David Johnson limited with back injury

by Jody Smith | Cardinals Correspondent | Wed, Sep 12th 9:45pm EDT

Arizona Cardinals' running back David Johnson was listed as "limited" by a back injury on the team's Wednesday practice report. While the ailment isn't currently expected to keep Johnson out of the team's Week 2 trip to Los Angeles, any time a back injury appears, it is noteworthy. (Pro Football Talk)

Fantasy Impact:

The Cardinals offense was stagnant in Week 1, but Johnson did score the club's lone touchdown. The Rams' front seven will offer another strong challenge for Arizona's offense this week, so while nobody is sitting Johnson, he could have another quiet performance in Week 2.

DC Holcomb called all D plays. He got schooled. Rookie DC lumps.
OC McCoy called all O plays. He got schooled too. Which is Really Bad considering his background.

To the Coaches; This is Not the Panther's or Chargers roster, this is the Cards Roster. Play to the rosters' strengths not it's weaknesses.
-------------
If the Team can hang on for even 2 qtrs sunday at LA., like the Raiders did, it will be something to build on.

But...., if they play the same in the 1st half like they did against the Skins, it could be another 58-0 Seattle type drubbing. And the roof will cave in.
-------------

At least Cards fans are living in reality compared to the Raiders lol. Almost feel bad for them. But if the Cards have anything going for them it's that they have a new staff and play callers. So maybe they can pull off a respectable first half like the Raiders did. Until half time when McVay and Wade do their Good Will Hunting equations in the locker room and we destroy them in the second half. But even that is probably too much hope for these poor Cards fans.

(52:28) Looking ahead to the Rams.

Do us fans a favor and show some emotion. At least act like you give a shit. Warner had plenty of bad days in a Cards Jersey but fans love him because he never gave up. Show us you care Sam, or step aside and let Rosen take his lumps.

The rookie center will have his work cut out for him
-------------
He might be our best lineman.
-----------
Todd Gurley is going to run for 200+ yards on Sunday against the Cardinals. Our defense cannot stop the run. I just might bet against the Cardinals if the spread is under 12 points.
-------------
On a serious note, the Rams have really struggled to win games at the LA Coliseum since the move including last years McVay team. Only 3 wins there last season.

Honestly it's probably better you guys are traveling. LA has now won 9 of their last 10 games AWAY from the Coliseum.
--------------
What are Cardinals' fans going to say when Robert Nkemdiche has more sacks than Suh and Darnold, combined, after Sunday's game? (Call your bookies).
--------------
They will say thank god Suh and Donald didn't dress for this game.
-------------
Jared Goff was considered a potential enormous bust at the beginning of last season. The Rams made a ton of roster moves and rebuild their line and receiving corps on the fly that offseason—three new starters I think—while shuffling their linebacker corps as well.

They basically rebuilt in one year around Gurley and almost nothing else.
-------------
The offense yes, but the defense was already really talented it just finally played up to its talent level because of better coaching IMO.

The offense they apparently added 2 starters on the OL, got Gurley healthy, and added Wr's (Kupp, Woods etc).

https://www.si.com/nfl/2017/06/02/los-angeles-rams-offseason-grades-free-agency-nfl-draft

Obviously the improvement of Goff was huge he was terrible as a rookie, he had one of the more incredible one year turnarounds in recent history. 5 td' to 7 int as a rookie, 28 to 7 in year 2, passer rating from 63 to 100.

So yeah they did a tremendous job rebuilding the offense but they already had the 2 key pieces, Gurley and Goff, they just got both of them coming into their own in the same year. Which I would agree is largely due to the players they put around them on the OL and WR.

The Rams always had talent they were just terribly coached. We at least in 1 game are neither well coached, or talented.
--------------
If Suh and Donald are double teamed, Brockers is coming..or a LBer blitz. Can't double everybody.

I think it will be real interesting to see if the Rams come out faster in the 1st half than they did Monday...If they do, this thing could be over at the half...

Good read, they're pretty well grounded in what they have in their team. It's hard to imagine the Cards winning this game. But you never know in the NFL, particularly in a division game, and yes the Rams aren't really at their best thus far when they're in the coliseum.

Bad thing for the Cards is McVay is going to be irritated by his offensive production in game one. No way he was satisfied by that. So I have to think he puts a lot of effort into getting that unit rolling vs the Cards. Looks like a really bad matchup for Arizona.

