This thread should be hilarious. What a down-trodden, sad-sack fanbase. Oh how the mighty have fallen and so quickly. Just think, a couple of years back, with Jim Harbaugh at the helm, they were in the Super Bowl. "One day the DNA rifle-of-the-walk, the next day a feather duster." - Tina Turner in

49ers-Rams spread: San Francisco underdogs in every game this season
By David Fucillo@davidfucillo

The San Francisco 49ers face the St. Louis Rams this coming weekend to close out their 2015 NFL schedule. The 49ers opened as a 3.5-point underdog, and the line is ranging between that and a field goal, depending on the sportsbook you use.

If this line holds, the 49ers will have been underdogs in every single game this season. They opened the season as a field goal underdog to the Minnesota Vikings (a win that looks more and more bizarre with each passing week). They then traveled to Pittsburgh and Arizona. They returned home from two beatings to face a then unbeaten Green Bay Packers team.

They did get wins over the Baltimore Ravens and Atlanta Falcons, but both games were followed by matchups with the Seattle Seahawks, so they were not going to be favored in either of those games. They followed up their win over Chicago with a road game in Cleveland, and were underdogs in that one.

The 49ers closest lines through 15 games have been 2.5-points at home against Baltimore and on the road against Cleveland. They have only been a double digit underdog once, at +14 in Seattle. They were +9.5 when they hosted the Atlanta Falcons, +8.5 in Detroit, +7.5 four times (vs. GB, @ NYG, @ STL, vs. AZ), and +7 twice (@ AZ, vs. CIN).

Had the Rams gotten beaten handily by the Seahawks, the line would have been close, but instead, it is all but assured of heading into the game with the Rams favored. From a historical perspective, it is kind of fascinating. The 49ers have been favored in at least one game each season, dating back to at least 2005. In that season, they were favorites against the Houston Texans in the final game of the regular season.
---------
we need three years of constant underdogging
and a banner-towing plane to fall on the head of a certain guy. that would truly rebuild the organization.
--------
I imagine this is going to be a hideous game
The league’s two worst offenses at the venue where the Niners’ defense plays pretty well. Not sure both teams can combine for 30+ points.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Tomsula pulls out the kitchen sink on Sunday and runs fake punts and all kinds of David strategies to pull out one last win and save his job.
--------
please no
literally the worst thing that could happen is the 9ers coming out with reckless abandon and actually winning this game. York and the CS would feel so validated and they would be certain that things were finally turning around. It would be the Chicago game all over again but without the drubbing by Cleveland to set everyone straight.
---------
it might be telling him ...
… we’ve outperformed expectations by winning four games we weren’t suppose to.

200.gif

---------
So, Vegas thinks this team is actually worse than Nolan's first season as Head Coach
which was 2005? After the Rams beat Seattle yesterday, you can’t really argue with that line. Fisher is doing everything he can to keep his job, which may well happen if they beat us handily next Sunday. He pulled this trick off for quite a few years in Houston and Tennessee before they finally had enough.
---------
We got to lose this game bad
I don’t want a feel good moral victory like the end of the 2010 season to possibly help keep Tomsula around another year. This has to be an embarrassing loss.
---------
if it's embarrassing you want
then tomsula’s your guy!

0ap2000000130856_video_cp.jpg

----------
Gabbert under pressure
At first, it looked like Gabbert was much more poised than Kap under pressure and possessed good escapability. Since then, he’s taken so many bad sacks that I have to say they’re both liabilities when the pressure comes. Rams can definitely bring the pass-rush and I expect that to be enough to embarrass us.
---------
Yeah, there DL is pretty dang nasty
Not sure if Gabbert will survive this.
--------
Gabbert
Correct me if I’m wrong, but this is what I’ve noticed. Gabbert’s first start looked like a QB that was resurrected from the dead. He showed some really good things and didn’t look anything like the QB in Jacksonville. He looked like a guy playing with nothing to lose.

