I just meant that big linebackers are usually coverage liabilities. There's why smaller linebackers like roquan Smith are becoming a staple to defenses.
true but what we had was that and we couldn't stop the run. If you can shut down the run it makes playing defense easier.

And your reply is a bit over simplified. The DB's can't cover TE's inline or RB's out of backfield all of the time. If you have a LB on the field that runs a 40 slower than 4.65 and/or doesn't change direction well, the opposing O/C will scheme to expose that player in coverage. Which means your D/C will be forced to play more Zone coverage. And, that limits the D/C's coverage and/or plan for certain opponents.
understood. Still we need to be bigger. Or if not, we need to have Dline that play the run and not always trying to penetrate and leaving huge gaps for the lB to have to fill. I know there are trade offs, but I think we have seen this act and it is time to change.

Rivers only signed for one year and is almost over the hill at this point. If he gets injured or very well could stink it up horribly like Manning or Favre in their last seasons they have a proven guy that can come in and play decent football.

This I can agree with. I am tired of seeing A. Donald penetrate through the line and then see the RB take the ball and run through a hole 3 feet away from where Donald is coming from.

My opinion on that ..... Stopping the run, in and of itself, is not an indicator of how well your overall defense is.

Let's look at (4) different teams, Rams, #1 run stopping "D" (Buc's), and the two Superbowl teams, Chiefs & 49ers .....

Looking at Run defense :
Buc's (First) , Rams (18th), Chiefs (26th), 49ers (16th)

Overall yards allowed for the season:
Buc's (14th), Rams (12th), Chiefs (11th) , 49ers (2nd)

Points allowed:
Buc's (29th), Rams (17th), Chiefs (7th), 49ers (8th)

By these stat's we see that yards given up in the Run game do not correlate with the most important one: Scoring. The Rams run D versus scoring is similar, but the other 3 teams are way opposite in both directions. The one pattern I see is where the "overall" yards allowed increase, so does the "points allowed". This is especially true with the Buc's. They're top in run "D", middle of the pack overall, and almost last in scoring. With the Chiefs and 49ers it is obvious that they don't give many "Big Plays" which lower the overall and scoring.
If we want to improve the Rams Run "D", I'm all for it, but limiting "Big plays" in the passing game is what will get the Rams to the Playoffs.

It does my head in. Surely the the lber can see AD penetrating. Why isn't he filling the gap?

Report: Falcons to sign running back Todd Gurley

The Atlanta Falcons are preparing to sign former Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley, according to a report from ESPN insider Jordan Schultz.

Gurley, 25, is a three-time Pro Bowler and a two-time All-Pro who was named the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2015 and the AP Offensive Player of the Year in 2017 when he gained 2,093 yards from scrimmage and led all NFL players with 19 touchdowns. The following year, the former University of Georgia star again led all players with 21 touchdowns.

One of the best running backs in the league since the Rams drafted him with the 10th-overall pick in 2015, Gurley has gained 7,494 total yards and scored 70 touchdowns in his five NFL seasons, the most in the league during the time. Gurley's 58 rushing touchdowns are also the most in the NFL since 2015, and his 5,404 rushing yards are just one short of matching Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott's league-best total.

It was believed the Falcons could address the running back position this offseason after the team decided to release starter Devonta Freeman. Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff has often added to that position through the draft, but Gurley is a rare type of player. With this move, Atlanta would now have an offense led by Matt Ryan, Julio Jones and Gurley, giving the Falcons one of the best offensive trios in the league.
Atlanta averaged 85.1 rushing yards per game in 2019, the third-fewest in the NFL. The Rams, however, have boasted a top-eight rushing offense in three of Gurley's five seasons. Gurley will also have a deep group of running backs behind him who should be able to keep him fresh when needed.
After becoming one of the most dominant players in college football just down the road from the city of Atlanta, Gurley is reportedly making his return to the state of Georgia as the newest member of the Falcons.

One year deal speaks volumes. Make or break for his knee that. Good luck to the bloke.
