. Some of those runs need to be draws. Nobody runs draws any more. But guess what: Michel would be a fucking beast on draws with his ability to break tackles and arm grabs and shit. And if you call them as soon as the 9ers quit playing their run fits you can get really big plays. Run some draws with Big 25 and you can do that instead of the stupid fucking screens we usually run when McVay doesn't trust his protections.

3. Use the fucking jet sweeps. It was so nice to see Jefferson get one the last game, but he's not the ideal guy to be running it. As I suggested in the other thread, McVay needs to draw up some 12 sets with AKERS as the jet action and Michel in the backfield. Make Warner choose.

4. Simplify shit for the QB. 9ers get quick pressures often vs our line. That probably won't change. So go easy on the 7 step drops where Stafford is trying to hold safeties with his eyes. Rollouts are better if the QB needs more time, sucks in terms of the timing vs a straight drop you can practice and have muscle memory for, but that's the price of playing this type of front.

5. Be patient. Take your shots. But don't press it. Play field position and know this is a dogfight.

And btw I think the Rams take care of business in this one. It just would be nice if they'd do the above and beat those fuckers down.
#4 is the best take

I've been trying to stay away from shows media etc. but nervous excitement gets the better of me. Sadly it's a mistake between this ticket crap and fan takeover and hearing over and over how the Rams have been out physicalled land out smarted hence the streak. The God damn streak it's all so disheartening I'm trying to stay positive but I get angrier each day. I really hate these talking heads but despise this whiner team more than ever.

Does anyone think while we have an excellent rush I'm hearing constantly all day how it does not effect or bother Montana I mean jimmy g. He is comfortable against us. So the question is does anyone think we should have hopefully brown out there and maybe hollins and blitz tha mofo more making it really hard ending drives throwing him a curve and possibly forcing turnovers because he is not used to that. I would deploy something like that more so in the second half or pick and choose throughout the game but the rams will need a wrinkle or twist to make this team uncomfortable we have to find an achilles -and expose it. They cannot account for everybody on a blitz with our guys and may throw his timing off or maybe at least get to him and crush him.

Just throwing this tidbit out there.

This season the Rams (including the playoffs) are 9-0 when Stafford does not throw a pick.

Ball security baby! That's a winner!

In the last matchup the 49ers had three receivers with a 100 yards or just under that. Shanahan will try to use the same Ram weaknesses to win. Morris has a tough challenge. He needs to hold them to around 20 points imo.

Be the aggressor.

We play way too damn timid at times.
Press up on their WRs and let our dline go to work. Don't play 10 yards off them every damn play.

Stop playing scared...stop playing conservative. Mix up the runs and use our speed against them....we are gonna have a tough time overpowering them in the trenches...so run OUTSIDE with some tosses and jet sweeps.... Use their aggression against them, and stop playing into their hands.

Stop playing not to lose....go for the jugular and take it to these MFers

1. Win the battle in the trenches.
2. Don't turn the ball over.

Those 2 things happen, it will be a comfortable W.

The most important thing on defense is penetrate the LOS. SF likes to set their RBs deep in the backfield so they have a good head of steam and can pick their holes as the run.

Getting good penetration will slow them down as they move left or right where your LB/secondary can get in on the tackle...BUT THEY HAVE TO TACKLE WELL!!!

We know the Rams lost the last game on TOs and very poor tackling, and poor OLine protection.

McVay MUST be smart with playcalls and not get too cute. Short to medium routes so Stafford can get the ball off quickly.. Control tempo with some no huddle...and please get in some RB screens and sweeps.

I believe OBJ is gonna be on a mission in this game too because they shut him down last game.

I'd like a convincing win...BUT JUST WIN!!!

GET 'ER DONE RAMS!!!

Last night I went back and watched the Rams Niners game from week 18 and also watched the Niners Packers playoff game.

A few thoughts:

1. You cannot run on the Niners. Period. Don’t beat your head against the wall. Mcvay gets this. Some of you need to accept it.