He now looks timid and like a guy playing to keep his job. I’m not sure why the change since there is literally no one behind him or looking over his shoulder, but he looks like he’s playing so tight and doesn’t want to make mistakes, so he can keep the starting role next season, that he looks sub par. Don’t get me wrong, the o-line play is bad and the play calling is worse, but he just looks like he’s playing a different style of football compared to his first start this season.
--------
Perhaps it's the mental aspect
And he’s starting to regress back to his Jacksonville self. It happens when a QB takes too many hits, they start fearing the next one, thus tighten up and suck
--------
Playing not to make mistakes
That attitude is passed down by the coaching staff.
-------
The best QBs behind this line and with this CS will have PTSD after a few games
Good examples of what a pass rush (or lack or o-line, or both) can do to a team’s game plan can be found in how Aaron Rodgers and the Packers got manhandled yesterday. Same with Cam Newton and the Panthers. Or Brady and the Patriots. All 3 looked like HS teams at times when the pass rush destroyed their mighty throwing offenses.

It’s no wonder the 49ers are 4-11 now. If the Rams defense shows up next Sunday I could see this game having a baseball score of something like 9-3. I’m secretly hoping for a shutout of the 49ers so they can win the "lowest scoring offense ever" award.

Whatever it takes to get the CEO, GM, and CS out of here…
--------
49-0
would be ironically perfect.
--------
Beat up on Wilson
The Rams D beat up on Wilson more than any team I have seen this year. I cringe when I think about what they are going to do to our guy.
---------
I am just going to say what everyone is thinking
Out of all the 32 teams in the NFL.

Our 49ers team is the worst of all. We are the last placed team in the NFL. The Browns have proven this to be true. And we will stay at the bottom for a long time sadly.
--------
Will it be a new record, if 9ers lose again to Rams, making 0-6 in division?
--------
Well at least we are not alone in the NFC west
The Cardinals are the best team in the NFC west now and Seattle should be returning to how bad they were before. All the Rams need is a good Head Coach and they will surpass Seattle too.
-------
Not sure you can count seattle out
They are going to be in cap hell, but if they are able to restock through the draft, they could be a good team for years to come. They already have a franchise QB in place that they can’t build around, whereas St Louis does not.

Since franchise QB’s don’t grow on trees, St Louis could be waiting a long time before they get one, and by that time there is no guarantee the current players will be around by then. I see AZ dropping off a bit once Plamer is retired. He’ll be lucky to play another 1-2 years. Arrians will keep them competitive, but I just don’t see anyone being a juggernaut in the NFC west after the 2016 season.
--------
Yep all the Rams need is a QB and head coach
I will take Bruce Arians over Pete Carroll. All they need is a QB.
---------
I would definitely take ARians over Carroll any day
Although Carroll has done a nice job in his stint with Seattle, I don’t think his Rah Rah, high intensity style is a good fit long term in the NFL. It’s great for 18 year old to 22 year old college kids, but I think it will wear thin with the NFL players, kind of like Harbaugh, and eventually the FO will need to make a change.

Arians is no nonsense and expects guys to be pros and do their job, which is a style that lasts a bit longer in the NFL, and I think more players respect it because they feel like they are being treated like men, not college kids. I played for both types, and I can definitely say I enjoyed the coach that was no nonsense, no cheerleader, expects each person on the team to come to work do their job.
--------
This will be a 2-0 game in O/T
I can almost see how this game will play out… Neither team is an offensive powerhouse, so the game ends 0-0 in regulation. In overtime, we win the coin toss, take the kick off in the endzone for a touchback, then Tomsula attempts to challenge the spot at the 20 yard line but is told he can’t. Gabbert gets sacked 3 times for a loss of 21 yards and a Rams safety. End of game.

