This board seems to take guys for granted-- until we get a replacement that sucks. Seen it happen at so many positions over the years.

Shelton seems like a smart, adequate player who's reliable and gets the protections right. Yeah we'll have to overpay to keep him, but that's just the nature of free agency. I bet many on here will whine about his contract if we are able to keep him.
And whine if we don't keep him.

Look how long it took Shelton to jump Allen. He's adequate I think with an experienced QB behind him, provided both guard spots are strong. But if they don't get Dotson done and RG ends up being iffy then we will have a mini-cell of weakness with 2 players in the middle.

Agreed, or find another unique rooking like Avila in the draft.

Again, going right over your head. Nobody here is saying paying him top starting C money, it all depends what Shelton and his agent thinks he's worth which you, me, or anybody on this board have no idea what that is at this point.
Keeping Shelton might be a hedge against them possibly losing Dotson. Would likley wouldn't want to have to bring in a new C and RG. If they can keep Shelton, not as desperate to pay top dollar to Dotson or if they simply can't keep Dotson, they aren't looking at two rookies on the interior or a lesser FA and a rookie.

Plus, if you draft a rookie RG high, he has a better chance to start and play well, playing next to a vet C.

Wait... hear me out... what if Shelton is an ascending player. What if, like, he gets better next year?
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. That dude has improved by a ton every single year. Who knows if he's maxed out or if he can keep improving.

It's possible, especially given the position he plays. However, Shelton will be 29 at the start of the season, and will be entering his seventh year in the NFL. So, 'ascending' might be a little overly optimistic.

Are you saying that 3/4 of this board are no longer ascending?

If we pay Shelton a market contract, why would we pick a rookie to start?

So we'll pay him starter money to play a depth role? Aren't we already doing that with Boom?

Dude, I didn't say top center money. I said starter money. Come on, if we can't have a conversation in good faith, what's the point?
Okay what's starter money? Connor Williams with the Dolphins is probably going to hit 5 year 67 mill 13.5 mill avg. Comparing that to the top 5 contracts out there what is Shelton worth? Your silly if you think he is only going to play for a million or two. I'd says he's definitely worth a 5-7 million contract where he can maybe start the season and have a rookie take over for him while being a legit G/C swing man on the inside. I'd pay him that much to guarantee the Rams against injury and devastating play. No gambling this year.

Also, I'd always love to have a conversation in good faith but from some in the past they really haven't went that way have they?

That's my questions is what we are planning to do with Dotson which heavily plays into what we plan to do with Shelton and what degree we are willing to antee up.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall listening to what their agents are wanting etc and what the Rams execs discussions are.

The nice thing here is I think we are in a position of strength in negotiating and with draft capital to get what we intend.

O-line is the most important team on the field. Shelton and Dotson will be back if the Rams are smart.

The only ascending Shelton will be doing is to the BBQ pit to load up his plate with another pound of ribs.

If you're suggesting he'll get 5-7 mill a year from us (thinking closer to 5) and then we'll draft a rookie to replace him this year or next than I think we disagree on the soundness of that strategy. Seems like an awful waste of money to me.

And if you're referring to me not arguing in good faith, I'm happy to be educated on that as it's not my intention and I don't think I do it.

But... but... that's how he ascends. How else do you think they get "sand in the pants?"

I would say he was good enough to make the team, but that's about it. He's replaceable.
Jesus, is developing players not a thing in your world? Sure, maybe he won't amount to anything but my god. He hasn't even had a full offseason in the NFL.

Edit: I'm gonna add an additional piece here. Outside of the top programs in the country, many of these guys have never had exposure to a professional weight and nutrition program before. This kid went to Youngstown State. You really can't even begin to tell what some of these guys on the line will look like till they've had a year in an NFL program and sometimes completely remake their bodies.

I definitely feel like you that it could be foreshadowing the loss of Dotson. As long as they’re drafting a replacement in the 2nd round, I’m okay with that.

I’m trying to adjust to a more modest FA mindset.

Midrange CB & Edge.. I’m thinking guys like Chase Young & Huff… not Hunter, sadly.
