Hate to see this.
It doesn't bother me at all this is happening to the Whiners. That said, I hate to see a very talented young guy leave the game.
But, as part of his reasons he said "his experiences"....who knows how many concussions the guy had coming up in football. It was a concern. A 24 year old person should not have to consider long term debilitating injury. I am glad he made the right decision for himself.

Same. I hear and read some pretty cavalier things from folks around the net not in a position to really understand the stakes.

Brain injuries are no joke. I've had a lesion since '92 with all the complications that have come with it. I don't begrudge anyone not signing up for what I deal with...

Got mine from concussions and anti-malaria drug (which apparently since the pill doesn't "physically cause the damage", the VA won't cover it")

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/some-us-troops-haunted-by-anti-malaria-drugs-side-effects/

the side effects are no joke - I can't go to any bars that have strobe lights or the super LED lights...causes anything from migraines to dizziness...remember fainting once at a bar with my buddy while on my 2nd drink, got hit in the face with a strobe light from across the bar in another room, and my buddy had to catch me. Bouncers thought I was drunk at first until my buddy explained what was happening.

Memory is also another area I struggle with - not to mention the mood swings....just glad I don't get impending doom or hallucinations like I did when I was actually taking that medicine. Wouldn't wish that on anyone, not even a dirty niner/seahawk player lol

The sad part is the game is losing a talented player and in the case or the Niners two. Good for them, but I hope the league finds a way to make the game a little safer. Wish I had an answer but it's a violent game superior athletes

Navy doc over-medicated me and I had a Grand Mal seizure that left a lesion in my brain. Left me basically bed-ridden for two years and at one point I had as many as 50 or more absence seizures a day. Those are under control, but I've had daily migraines since about Oct, 2000.

Was offered hospice at one point.

I do it opiate free (family history of addiction).

Brain injury is no joke and I KNOW that most football players even still don't know the FULL risk that playing entails. I know because players are still learning (and some are shocked when they find what they find) and a person can't know the full risk without full information.

I only played through high school, but I know brain injuries aren't a joke. After suffering a concussion my JR year and a position change to (starting) FB, I was absolutely petrified of going helmet to helmet with a LB. However, I thankfully was able to not suffer another one that year. Unfortunately, my teammate who was also a senior suffered his 4th or 5th one, which resulted in him not playing the rest of the year or ever again.

I feel bad for the young man, but you have to respect his decision. Another loss for the 49ers to add to pros: Gore, Willis, Smith...

And then there's their new title as the NFL team leader in arrests:

Aldon Smith (3)
Ray McDonald (2)
Bruce Miller
Chris Culliver
Daniel Kilgore
Demarcus Dobbs
Al Netter

There's a very simple solution. do away with the helmets. Nobody will lead in with their heads if they don't have a helmet on. Make them wear padded head gear to minimise cuts. It might stop a few more acls by stopping helmet to knee tackles.

There are still plenty of concussions in Austrian Rules Football. Tackling, as bad as it is now, would get worse as no one would really go low to tackle.

Haha, aussie rules.

Go watch a game of rugby league to see how you tackle players with authority and without leading with your head.

Used to play rugby and while I agree you really learn how to tackle, we're pretty much always moving when tackling so there's no real chance to line up across from each other and run like a missile at someone like a safety. Not sure if taking helmets away would work.

I have been saying something similar for years. They keep making helmets "safer" so the players keep using their head as a tool instead of to think with. Mike Ditka once said that the only way to successfully limit the concussions in the NFL would be for them to go back to leather helmets. I wonder how many concussions they have in Aussie Rules Football.

Do you have a link to that? Not doubting you. Just interested as I coincidentally just posted about that.

So in all of this.... The whiners just promoted their DC to HC - correct? The guy seems like a real Neanderthal. No offense to Les. Now all of the sudden guys are getting the hell out of Dodge. Coincidence? I have to wonder.
