Jared Goff, Todd Gurley among Rams who won’t play vs. 49ers
The Rams will rest key players on Sunday

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay confirmed on Wednesday that some big-name players won’t play against the San Francisco 49ers. Those players include quarterback Jared Goff, running back Todd Gurley, defensive tackle Aaron Donald and offensive linemen Andrew Whitworth and John Sullivan, according to Rich Hammond of the Southern California News Group.

This is good news for the 49ers given they want a win, but it’s going to be diminished without the best players on Los Angeles’ roster in action. I’m a big believer in wins mattering more than a couple draft spots, so I would never want the 49ers to tank, but a win over the Rams without Gurley, Donald and Goff would sure feel hollow.

At this point, though, it’s all about continuing to evaluate the young players. Kyle Shanahan needs as much time as he can get with his guys before a long offseason of what will hopefully be improvement.

I think Donald is the one that helps the 49ers the most, at least when it comes to keeping everyone healthy. Donald has a legitimate claim to being considered the best defensive player in the entire NFL. Not having to worry about him chasing down and destroying Jimmy Garoppolo is a relief.

Sean Mannion should get the start at quarterback with Goff out. Hopefully, the 49ers can make it a tough day for him.

won't even be a fair fight...

----------

Watch Sean Mannion blows you guys out
---------
Against our corners.. you could say Sean Parker and it wouldn't surprise me.
But against Jimmy, your defense, especially without the best pass rusher in the league, really has no chance against Jimmy G
------
Sean Mannion will rue the day
his coach sent him out without the best players on his OL.

He had better tighten up his cleats and put on some extra padding.

Who’s the Rams 3rd string QB? Tell him to start warming up.
--------
He's having his hand held by McVay presnap every play.
The league will figure it out and make Goff make his own reads. It’ll be funny to watch. Kinda like Goff trying to figure out where the sun rises and sets.
---------
Have you heard him speak?
Or did you watch Hard Knocks? He doesn’t seem that bright.
------
I got nothing against the rams
Even as bitter rivals have mostly respected the fans and team.
Its Seattle i cant stand.
---------
I think being in LA County has renewed my hatred for the Rams.
It’s just like the new arrogant and ignorant Seahawks fans that came out of nowhere all over again.
---------
Probably best for the moral of the Rams.
First they want to drop a seed to play the Carson Wentzless Eagles, and second since we’d obviously beat them they don’t go into the playoffs with the sigmata of "you got beat by the 49ers" and then lose all momentum.
---------
Niners Win 45-3
----------
Jimmy G has been firing missiles at the tank the past month or so...
basically destroying it. Definitely not going to be as meaningful as the Jaguars win but not much you can do. This is Jimmy G’s last chance to prove himself he is worth even more money (and he has already earned himself $25 to 30 million per year no doubt). Jimmy G is the talk of the town and more free agents want to come and play in this exciting offense.
---------
Let’s go blow them out. Fifty Burger!!
---------
I'm gonna laugh when they lose to Carolina in the wild card round, because they were angling for Philly in the divisional round.
Or if they have to go to NO in the NFCC.

Super weird decision by McVay.
---------
100% all in. Fifty burger. Pedal to the metal. This is our playoffs. This is it. Finish strong!
---------
I think that's a chickenshit approach.
I’m with best coach in NFL history on this one:

"I think that’s a conversation that you can have, and the fans can have, but it’s not really part of our approach to the game," Belichick told Boston.com. "I don’t think it’s a good one to have. I don’t really understand it either. You’re going to pick out one guy that is important and say somebody else isn’t? I don’t think that’s a good way to manage your football team."

You want to rest your starters and pull them before the game is over, that’s fine, but not even dressing them seems excessively cowardly and a poor message to send to the guys deemed not worthy to get the week off and worth risking injury to.
----------
I think the rams are having a great year
But to me the rams are like last year’s cowboys team. Healthy, the running game is killing it, good play from the trenches and QB play that won’t lose you games. Some injuries but nothing major…

I see regression next year, especially once teams figure out how to stop those short passes and YACs for Gurley.
-----------
Goff will still need to play...
Since the 49ers will beat the hell out of Sean, forcing the Ryan Gosling look alike to play.

Funny Rams will be figured out next year, but the 49ers after a four game winning streak will be a team on the rise and nobody will figure out Jimmy GQ? That's okay I expect nothing less.

This guy wants arrogance and ignorance all he has to do is look at his fellow posters.

This guy has never visited ROD.

Niners Win 45-3
This guys mother is about to walk into his room and give him his meds, because he's clearly overdue.

This guy doesn't watch football.

