It's average for a QB with a bad Oline that is asked to pass more often than not. That includes QBs like Wilson and Brady this year. Rivers and Winston last year. And Roethlisberger and Luck the year before that.

His passer rating was 90 which is the long-term league average. Especially considering a good completion percentage with almost no long passes completed and the low number of throws in the red zone (two stats which heavily influence passer rating).

Brady and Wilson were significantly better than Goff this year though. And while 90 may be long-term league average, it's definitely below average this season.

If we look at air yards, Goff was near the bottom of the league - we can say that's because of the OL, but Wolford came in and threw the ball downfield more than Goff had in his previous five games combined. While Arizona was playing the run in that game, they have a very good pass rush and teams have been playing us within 10 yards of the LOS all season.

Brady was fine. He constantly under and overthrew receivers (and threw into coverage) but he also had the most talented WR group in the league. Goff and Wilson would have finished statistically similar if Goff hadn't had double the amount of fumbles. And that's with Wilson running a more aggressive downfield offense.

That has more to do with the game plan than anything else. If the coaching staff wanted to go downfield more often they wouldn't have run or thrown screens on third and long all season.

They each had 40 TDs, and both had OLs that we completely dominated. Sure they had better WRs, both had roughly the same running game, and Wilson definitely had a worse OL.

Goff just isn't close to those guys. They both led much better offenses, and in Wilson's case, Goff had much better talent/coaching combination around him

As for the game plan, like I said, Wolford came in and threw downfield. Goff had routes to throw to down the field - the third and long screens just as easily could have been distrust of Goff - after all he was close to leading the league in turnovers last year, so it's entirely possible McVay dialed those up this year to limit Goff's opportunities to make mistakes
