I think the thought process is, Goff is 28 and has played 7 seasons in the NFL. He is what he is. He played pretty well last year, but, he is never going to be elite. That ship has sailed. Stroud, Richardson, or Levis still have developing to do and have the potential to be elite NFL Qb's. If I'm Detroit, I take that chance because they will not be picking in the top 10 next year unless catastrophic injuries hit them (a la our beloved Rams). Throw in saving 30+ million per year that they are going to have to sign Goff to and I'd be all in on drafting one this year, even if it involves a small trade up.

Well we'll see what Detroit's thought process is. I know what my thought process is......

He's played 6 years in an NFL offense (I don't count year 1) with 2 different teams and has suffered 1 losing season.

He's had three 4400 yard seasons and 32, 29 and 28 TDs. Not to mention some pretty awesome individual games over the years. Elite? Maybe not but how many "Elite" QBs have played in the NFL in the last 10 years or so?

Sometimes expectations are so high.....for 1st overall picks......some can't see the forest for the trees. I think he's been one of the good 1st overalls in a while. Of course Winston, Mayfield, etc might make it seem that way.

Hurts - man he had a great OL where he had 3 to 4 seconds on almost every pass in every game - I want to see what he can do if he is even pressured a little bit more (and if they can contain him in the pocket). Once he has been in the league for 5 years, I want to see what he can do with his legs hurting.
Hurts has come a long way. And personally I've liked him since I saw how he handled things with Tua back in the Bama days. I think he's got a lot of good years ahead of him.

I want to put my two cents in as well

Prescott - great athlete - cannot win in pressure situations
Jackson - one dimensional QB who has to have a receiver wide open to hit him - if you can somehow contain him in the pocket - he is done - seen it quite a few times in the playoffs where he played like shit
Hurts - man he had a great OL where he had 3 to 4 seconds on almost every pass in every game - I want to see what he can do if he is even pressured a little bit more (and if they can contain him in the pocket). Yep, yep, and yep

I don’t see any of them as having potential to be elite. It comes down to synapse and cognition. Stroud has wide open receivers. Richardson’s lack of production in college is unimpressive. Levis gets a lot of slack for coaching and losing key players. However, even when he did have time to make good decisions he often didn’t. The three may have some elite physical traits. I don’t think they have elite mental traits. That being said, neither does Goff, but he’s performing well for Detroit. It almost feels like a wasted pick for them to go QB early because there is a lot of risk with all three QBs you named. Two first round picks on the defensive side of the ball, like corner and edge could drastically change the Lions for the better. A rookie QB doesn’t move the needle.

I can't help but to question if the Rams even get to the NFC Championship Game minus the rushing exploits of Gurley & Anderson. Wasn't the team averaging like 5 yards a carry? That did wonders for the play action game.

Still, minus the Nickell Roby Coleman non-call the Rams probably see no parts of that Super Bowl.
If If and If

If Donald gets a hands to the fact call on that same play

If Goff didn't have his head twisted around on a non-call face mask at the 1 yard line - he gets in to the end zone

We can play the IF game all day long

Don't want to play the IF game. Just making a point. No one player wins anything in a TEAM sport.

I agree but he had such a team behind him. I want to see what he will do with a little adversity.

Will he make a throw to a player at the end of the game with only a few seconds left to get the team within field goal range to win the game with a defensive player bearing down on him?

You're 100% right. Just saying that Goff can step up to win games where the pressure is on him.

As a lot of people have stated - Goff isn't elite but he is definitely in that second level of QBs.

And I think Detroit should not draft a QB this year because I do NOT see an elite QB in this draft, just a lot of second to third level QBs at best.

That's fine. I'm just not really interested in yet another Goff conversation.

Well this was more of a what should the Detroit Lions do in the draft conversation and unfortunately Goff has to be part of that conversation.

And chill? Really? I don't think I was that mean?

I don't give Chills unless that person is being insulting.

The fact is, the Rams made it there. History has it recorded that way. Didn't win it but came back 3 years later to complete the deal. The NRC no call might be remembered by some but lately I have yet to hear it referenced by anybody not on a Ram site. Time has made it irrelevant, like the first time we heard of the tuck rule.

And yet in this very thread we're told one player didn't elevate the team to a win instead of the whole team and coaching staff doing it. It's all being put on one guy. Same old shit that we've heard for years.

Goff has played for two offenses which were face down on the floor-- the Rams in 2017 and the Lions in 2022-- and taken them to Top 5 in the NFL. It's not a coincidence.

Goff played arguably his best ball in 2022 and is clearly still getting better. He helped turn a bunch of guys in Detroit that no one had heard of into a serious, powerful, highly functioning offensive force-- the 5th highest scoring team in the league. If Lions had not had the 29th ranked defense last year they would have easily won 12 or more games and likely been the team no one wanted to play in the playoffs.

No one here saw this coming. But Brad Holmes was willing to stake his future as the new GM in Detroit on trading for Goff. It has paid off for him. Holmes is now recognized as one of the top GMs in the NFL, deservedly so.

Goff has been and still is widely underestimated, not least on this board, and given little or no credit for what has been an outstanding career. Most QBs get too much credit and too much blame for what is actually a team sport. Not so with Goff-- he gets all the blame and none of the credit.

But it will be fun to see what Goff can accomplish going forward in Detroit.

14 QBs (the Rams have had 3 of the 14) have been taken with the #1 pick the last 20 years. That means evaluators believed them to be worthy of that pick. 5 of them have more passing yards than Goff (25854 in 7 yrs). Eli (57.023 in 16 seasons), Stafford (52,082 in 14 seasons), Palmer (46,247 in 14 seasons), Alex Smith (35,650 in 16 seasons) and Newton (32,582 in 11 seasons). He'll pass Smith and Newton by midseason 2025. Who wants to bet the only 2 who might have more when it's all said and done will be Eli and Stafford?

I agree with basically everything you said however I do need to throw in the better the o-line the better the qb. Taking nothing away from goff but that's one of the best o-lines in the business so goff still showing he is who he is but had goff been under center for us last year it would be the other narrative. The o-line has a lot to do with it for any qb. I'd love to see wt an Aaron Rodgers does past year behind our online and behind Detroits last yr.

Goff is a good quarterback. No he's not elite. We all know that. But he's good enough to win games. He's proven that.

The way I see it, if you put give the 32 starting quarterbacks in the league the same good offensive line and the same good receivers he would be top ten.

On the flip side, give all 32 quarterbacks a bad line and weak receivers and he becomes bottom ten. He doesn't overcome like Mahomes, Allen, Jackson, etc. can. But give him time and he's more accurate than most.

yeah, instead of "poor matt, he has no time to throw and is getting mauled out there" the narrative would have been "goff is shit, put wolford out there, now there's a starting nfl qb".

Yet, Gurley turtles up in the NFCCG and Anderswn was ineffective. However Goff brought the Rams back from behind to tie or take the lead, 3 times in that game.

The fact that the defense couldn't hold the Saints on that last drive before the bad interference call, is not Goff's fault.

It's not like he benefited on one of his throws due to a bad call against the Saints for interference or for say a dropped INT. Goff did his job that day without a run game and no Kupp, in an extremely hostile environment.