Combined stats for both teams:
12 first downs,
20 punts
200 yards passing
8 turnovers
9 dropped passes (all by Vance McDonald)
15 sacks (all against Pears)
38 penalties (new NFL record)
45 missed tackles
---------
LOL, good post
I think the 49ers defense will once again show up at home, so Rams will likely not score much on offense. They will however turn this game into a farce when they decimate the 49ers offense and score at least 14 off them with pick sixes and backfield fumble recovery TD returns. I hold no hope we’ll win this game, but am still interested in how it’ll be lost.

Go Rams??
Yes. A Ram win increases the odds of Tomsula getting fired.
No. Win at all cost, even if it means keeping Tomsula

I'm all in for cheering the Rams on. Going 0-6 in the division makes Tomsula look really bad. I'm also hoping for a plethora of dumb penalties and miss tackles. I just hope our players don't get hurt. We all know how dirty Fisher can be.

Plus a loss makes Jed's end of the year press conference all the more interesting. I know that little winnie is hoping for a niner win, not because he loves this team, but because it will make keeping Tomsula easier and his life a little easier too. Two things I don't want. I wish we were 0-16 to make Tomsula's demise a done deal.
----------
Hell yes GO RAMS!!!!
---------
Top 5 pick? Check please.
---------
Its a no lose scenario, I'm pleased when my Niners win, but if they lose this season, and Tomsula gets fired, great! If we drop to the 4 spot in draft, cool, so win or lose we win!
---------
Rams will throw the game so that Niners keep Tomsula
---------
Niners will win this game and get bumped out of the top 10 draft.
---------
Guys, stop it . Tomfoola is not going to be HC shortly after the season is over. I am hoping right after the whistle blows in the rams game.
--------
Tomsula stays, guys. We need to collectively move on to the next stage of grief which is acceptance... or flying banners of the stadium during Super Bowl week and the last game.

Draft position is all that hinges on this game.

But we can't let Herman Edwards down. So we have to win.
---------
f**k Jed. I hope the Rams cream us 55-0 and I hope the stadium is empty or full or Rams fans.
---------
I can see it now...

Niners kick a late FG to win the game 13-16 and Tomsula gets a gatorade bath. Jed makes an announcement in the locker room that tomsula is returning and the team cheers.
sick.gif

----------
Half the team would retire immediately
---------
Tomsula is undefeated when coaching the last game of the season.
--------
I don't see Fisher getting out coached by Tomsula. I bet you Fisher will run a bunch of trick plays, and leave Tomsula dumbfounded, with that patented "WTF just happens look".

My hatred for Jed, and what he did to this team, is so great that I'm willing to cheer for the Rams. Harbaugh was willing to work things out and stay... Ugh, I f**king hate you Jed.

Harbs would have us at 8-8 at least. Kaepernick would've been benched much sonner. And he would be grooming Gabbert into a starter (Alex Smith type of QB) role for 2016. Or maybe Kaep would be playing like he did in 2013. Fangio would still be here too. And we would've had a new OC.
sad.gif

---------
I'm a fan. I want the 49ers to win. But it won't matter what I think because the Rams will win 31-2
--------
To be honest it's hard to cheer against Todd Gurley & Aaron Donald
--------
GO RAMS. f**k TOMSULA
--------
Yet high draft picks don't automatically lead to success. Just ask Oakland, st. Louis, Cleveland and Jacksonville.
---------
No way we win this one, rams are a better team.... tomsula gonna get canned regardless
--------
As a diehard 49ers fan of llke 4 weeks i will cheer my beloved team to the end
---------
I hate Greg Williams. I hope one of our guys goes flying into their sideline and spears that dirty f**k and "kills his head"
---------
LOL I agree!

My only criticism of this is that the Whiners are in a Top 10 position to draft a talented QB.

I'm in the fence. On the one hand, Gabbert is an old MU guy who got us the win, finally, against OU under Pinkel.

In the other, his pocket precense and happy feet are so laughably bad, we stand a strong chance of setting a single game sack record even without Quinn in the lineup.

And I'd relish seeing that like no other. Gabbert may not last the game.