So the D's are now going to find a way to stop screen passes because the Rams use them. But nobody bothered trying to stop screen passes the past 50+ yrs.

But nobody will ever find a way to stop Jimmy Grabmypole, because he is the greatest QB in the history of the NFL. Sounds like the shecock fans have already found a new team, now that seattle is no longer a playoff contender

We would literally humiliate them if we played our starters. Another 34-0 halftime game like at Seattle.

But resting starters is the right move:

1 Go into playoffs with no major injuries
2 Fresh legs vs Carolina
3 Draw Philly round 2
4 Let Jimmy’s price tag go up and suck Niners cap over 20 million while Goff is at six million
5 Niners draft lower each round
6 Ficken more long FG attempts as we won’t be scoring Td’s every possession.
7 More experience for backups
8 More time to scout Carolina and Atlanta, less time on a meaningless Niners game
9 more sleep
10 more time to sit around in underwear
watching Rams 2017 highlights and NFL network talk about the Rams.

That would devastate those over zealous idiot whiner fans. I’d love reading how their hearts are broken!

https://www.si.com/nfl/2017/12/28/nfl-coaches-black-monday-firings-hirings

LESSON OF THE WEEK

Are you smitten with Jimmy Garoppolo too?

Understandable. Right now, it’s hard not to be. He’s somehow made a 5-10 team one of the NFL’s most watchable, and provided light at the end of the tunnel on what looked to be a long rebuilding project in San Francisco. Garoppolo has completed 69 percent of his passes for 1,268 yards, five touchdowns, three picks and a 98.9 passer rating as a Niner. He’s 4-0 as a starter there, and 6-0 as a starter for his four-year career.

So when I was talking to San Francisco GM John Lynch, still flying high after the win over Jacksonville, we eventually got to how all of this came together. I’ve already told the story in this space about how Kyle Shanahan’s presentation to his scouts in February was loaded with Garoppolo cutups, and how that was a precursor to inquiries that were swiftly shot down by the Patriots in the spring.

And that was how we got to something really interesting on how the Niners’ belief that was strengthened Garoppolo could be the guy. It was a lesson, in fact, other teams could apply: They took into account how much the team he was on seemed to value him, and the track record of that team, and figured that should count for something.

“I’m not patting myself on the back, because I think a lot of people saw it,” Lynch said. “Other people tried vigorously to trade for the guy, because we all know at that position, when you think you have someone special, you do what you can to try to get them. The story’s been well-chronicled that I was rebuffed rather quickly, and that taught me a lot.

“You respect so much the way the Patriots do things, the fact they weren’t willing to let him go said something. And ultimately, I won’t speak for them, but I think it’d had run its course there. I just felt really good about it and that’s why we were so quick to pull the trigger when it presented itself.”

This wasn’t all just tea-leaf-reading from Lynch. In fact, at one point, during the brief talks that led to the trade consummation, Belichick flat out told the Niners’ rookie GM exactly how he felt about Garoppolo. And remember, the Patriots coach usually isn’t the sentimental type.

“Bill, beyond thinking this kid was a special football player, thought he was a special person,” Lynch said. “And he just said, ‘You’re gonna love the player, guys respond to him.’ I didn’t know what that meant. You think you know, but (we saw) that right away, even when he wasn’t playing. And mind you, C.J. Beathard’s a very popular player on this team, and we were liking the direction we were going. ...

“[Jimmy] just had command, he became a leader instantly. … And you kept hearing that from people at New England—the guys love him. You don’t really know what that means until you see it, and right away we saw it.”

The season will be over soon, and things will get a little complicated from there. Garoppolo has probably played his way from getting the non-exclusive franchise tag (expected to be around $23.5 million) to the exclusive tag (which now sits at $25.35 million and could rise before its final calculation in April) from the Niners, raising his leverage point and positioning him to be among the top paid guys in the NFL.

For now, we can just call that a good problem to have. And give Lynch credit for sniffing some of this stuff in becoming sold on his 26-year-old gunslinger. Sometimes, for all these evaluators, that can be about knowing what to look for, and knowing that the whole story isn’t on tape.

NFL Week 17 Preview: 49ers at Rams
BY PFF ANALYSIS TEAM

SF-49ers-Header.png

PFFELO Ranking: 24

Coverage by: David Neumann

MATCHUP: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS OFFENSE VS. LOS ANGELES RAMS DEFENSE

QB Jimmy Garoppolo on deep passes — Jimmy G has carved up opposing defenses up in the short and intermediate areas since taking over as San Francisco’s starting quarterback. On passes traveling 19 yards or less in the air since Week 13, Garoppolo has completed 74.8 percent of his passes (fourth) and averaged 8.9 yards per attempt (first). Perhaps the one thing we have yet to see Garoppolo do over the past four games, however, is to connect on deep throws.