Their unimaginative offense is probably going to be destroyed by Wade and crew. Honestly they have to run the ball well to have a chance. If they do that and their defense can get off the field enough it'll be a good game. Unlike some I actually have a lot of respect for McCoy as an OC, think he's one of the better ones. But this is a really tough matchup for them if they can't get that ground game going.

I certainly hope not. Else we really are in trouble.
---------------
You should be.
---------------
Oh please we about to get lit up by 20 by the Rams
-------------
I don’t think you are allowed to butt heads in today’s NFL. Just sayin’. Head up and to the side.
-------------
http://arizonacardinals.freeforums.net/thread/446/week-2-game-plan

Week 2 game plan

will the game plan change for the offense?
will the game plan change for the defense?

offense, I don’t think the team can change much.. As long as Bradford is qb, it’s the dink “n” dunk. I’m afraid the best we can hope for is better execution, and possibly better play from the TE’s..

defense, there are some adjustments that can be made. If the team falls behind early, I hope they will go after the QB..Blitz, Blitz and Blitz some more!! There has to be something that will inject energy into the squad or it will be a long season.
--------------
Everything you did last week on O and D, do the opposite this week.
-------------
The Rams are a Juggernaut. It's just best to lay down and hope that you don't get hurt. j/k
-------------
It's frightening to think of the possibilities that the Rams possess on defense. They have a very aggressive secondary to go along with what they have up front.

They know Bradford is a tin man who cannot and will not set up shop in the pocket to look more then 20 yards downfield. They will bring everyone up and not worry at all about their back end. Who could possibly beat them down the field?

It's going to be very ugly for Bradford. At least I predict he gets hit multiple times this game which will give us some indication whether he can absorb a hit.

As for our D they need to figure things out quickly. Gurley is probably salivating at the possibilities.

This looks as ugly as it can on paper. Thankfully they do have to play the game so who knows? Do you believe in miracles?
------------
The raiders gave them some problems till the 4th quarter.

Noticeably in the 1st half their D was getting gashed by Marshawn.

I think with Mccoy and Bradfords dysfunction, the game plan might have to be smash run all day. Even if we get behind. Run run run. Because we cant throw on those DBs.
--------------

--------------
Yeah, whoever is starting Gurley in fantasty this week will probably cash-in in points.
--------------
The Rams are going to expose the heck out of Deone. There's no way they missed that on tape. Expect heavy runs to the left with pulls to punish. They are also licking their chops seeing us with 3 safeties in most of our sets. This "small ball" is going to get annihilated by their maulers and the offensive prowess of McVay.

I say if they win by airing it out, so be it. But they should NOT win by running the ball. I'm a firm believer in Belichick's philosophy to eliminate their best player. Therefore, Gurley needs our undivided attention. Something we foolishly didn't do against Thompson last week.

Put our best run stopping LBs in (so not Deone) and let our safeties fly around and punish the heck out of their WRs. Get some penalties but send some messages early. Hopefully we can generate enough pressure on Goff to rattle him.

Offensively our greatest asset is DJ behind that Oline. Our weakest is Bradford. So run the air out of the football. If we pick up enough first downs we can give our D enough rest to play at full strength.

On 3rd and long? Run it. Why? Because Bradford's only going to throw it 5 yards anyway and forfeit the shot at a 1st down. Might as well pick up some yards and use up some clock.

Gotta hope for some luck on TOs and maybe a PR by Kirk.
------------
If I was Wilks & McCoy, I'd call at least 50 pass plays on Sunday. Turn the game into a track meet. Create space for receivers, stretch the field in all directions. Wilks has three QBs. Use them all if necessary. Control the clock? Phooey. Control the scoreboard? Yes!!!

The Rams are not unbeatable as evidenced by the Raiders effort last week. But Wilks & McCoy have to put more than 6 measily points on the board to have a chance in this next one.
--------------
put in the cheerleaders. they can lose just like the real team but work much cheaper. with what we save on the cap the nfl is gonna force us to spend a ton to make up for it and we can use the money to buy a real coach and gm and some free agents to get the job done next year maybe.

last week was an embarrassment. and all the coach seen was trying too hard, doing too much, way more than enough. he made, cant remember if it was bugel or tobin, seem like a pessimist. there was nothing positive to take from the last game, nothing to build on. he cant fix the problem if he cant even see the problem.

if next game is like last game its not a rebuilding year, its a starting from scratch year. at this rate maybe we should be hoping for a strike so maybe the replacements can get a win.

Gashed? We took a gashing that totaled a whooping 41 yards. I'll give David Johnson 41 yards in total of 'gashes' if that means that is all he gets on Sunday. Some people are ignorant as hell.