2. You can beat the Niners in the pass game. They have some weaknesses in coverage but you need time to throw.

3. Armstead must be double teamed. He has 5.5 sacks the last 3 games and will singlehandely beat the Rams if they do not double team him. I would bring Sony down to block or use a big set with Noteboom to pass out of.

4. The other DT’s (Jones, Streeter etc.) are monsters and need to be doubled as well. Our interior guys should not be expected to play the DT’s one on one at anytime.

5. Our linebackers need to beat the RB to the hole. Niners use of TE, FB and pulling guards are too good. The RB need to be met before the blocks are setup. Flood lanes early.

6. Niners runners have excellent vision and tackle breaking ability. Yes everyone knows this. But it means wrap up. I saw some Rams, no names mentioned, try to shoulder tackle the RB’s of the Niners. Wrap up. I wouldn’t mind Taylor Rapp in the game because he does tackle well and wrap up - no pun intended. Just don’t have him in coverage.

7. Kittle across the middle and on screens is the Niners go to play. Flood the middle zone and watch for the screens. If there was ever a game where we needed to go single high and flood the middle it is this one. Press the WR’s at the line and give Donald a chance to force Garroppolo to cough up the ball.

Bottom line: Pass the ball but double block the interior pass rushers. when on defense press WR’s, cover the middle with extra defenders and get your linebackers into the backfield quickly. Bring your big boy pants to tackle and as always do not turn the ball over. Throw it away if needed.

I think if they run duo they can get good yardage per pop on them. Where the 9ers eat our OL up is penetration on the zone runs. Give Allen a duo partner and neutralize their size up front. Mash with Michel. Rinse repeat.

That would be nice if it worked. They can always try different concepts. Problem is the Niners are built so strong against the run that you can find yourself in a 2nd and 14 real quick. Just like last game.

What I see is their front 7 are built with power to completely shut down the run. Then some of their secondary guys will come up in support and also tackle real well. They have no DD or Long jr. Their interior guys absolutely overpower our interior guys. Their linebackers hit the hole with power.

But their DB’s can be beat with Mcvays designs and our WR’s. I go strength vs weakness instead of against their strength.

This requires Stafford to be excellent and the Oline to get help in pass pro while playing their best game. But it is the only way to win from my perspective. Does it have risk? Yes. But we had success with it last time.

The problem is our interior OL. Need more toughness and physicality in there.

Edwards is still on the up and coming and is cheap so he returns. But Corbs and Allen are better than last year but not by all that much. 9ers blow both those guys up in zone. Rams run both duo and zone but honestly I think with what they have right now on the line duo is by far the better scheme because the double for Allen removes his shittiness a bit from the equation.

Also Edwards is far better driving than running sideways. At least to my eye. He's a power run type OL. So I think McVay needs to embrace the power approach in the run game for this matchup.

IF they get to the Super Bowl I think they will kill it on the ground vs both those defenses even in zone. But for the 9ers quit with the fucking zone run calls. IMO. Those are wasted plays.

San Francisco 49ers VS Los Angeles Rams

WHERE: SoFi Stadium (Los Angeles)
WHEN: 6:30 p.m. ET | FOX
https://www.nfl.com/games/49ers-at-rams-2021-post-3
One mismatch in the Rams' favor: Cooper Kupp and Odell Beckham Jr. vs. 49ers secondary

Against man coverage, Kupp has generated a passer rating when targeted of 150.4 while racking up 715 receiving yards, both tops in the NFL, per Pro Football Focus. Of those 715 yards, 100 came against the Niners (on six targets), who allowed 15 TDs with zero picks in man coverage all season (though they did use man coverage at the fifth-lowest rate, 20.3 percent, in the NFL). But the mismatch does not end there. Per NGS, Kupp earned 1,470 receiving yards from the slot this season, a whopping 409 more than the next closest player in any season since NGS began tracking, in 2016. San Francisco, meanwhile, has allowed a 102.6 passer rating to slot receivers this season (including the playoffs), ranking 21st in the NFL. Kupp has thrived in the slot against the Niners specifically, averaging 94.5 yards per game from the slot in the Rams' two games with San Francisco. (Kupp averaged 75.4 yards from the slot against all other opponents.)

