With the 42nd selection in the 2017 ROD Mock Draft....the Miami Dolphins select Derek Rivers, DE, Youngstown State.
One of my favorite pass rushers in this draft, I couldn't pass him up. Some have him projected as a first round pick, some a third round pick. I'll split the difference here.
Why I like him: Rivers is a very athletic pass rusher who may be a little undersized, but he can play. He's a polished player despite his small school status, and has violent hands with numerous pass rush moves including a strong rip, swim, and a bull rush. He has the flexibility to bend the edge and turn the corner, and he's a sound run defender. He has immense upside as a player, and I think he can be a Vic Beasley type talent and a consistent 10+ sack a year player.
How he fits: Right now Rivers will play as a rotational pass rusher for the Dolphins, mostly coming in on 3rd downs where he can make plays. I predict our NASCAR package will be an exceptional success. Wake and Rivers on the outside, Hayes and Suh/Westbrooks on the inside should shine here. However, this pick is really for the future. I expect Rivers to add weight, and if he can get to 255-260 I believe he can be an every down player in our Wide 9 system where he doesn't have extended run responsibilities against large tackles. He's the eventual replacement of Cameron Wake, who doesn't have long left and should be a perfect mentor for a young pass rusher.
You can never have too many pass rushers when you are playing in the same division as Tom Brady. The more the merrier.

This game showed his athleticism, his ability to make plays in both the run and pass game, with a variety of different moves used, against quality competition. His ceiling is sky high.
