My memory says Reynolds, but I wouldn't trust that very much. Whatever the case was, if we take McVay at his word, he said this year that Watkins spot would be filled in by committee, :football:that would likely include Reynolds and Thomas.

I was watching Reynolds highlights on YouTube and he doesn't separate. He has great hands, fights for he ball and high points it we'll, but most of his catches were with dbs right there. I am not convinced that they are ready for Reynolds to step into Sammy's role.

All the more reason to replace Watkins by committee.

Only 9 of Sammy’s wopping 39 receptions in 2017 went for over 20+ yards.

We think of him as separating deep but in reality the vast majority of his balls came underneath the coverage where he sat down in a zone or just caught a slant.

I’m not saying Reynolds is the answer because he hasn’t played a full year. He may be a bust.

But replacing Sammy’s production is overstated. He averaged 2 catches a game for 39 yards his last 10 games and 1 in the playoff game for 23 Yards

Mike Thomas is 6'3'' 210 lbs and runs the 40 in 4.4, Keyshawn Johnsons nephew and will probably duel it out with Reynolds for Watkins spot

Just saying thanks to all member contributions in this thread. It's been informative and "entertaining" (please note my use of punctuation  ) I've been working 10 and 12 hour days, and Saturday's, and starting all my garden plants and the expansion of grow room. It's been great to see all moves in 1 thread, and also to get some insight to what you all think. (Not that I agree with all insight. ) This thread has saved me a lot of "Google time," and much appreciated. Just another reason this site is a very solid and great one.

My 2 cents on not signing Sammy Watkins...... His 593 yards should be easily replaceable from JR or another, at a much cheaper cost. His receptions per game at 2.6 doesn't really stand out to me, as many other of his stats. The only stats that stand out to me are his 8 TDS and long reception of 67 yards. I'm thinking Josh can replace this easily. I could be wrong.

Maybe Sammy will become the elite WR as he was projected to be out of the draft. He's not shown it so far, and I'm glad we didn't waste the $$$ on him. Hate losing the #2 pick for him, but at least we'll get a #3.

From what I read, are we really trying to bring Tavon back at a cheaper cost? Please tell me this isn't true. Time to cut ties. His fumbles on punts prove he is no returner. I see him only as a speedy RB? It had better be a cheap price.

Cheers to you all!

Sorry Dag, it's true. He signed a restructured 1 year deal to stay with the Rams!

Mike Thomas was getting raves during mini camps in the 2017 offseason. Then his 4 game ped suspension hit and a foot injury kept him out of a ton of training camp. He barely got reps after that and Reynolds looked decent there.

Thomas deserves a chance to compete for the outside spot though I'm not sure he has the wheels to be a deep threat.

our Thomas Pro Day
\Thomas' surprise at lasting as long as he did is actually well-founded. After bouncing from junior college to Southern Miss, Thomas was one of the country's most productive receivers. In 2015, he finished with 71 catches for 1,391 yards and 14 touchdowns. At 6-foot-1, 200 pounds, it wasn't like Thomas lacked size and reports pegged his 40-yard dash time at his pro day in the 4.4-4.5 second range so speed wasn't necessarily the issue, either.

I have more faith in Thomas to desperate deep, and less in his hands. Maybe it is by committee. I’d like them to get a guy who has both. Pettis would fill that role. Hands and speed. I don’t know where he is projected to go in the draft.

@Dagonet my thoughts on Tavon are that they couldn’t trade him, but believe or know, that there are teams that want him. Those teams were relying on the Rams releasing him. That means zero compensation.

So they restructured him, which allows them to keep him through camp. If they need the roster spot, he is more tradeable. If no trades come up then release him. It’s a low risk move.

If he sticks and the Rams use like they did last year, then at the end of the season his contract is up, at the very least they get a compensation pick, which is better than nothing.

Now it is on the coaches and Tavon (who faces the reality of being out of work) to improve and increase his value to the rest of the league.

It’s deceiving because Watkins can separate and does scare defenses. They worried about him going deep. So he could put on the brakes and make a cut for an underneath route and get wide open. DBs weren’t right on top of him. I don’t think Reynolds can be the same kind of threat. He is easier to cover tight. Plus Goff has reluctance to throw into tight coverage when going downfield. Maybe he was told not to risk it. I think they need a different answer, that is not Reynolds. Hopefully he surprises me or someone else can step up, like Everettt.

I'm not sure, we've kicked the tires on Austin a while back, I doubt he has anything to offer anymore...