When targeting players 20 yards or more downfield, only three of 14 attempts have found their intended target, with two of those completions coming against busted coverages that left players wide open downfield. San Francisco did find some success on deep passes against this Rams defense back in Week 3, completing two of three attempts for 109 yards.

WR Marquise Goodwin vs. CB Trumaine Johnson Goodwin has been one of the primary beneficiaries of Garoppolo’s ascendance over the past month. Pre-Garoppolo, the speedy wideout was used almost exclusively as a deep threat and averaged 1.65 yards per route run, ranking 35th out of 89 qualifying receivers. Goodwin’s game has seemingly evolved with Garoppolo at the helm and he’s up a full yard per route, averaging 2.66 yards per route run over the past four games, the sixth-best figure during that span.

Johnson, who should be lining up across from Goodwin for much of this game, has also been playing well of late. During the past three games, Johnson has allowed a lowly 43.8 percent catch rate into his coverage (14th of 128 defenders with at least 10 targets during that span) while breaking up four passes and keeping receivers out of the end zone.

49ers interior linemen vs. DI Aaron Donald Aaron Donald, destroyer of worlds, enters the season finale with 91 total quarterback pressures, 25 more than any other interior defender. If he can manage nine pressures this week — a total he’s reached in five games this season —

Donald would become just the second defender in the PFF-era to record 100 pressures in a season, joining J.J. Watt, who had 119 in 2014. Donald will attempt to do so against a 49ers interior offensive line that has allowed 96 pressures this season, tied for the seventh-most.

PFFELO Ranking: 6

Coverage by: Mike Cahill

MATCHUP: LOS ANGELES RAMS OFFENSE VS. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS DEFENSE

T Darrell Williams vs. Edge Cassius Marsh Williams has not seen much action in the regular season with veteran left tackle Andrew Whitworth in town. He has allowed a single sack in his 10 pass-blocking snaps this season for a pass-blocking efficiency of 90.0. His preseason play gave a lot of optimism for the future, where he ranked second in pass-blocking efficiency (98.5) among tackles with at least 64 pass-blocking snaps.

His two pressures allowed were by far the lowest amount by any tackle with at least 100 pass-blocking snaps, with the next lowest total being five pressures allowed. His opponent, edge defender Cassius Marsh, has generated eight of his 12 quarterback pressures from the right side over the last three weeks, tied for 16th-most among edge defenders.

LAR177-1024x576.png

WR Josh Reynolds vs. CB Ahkello Witherspoon When quarterback Sean Mannion was throwing to Josh Reynolds in the preseason, he targeted him four times on passes of 20 or more yards. Reynolds caught two of those passes for 58 yards and two touchdowns. Since the preseason, he has seen only one such target of 20 or more yards and he did not catch it. Of his other 16 targets, he has caught nine of them for 88 yards, one touchdown, and has generated a wide receiver rating of 87.4, 11th-highest among rookie wide receivers.

With Jared Goff most likely resting in the season finale, Reynolds will have his deep shots against rookie cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon. It should be noted, however, that Witherspoon hasn’t given up a single touchdown since Week 12 and is currently allowing a passer rating of 66.4 since Week 13. Both Reynolds and Witherspoon were ranked in the top-15 among their respective positions in PFF’s 2017 draft guide.

RB Malcolm Brown vs. San Francisco run defense – Brown has been limited to 72 carries between the preseason and regular season in 2017, but has been able force tacklers to miss 12 tackles in the run game and four more in the passing game, while averaging 2.36 yards after contact per attempt. The only three games he has seen double-digit carries came with the Rams having games in hand, but he did average 4.2 yards per carry in such games and forced three of his six missed tackles.

Meanwhile, the 49ers defense is tied for sixth-fewest missed tackles over the last five games with 29 combined. On top of that, they have inside linebacker Reuben Foster, who is in his rookie season but owns the third-highest run-defense grade (92.3) among all inside linebackers and has the second-most run stops (21) since Week 9.

McVay got the Rams to where they are, and ya gotta agree that Whit, and Sullivan need a break, the others with the exception of Kupp(knee) could play, but with OL resting no sense playing them IMO. also Woods who has been our #1 guy could use the rest for his shoulder

Maybe the 49ers take it easy on the Rams
and rest a few starters. a few more than the Rams do. To keep the game competitive and allow the Rams to feel the full psychological impact of getting Jimmy G’d.

Or maybe the RAMS will put a huge impact on Jimmy G and he’ll end up getting Kenny G’d
