Rams GM hints at urgent extension for Cooks

The Los Angeles Rams are going all-in for a Super Bowl this winter and it seems Brandin Cooks figures to be with the team for the long haul.

Cooks, acquired in a trade with the New England Patriots in April, is expected to be the Rams' top receiver in 2018, headlining a group that includes Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods.

The 24-year-old is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2018 season and Rams general manager Les Snead hinted at a possible extension for Cooks, noting that he's among many players that need new deals.

"We've been in discussions with his agents and they're well aware we want to get something done," Snead said to Adam Schein of Mad Dog Sports Radio. "We do think he's a perfect fit for us. We want to make sure that he's around, and around for a long time. We also have some other contracts we need to deal with over the next month, two months."

It's rare for a player as young and productive as Cooks to play for three teams before he turns 25, but it's key that the Rams lock up one of their best offensive weapons while emerging as the new power of the NFC West.

With what $$$?

Well, his hit cap hit is already $8.5MM for this season. Any extension likely keeps that nearly the same for 2018.

In a perfect world, Joyner is extended too at something lower than his $11.3MM cap hit this year... and Kevin D is able to front load all these deals as much as possible as Cooks hit will be bigger next year, for sure.

Extend Donald & Cooks and that with quiet the masses and make the trade for Cooks look even better....I believe in the Cooks deal, McVay feels he's the perfect fit for the offense and who am I to doubt Coach McVay!

We MUST sign him, imo. He is right behind Donald in my priorities of signing players.

Sounds like it's an imminent decision, not an urgent one. Difference of very soon and emergency. Whoever decided the title really should take journalism 101.

Now that my complaining is over, for now, I'm very pleased that the Rams are not putting this off, as I feel that Cooks will be an integral piece of the Rams success going forward.

By the way, has anyone informed Woods that Cooks is now the #1 receiver on the Rams?

This is looking like a terrible trade so far.

We could have had ANY rookie WR with the 23rd pick on a five year deal.

None of them come in and produce even half or maybe a third what Cooks will.

Why would he take less???
He loves LA??? I don't think Cook is more than $10 million a year wr....I'd put any player with Brees and Brady and watch them throw up several numbers...not any, but you know what I'm saying....

WR's....are crucial...I've seen that...but there's only a few Julio's....a few Antonio Brown's (who WAS clocked at 4.48 on his pro-day...)....and, Mike Evans....those guys are rare....I still remember how Julio was causing us problems in that playoff game...allowing Sanu to get off as well....

I'd think Cooks is worth what Wood's gets....no more...no less...

This is the problem. It has yet to be done. I keep thinking that they don't sign Donald and end up franchising him next year, making him more disgruntled about his contract. He wanted more last summer. It's a year later and no contract? His agent is likely urging him to hit free agency. I thought the contract would be done before the combine. I am a little worried and suspicious of how this is going at this point.

Snead said that he didn't think their was anyone they could get from round one that could do more for the team than Cooks.

Why is there such an urgency to extended Cooks? Rams took the 5th year option. Can't he get extended next year? They need to get Donald done...that's my #1 Rams concern. Why not take care of the foundation of your defense first, the dpoy, then work on the others.

Rams took the 5th year option for Peters.

Cooks is already on his 5th year.