When the schedule came out after half the Niners and Harbaugh were gone the fans were debating if they would have 12 wins or even more. I was like, are you really that delusional?

Yes, yes they were.

No doubt. They will get their QB of the future in this draft. Rams will probably draft DT.

They haven't drafted a QB of the future since Montana. ASmith and Keapernick are the best they have drafted since then.

I hope they trade for Griffin and have a few more years of shit seasons. I love that idea.

Man. They sure are depressed.

I agree with a lot of them though. That team needs a massive rebuild in not only personal but staff as well. Of course that doesn't change the douche owner one bit, but you gotta take what you can get.

Mike Holmgren reportedly expresses interest in 49ers' head coaching job ... again
By James Brady@JamesBradySBN

Holmgren really, really likes the 49ers.

With one game to go in the regular season and the San Francisco 49ers sporting a losing record, it's about time for some tasty head coaching rumors. First up, it sounds like former Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers head coach Mike Holmgren has expressed interest in the 49ers' head coaching job, according to Robert Klemko of the Monday Morning Quarterback.

Holmgren hasn't exactly been shy about his interest in the 49ers in the past, of course. He's publicly stated his interest in the past and it's no surprise that he's interested again this year, if Klemko's report is accurate.

Holmgren was the 49ers' quarterback coach in the late 80's before he transitioned to offensive coordinator. He left not long after, for the Packers, where he coached them through 1998. Then he joined the Seahawks, as I'm sure you all know, through 2008. A short stint with the Cleveland Browns put a bow on his career, or maybe not.

With the Packers in 1996, Holmgren won Super Bowl XXXI and he's still pretty well-respected around the league, even after struggles with the Seahawks late in his career and the disaster that was his tenure as team president of the Cleveland Browns.

Personally, I don't know how I feel about Holmgren. What I do know is that I doubt Jim Tomsula is going to be fired any time this year. I think Tomsula gets another season, while a coordinator or two gets the boot. The one thing that would give Tomsula a pink slip is if the 49ers are extremely confident in an available candidate and their ability to land him.

Whether or not Holmgren is or can be that guy is totally up in the air.
---------
67. Same age as Tom Coughlin and 5 years older than both Pete Carroll and Bill Belichick.
--------
NFL coaches ages
Tom Coughlin, New York Giants 69 Aug. 31, 1946
Pete Carroll, Seattle 64 Sept. 15, 1951
Bill Belichick, New England 63 April 16, 1952
Bruce Arians, Arizona 63 Oct. 3, 1952
Jim Caldwell, Detroit 60 Jan. 16, 1955
John Fox, Chicago 60 Feb. 9, 1955
Mike Zimmer, Minnesota 59 June 5, 1956
--------
Um, that's funny because all the quarterbacks who worked for him remember a guy who predicted exactly what a defense would do in meetings
and exploited it perfectly with his calls. Andy Reid would remember him. Steve Marriucci would remember him. Matt Hasselbeck would remember him. Brett Favre would remember him. Steve Young would remember him. Joe Montana would remember him.

In San Francisco he was an outstanding offensive play-caller. In Green Bay he was an outstanding play-caller. Even in Seattle he was an outstanding play-caller. He spawned so many coaches his own tree rivals any in league history. His system is proven, and he has connections all over the place.

Compared to Tomstupa, he’s giant among men.
--------
Say what you will about him, but Holmgren has won everywhere he’s coached. Every team he’s coached as a head coach has made it to the Super Bowl. Every where he’s coached he’s been able to bring up a franchise QB (Young, Favre, Hasselbeck).

And, frankly, given how York has done this team and the coaching staff over, Holmgren is our best case scenario. No one with any other options would elect to come here. See Josh McDaniels and Rob Chudzinski refusing to even interview for the HC job last offseason. Yeah, they’d rather stay as a coordinator or whatever the heck Chud was than be head coach of the 49ers.

And do you think that’s gotten any better? What kind of coordinator or assistant coach is going to want to work under Tomsula? Even Tarver wants out. We have more guys wanting out (1) than we have wanting in (-1).

