Nice outing by Rodon in the matinee today

8 IP 3H 0R
Not really a bad outing by Fried either. If Jazz covers first on that bunt, he let's up 2 runs instead of 4. But it's all over now.....meaning the race for playoff spots. Ours is set in stone. #1 Wild Card vs Boston next week. But I don't get how the winner automatically faces Tampa. What if the #3 Wild Card beats Houston (or Texas)? Shouldn't they face the #1 seed?

Are we going to see a division winner with a losing record?

I do not believe I have even seen a division winner with a losing record before.

That is such a pathetic division.

I think one of them will finish over .500.
Houston plays 1 more @ Seattle and 4 at home vs the A's.
Texas plays 2 vs the Mets and 3 @ Minnesota.

It could still happen
What I'm interested in is how are the Yankees going to set up their rotation? Right now they have Schlittler in game 1. Do they throw Fried and Rodon, two lefties or Cole in one of those spots? Of the three, Cole has looked the least impressive.

In his last 8 starts, Rodon has a 1.67 ERA, he's 3-1, hasn't allowed more than 2 runs in any of the 8 games, NYY are 5-3.
Prior to that debacle yesterday (which wasn't Fried's fault), he hadn't allowed more than 1 run in his previous 7 games....(1.49 ERA).
Cole, in his last 5 games, has a 5.34 ERA and has allowed 9 HRs. My confidence is waning.

Judge isn't on the playoff roster against Boston so our pitching is going to have to carry us because we'll probably only score a couple of runs per game

I think they've gotten over that hump towards the end of the season. After he went out this last time, they averaged 4.6 runs per game. Maybe it's too much to expect but I'm hoping for great things from our two youngsters (Jones; Lombard) and Volpe.

The Ben Rice Show starring Benny Barrels!!!
The homegrown show!!!!

Rice 4 for 5, 2 HR, 6 rbi
Lombard 3 for 4, 2 runs scored
Volpe 1 for 3
Jones 1 for 3, 2 runs scored
Wells 2 for 3, a run scored and 2 rbi

11 for 18, a walk, a double, 2 homers, 8 runs scored and 8 rbi.
.611 average
.666 OB%, 1.000 Slug%, 1.666 OPS
Wow!!!!

Add in homegrown Schlittler.....in 2 postseaon appearances vs Boston......14.1 IP, 7 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 22 K. Two pitchers have had double digit K's vs Boston in the postseason twice. Bob Gibson and Cam Schlittler.

Tonight is a special game for NY Yankee fans. It's not that it's a chance to eliminate Boston, something each team relishes when they can do it. Let's say, eliminating Boston is not the #1 goal tonight. Sonny Gray is on the mound. And Yankee fans remember 2018, when he couldn't handle playing for the Yankees. There's a long list of guys who put on the pinstripes and excelled above and beyond their normal numbers. There's also a long list of guys who put on the pinstripes and couldn't take the pressure. Ed Whitson. Joey Gallo. Sonny Gray. Perhaps the worst of them is Gray.

After allowing 7 runs to the Orioles on August 1st, 2018, he was booed off the field and gave the fans a cocky fuck you smile. He had one of the worse all time splits for a NYY pitcher. On the road, he had a 3.17 ERA and went 7-5. At home he had a 6.98 ERA and a 4-4 record. Clearly, he couldn't take the bright lights of NY. He was fine if he was in Oakland, Cincinnati, Minnesota and even St. Louis. This year, he had a great year with Boston, where the only pressure is beating the Yankees.

Tonight there will be a packed house hoping to see what they saw in 2017 and 2018 from Gray at Yankee Stadium. A tiny man who melted under the bright lights. I hope he smiles at the crowd tonight if the Yankees can manage to pound him off the mound. Of course, I don't expect that. He is a man and a professional and will do everything in his power to pitch well. I'll be satisfied with just beating him 2-1.

2 runs in 31 postseason innings over 2 years. That is what stands out to me. But Sonny Gray taking the loss is so much more satisfying.

I would like to add, after his marathon trot around the bases, I was hoping Bednar would have put one under Contreras' chin in the 9th. But of course, that was probably exactly what the hot headed loser Contreras would have wanted.....a chance to fight. I remember an incident from earlier in the season when he crowded the plate and started talking shit when a pitch that was 2" inside almost hit him. I excused him because his native Venuzuela had just suffered that devastating earthquake. After last night, fuck him. He's just another hot headed Latino.

The Red Sox had a weird season. They fire their manager 27 games into the season. They were 7 games under .500. Over the next 51 games they go 22-29, 7 games under .500, then meet the Yankees for a 4 game series in Boston. They sweep the Yankees to start a 32-5 run, getting them back into the thick of things. Then they finish the season 23-24. They give Tracy a new contract and take the interim tag off him because he took them to the postseason. They get swept by New York while hitting .117 and scoring just 2 runs. If you go back to the last 2 regular season meetings between the teams and combine it with the 2 postseason games, the Red Sox went 0-4 while batting 20 for 124 with 5 doubles, a triple and two homers while scoring 5 runs. That's a .161 average, .200 OB%, .266 Slg% and .466 OPS. They allowed 43 runs in those 4 games. I have to wonder do they have any sense of buyer's remorse?

There will only be 1 Boston Massacre and that was September 15th - September 18th, 1978. After being 14 games behind on July 19th, the Yankees inched closer to the Red Sox. Finally, they arrived in Boston on September 15th, 4 games behind.

They swept Boston 15-3, 13-2, 7-0 and 7-4 leaving tied for first place and eventually winning game #163 on Bucky Fucking Dent's 3 run homer. Outscoring the Red Sox 42-9 was the Boston Massacre. I have a shirt commemorating that massacre.

With all due respect to the Red Sox, they weren't a very good team this year. They started out slow, had that 32-5 run and then ended almost as slow as they started. Sure, the Yankees blew them out 18-2 but it wasn't a massacre. A nasty beatdown? Yeah, it was that.

So there may be a conundrum for the Yankees. Who do they go with in Game 1 vs Tampa?

Cole is the guy who was scheduled to pitch game 3 vs Boston, so why wouldn't he be the guy going game 1 vs Tampa? His last 2 games have been good (2-0; 3.09), but the 4 previous he was 1-3 with a 5.98 ERA. Boone better have Rodon in the bullpen to start the game.

Speaking of Rodon, he's 3-1 with a 1.80 ERA his last 5 games and one of those was an 8 inning win against the Rays (2-0). I wouldn't be disappointed if Boone chose to go with him to start the series. Boone might think about that but in the end, probably go with Cole.

Schlittler is scheduled to go Monday and then be available for a game 5. I would think Fried and Rodon would go in games 3 and 4 at the Stadium, short right field porch and all. But the way the schedule is set up with an off day between games 1 and 2, whoever pitches game 1 can come back in game 4 (Thursday) on normal rest.

The Rays figure to use right handers in games 1 and 2, so Boone can use his lefty heavy lineup. And even if Cash brings in left handers, the Yankee lefties have hit left handers well. They were 15 for 35 (.429) vs Boston's southpaws. 5 for 18 vs Tolle (.277) and 10 for 17 (.588) vs Boston LH out of the bullpen.