As for Beckham, who was signed prior to Week 10, he didn't register much production against the Niners this season, logging just two catches for 18 yards in each game. He also hasn't been a reliable deep option for QB Matthew Stafford (Beckham has generated a 10.0 completion percentage on deep attempts in Los Angeles, with one TD, three INTs and a 43.3 passer rating). But he has been incredibly valuable on short and intermediate passes, generating a 73.3 percent completion rate, five TDs, zero picks and a passer rating of 134.3, the highest of any WR on the team. And his production has ticked up significantly over the past two games, as has the subsequent attention paid by defenders, meaning he figures to stretch the Niners' defensive backs (who are seen by my model as the worst group of DBs remaining) even thinner.

One mismatch in the 49ers' favor: Generating effective pressure without blitzing (complemented by a knack for executing quick passes on offense)

Compare Stafford's production this season when the Niners blitzed him to his production when they didn't:

  • FACING BLITZ: 158.1 passer rating, 2 TDs, 0 INTs, 88.9 completion percentage, 20 percent pressure rate.
  • NOT FACING BLITZ: 61.3 passer rating, 2 TDs, 4 INTs, 60.9 completion percentage, 31.4 percent pressure rate.

The Niners lead the NFL in 2021 with a 30.5 percent pressure rate when rushing four or fewer (including playoffs). With Los Angeles' O-line banged up, the Niners' ability to keep pressuring Stafford through all four quarters will shape this game -- especially because of the Niners' complementary ability to execute quick, effective passes on offense that exploit physical mismatches at the linebacker and safety level.

Against the Rams' imposing pass rush, Kyle Shanahan has drawn up a quicker passing game plan for Jimmy Garoppolo. When facing Los Angeles this season, Jimmy G's average time to throw was 2.37 seconds, while 62.7 percent of his throws were quick passes -- and he was under pressure on just 21.8 percent of dropbacks. Against all other opponents in 2021, his average time to throw was 2.71 seconds, while just 44 percent of his throws were quick passes, and he was pressured on 25.7 percent of dropbacks. And the Niners have had more success on quick passes against the Rams than other opponents have. Against San Francisco, the Rams faced quick passes on 61.5 percent of throws with 6.3 air yards per attempt while allowing 9.1 passing yards on average and a 110.3 passer rating. Against all other opponents, the Rams faced quick passes on 52.3 percent of attempts, allowing 4.0 air yards per attempt, an average of 6.3 yards per throw and a 93.5 passer rating. It's not like Garoppolo leans on play-action against L.A. While he has excelled with play-action in general, generating the best completion percentage (75.4) and most yards per attempt (10.5) on play-action passes against all opponents in the NFL during the regular season, his numbers when not using play-action against the Rams, going back to 2019, (73.5 completion percentage, 8.8 yards per attempt, 4.4 completion percentage over expectation) are much better than they are against all other opponents (65.3 percent completion rate, 7.4 yards per attempt, -1.1 CPOE).

Here's how this all works together: It's not just quick-release passes that matter, it’s also about what kinds of passes those are and to whom they are going (ahem -- Deebo Samuel, who ranks fifth in the NFL this season, including playoffs, in receiving yards on quick passes with 639, is a huge factor here). In San Francisco's Week 18 comeback, the Rams' defense did not adjust to the Niners' halftime offensive adjustments, and then their defense kept consistent pressure with four, which resulted in their OT triumph, pointing to another potential advantage against a Rams defense that was similarly slow to respond to the Bucs' halftime offensive adjustments last week.