So…

Yeah, I’ll keep on hoping we replace the worst coaching staff in Niners history with an at-least mostly competent one. You can keep on dreaming that we can have more jazzy debates about tempo, offsides penalties, and the eliteness of Blaine Gabbert.
-------
Even as a GM in Seattle HE built the roster that went to the 2005 Super Bowl
He was right all along in his draft picks and signings.
---------
Not to mention many fans here periodically scoff at the idea of bringing any former 49er "retreads" as they call them...
back to the 49ers any time the conversation comes up as was the case with the Shanahan, Holmgren talk prior to JT getting hired. They claim to prefer "bright young minds" like the meat head Gase who’s team is currently 6-9, in last place in the division, 24th in power ranking, 22nd in points scored and lost to the pathetic 49ers in Chicago.

Not so good without his boy Manning yet they’d take a guy like that over a proven SB champion because "he’s too old and doesn’t understand the modern NFL." I’m going to dream about Holmgren being named 49ers HC because it’s all I have at this point in the season.
---------
What are you guys talking about ?!
Considering replacing one of the brightest minds in the game today!? No way we can replace tomsula with a Super Bowl winning coach. We have in our laps the future of our franchise. An articulate, bright, offensive minded, motivator who can take us to the next level, OK? We jus can’t do it, OK? We’d be remiss by lettng him go. We would all regret it, and be back on here clamoring for his return.

Obviously a joke to anyone with a sense of reality ( Jed & Trent would not be privy to that group )
We are forced to put our collective hope into an owner who FIRED a stud coach and staff and replaced them with a caveman who can’t even verbalize a rationale thought. I’m shocked we even got to 4 wins.
--------
I take him in a wheelchair over this head coach
-------
I’d take the wheelchair over this Head Coach
--------
Oh please let him coach this team
The 49ers need some creditable coaches to make the team look good again. Nobody around the NFL respects our team because of Jed York. We need respectable people like him to come here and change our image. Jed York’s public figure has tainted the 49ers.
----------
Thing is Holmgren might be the only person willing to take the job
I doubt there is many people that would want to work for the Yorks. At least Holmgren is respected as a head coach around the NFL.
--------
I like Holmgren as HC
People will go but but the Browns…I said HC not President and he’s had great success as a Head Coach for both teams he coached (Packers, Seahawks). Both those teams went from being bad teams to going to the Super Bowl. After all he’s been to the Super bowl 3 times (yeah only won 1 but still pretty damn good).

He is a former QB coach and offensive coordinator for the 49ers so works well with QBs…that’s always a plus. I like Holmgren and he obviously wants to be the 49ers coach, just give him the damn job. Also…it would make the 49ers vs Seahawks rivalry even more interesting with him of course being the former Seahawks coach before Pete.
--------
Absolutely concur
Holmgren is far and away the best we could do right now; no other even halfway competent coach with connections in the NFL would want to be a part of the 49ers after they’ve proven themselves this year to be the lovechild of a clown show and a dumpster fire. If Jed has half a brain he will show up on Holmgren’s doorstep with a contract and two dozen roses.

Which means of course that Jed will ignore Holmgren and we’ll keep Tomsula for another two years or so and squander whatever talent we’re able to pick up through free agency and perennial early draft picks. I’m so excited.
--------
He only coached up three hall of fame qbs and Matt hasselback. Took two different teams to the super bowl. BRINGTHISGUYTHE @$!# IN. He can at least coach up Gabbert in the west coast offense and the quarterback we draft.

They also have another issue that the Rams have. Poor offensive line. Difference being their's is comprised of mostly veterans like Erik Pears and Jordan Devey who have proven to be some of the worst line men in the league, along with underachieving young players like Marcus Martin and Brandon Thomas (though injuries also play in that, they have to be recovered by now and still aren't challenging poor competition.) The difference is I would say the Rams line has shown much more promise.
