Larry Holmes was a family friend. My grandfather helped his family move up from Georgia when he was like 6 and the first thing he did was take little Larry to St Anthony’s gym to take up boxing so he wouldn’t get into trouble.

yep, my Pop-pop introduced Larry Holmes to boxing. He also asked my grandfather to be his manager, but he turned Larry down. He preferred being President of the church and Chairman of the county welfare board to being a boxing promoter. Was weird watching Tyson fight Holmes, personally.
I wasnt a big fan of Holmes early on as a fighter, got sucked in to the media hype on Gerry Cooney, Tex Cobb etc. He was so washed up in that Tyson fight, I felt bad for him. Hard to believe he fought for another 10+ years AFTER that fight.
Anyways, I became a huge fan of his later in life. Easton PA is just over the bridge from Jersey and I admire him so much for what he did for that town, he invested his money in to all types of businesses and created so many jobs. True champion in life

Awesome story Mack.
Was it your Grandfather who took him to the Gym or Larry's father. Just curious.

9ers are a prob for us because of the trenches. They beat us physically. Hopefully that changes this year but their OL is going to be tougher.

Amen, they were a sub .500 team that beat us into submission last year and now they just improved their line.

It is important to remember it's early though. Lot of time left and the Rams may clean up yet on those underrated additions.

I want them to draft Rashad Weaver anyway and with Floyd returning that seemed unlikely. But Weaver has the size to play 5T so maybe he's in play now. Of course who am I kidding we're gonna draft something unexpected at 57. :ROFLMAO:

He was rated in the top half in the league of all Centers in the league last season (top 10 in 2019 and top 5 in 2018) and is getting signed at a discount due to his age. It's a good move.
I agree it's a good move. This isn't the Mack of old but what irks me is he really fits Shanny so he'll probably have a mini-renaissance in SF which is gonna suck.

SF undoubtedly has the best OL in the division right now. We're gonna feel that shit. Hopefully we add some horses in that front seven so we can stuff that run game of theirs.

We're giving away horses for nothing instead of adding. Floyd better have a DPoY type season he is good against the run after all or so I read as justification for his big contract. They already manhandled us the last 2 years and just got better up front while we aren't getting better on the defensive front. All we can hope for is Jimmy G is his usual hurt self and Kittle suddenly retires.

Maybe they release Brunskill now. He’s better than Blythe.

Signing Mack seems odd. Brunskill has been a good center for them. Now Shanahan has two of Atlanta’s centers. I wish McVay valued the position like that.
with the way they've been injured the last couple of years I don't think they're going to let go of any valuable depth if they don't have to.

I get the concerns OS and share some of them in fact.

But one thing posters are not considering is that Floyd might get better. He is a high end talent and was taken high for a reason. His rush moves matured playing for Shula and that hop move in particular is nasty with his rangy build. I think he might get better still. And lastly his strength vs the run was critical to maintain.

For a team that we all know has to get more stout vs the run for the playoffs it would have been really bad to lose one of our most stout players vs said run right away in FA. I get that many here don't like it just like with Goff. But just like with that move the Rams are a better team now than they would have been otherwise.

And there's still time for them to round out this roster in fact have they redone Stafford's deal yet? That represents possibility for a second wind to fill holes or they can use it next year. No need to get our panties twisted just yet.

Just asking since some FAs are off the board already. Since the WR market seems depressed so far, what would you think if the Rams could get TY Hilton on a one year cheap prove it deal?

They did run it up the middle last year but against mullens the defense scored on a strip fumble and were ahead 20 to 17 with 3 minutes left despite goff losing a fumble, throwing for only 198 yards, no td, and 2 picks. The worst part about losing the last 4 to the niners is we were ahead in the 4th in 2 of those games and should have won at least 2 of those games.

goff in those 4 games, averaged 199 yards a game with 1 td and 1 int per game including 2 pick 6's in games that were decided by 3 points. Oh and a couple of lost fumbles.

I don't see the rams losing to the niners this year.

Just logging on, but super bummed about the Niners beefing up their OL. Trent's number also looks big, but the guarantees and signing bonus... looks like Paraag worked his damned magic again

My grandfather. He felt strongly that a young man should have something to focus on so as to not get into trouble. Larry had a ton of energy, so he wanted to set him up right from the jump.

But did they really? They are losing Garland (who at least played well against us) and adding Mack. Mack has got to hit the wall soon at that age and with several injuries. They are losing Sherman most likely, which is kind of a big deal. So, I'd say likely net loss so far for them. Ebukam is hardly going to make up for that.

And another example of why it was time for a change