Not me, I cherished every second of their pain. Boy I really hated their Head Coach Bruce and his stupid hats.

But I guess we better watch the Jets game to see if the first guy is right. Seems kinda stupid to play your rookie QB on defense.... but it IS the Yets.

Cardinals vs. Rams picks, predictions

CBS Sports: Rams 23, Cardinals 10

Ryan Wilson writes: "The Rams needed 30 minutes to get going in Oakland but once they did the Raiders didn't have a chance. It didn't hurt that the Raiders had 155 yards in penalties but the bigger problem was that they barely touched Jared Goff.

The Cardinals couldn't stop Alex Smith, Adrian Peterson and Jordan Reed last week at home, which makes us think they'll need a miracle against Goff, Gurley, Cooks, Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods."

Sporting News: Rams 32, Cardinals 14

David Steele writes: "Opening night against the Raiders served as a reminder that the Rams’ loaded, high-priced defense will be under 24/7 scrutiny, even more than Jared Goff and Sean McVay will be. Opponents will test them, of course. Not many will succeed. Arizona won't; it couldn't move the chains at home against Washington. The first two games are going to come off like easy touches for the Rams."

nola.com: Rams cruise against Cardinals

Jim Derry writes: "When the beginning of each season rolls around, I do my best to try and not put too much emphasis on Week 1. But how can you not when it comes to these two teams. The Rams in the second half Monday night looked like the Super Bowl contender many think they are, while the Cardinals looked Sunday like a team in the running for the first pick in next year's draft. This seems like as close to a lock as one ever will get in the NFL."

CBS Sports: Rams (-13) over Cardinals

Will Brinson writes: "HOO BOY. Only took one week and we've got our first nearly two-touchdown spread. You can't ever feel good about taking a team laying 13 points, but I think I can comfortably do it with the Rams here for two reasons.

One, the Cardinals are terrible. And two, the Rams do a really good job of finishing teams off. They'll be more comfortable at home and the offense/defense are both so explosive I can see them easily tacking on one or two fourth-quarter scores to cover. Man it's not fun taking that number though."

Sporting News: Rams 38, Cardinals 17

Vinnie Iyer writes: "The Cardinals' defense is adjusting to a new scheme with players in different positions. Their offense is adjusting to a more conservative approach and questionable play from Sam Bradford. The Rams have no questions about either side of the ball. The LA express will go on."

Bleacher Report: Rams 34, Cardinals 14

SB Nation: 8 of 9 experts pick the Rams (only a coin clip picked the Cardinals)

CBS Sports: Rams 38, Cardinals 20

Bleacher Report: Rams 28, Cardinals 14

Athlon Sports: All 3 experts pick the Rams

I wouldn't be surprised if they're shut out. Watching that game last week reminded me of pre-Whisenhunt Cardinals. Ineptitude almost everywhere. A QB playing to not get injured. An offensive game plan that seemed to never consider that they need to adjust if they got into a deep hole, which due to a defense that stayed home that day (mentally) happened fairly early.

There's so much to fix that I don't see much more than a 4-12 season. Wilks seems to know what to say, but falls short in knowing what to do. The look on his face betrayed that throughout the game as it spun further out of control.

Even though I wouldn't be surprised if they were shut out, I'll fall in at 38-3 Rams on Sunday. Wilks will be feeling the pressure after this one. Fans being fans they're going to be calling for his head with even more volume after this next debacle-in-waiting.

What they ought to be saying and wondering is will Bradford play the whole game because Donald, Suh, and Brockers will be on the QB hunt!!!

Bradford is always known as "Mr. Dink and dunk", yet when he plays enough games he always has one, if not the best deep ball completion percentages in the league. So maybe its not Bradford, its your system.

Hey, that guy has a good point. He's paying attention to the Coliseum struggles.
Rams have to turn that shit around this year. Starting NOW, this Sunday. Create a home field advantage.

advantage
noun ad·van·tage
1: superiority of position or condition
  • Higher ground gave the enemy the advantage.

The only way the Cardinals can win is to hold the ball, move the chains, score points on all those drives and play a dominant defensive game forcing multiple turnovers. I just don't see it.

As i said in preseason they have two offensive go-to weapons and nothing else. The QB can't hold the ball for long or make things happen with his legs when the pocket breaks down either. There just isn't a whole lot to defend.

I expect a better defensive effort from them than they showed vs Washington. Better tackling, more emphasis in stopping the run etc...but i think they'll have to blitz a TON to get to Goff, and when they do they'll get screened to death for chunk yardage.
