Tutu has shown shitty awareness on punt returns. That last game he caught the ball with a guy coming in and trying to time the hit to dislodge the ball. Which is a situation where you need to have enough awareness to utilize the fair catch mechanics.

It's a shame because his skill set is one that should be able to return punts and flip the field for us. But if they can't get his head right none of that matters. Still hoping he develops there of course because that's gonna be his best way of contributing to this year's team.

Just to clarify-- seems pretty clear that if the opponent is at midfield or closer, Kupp will go out to field the fair catch. But if the opponent is punting from their half of the field, and there's more of an opportunity for a decent return, Tutu will be the guy.
If TuTu doesn’t have the ability to be a full time punt returner now something is very seriously wrong.

At least he held onto it. Have to give him that credit.

He doesn't seem to drop punts or even passes for that matter (I know preseason only but sometimes it does gauge how a player is going to hang onto the ball).

I just think that McVay is being extra cautious with Tutu when it comes to being near the goal line.

Rookies have a tendency to do really stupid stuff even if they are good players.

I can see that but if they drafted him with all that talent on the board still and they aren’t comfortable with what they’ve seen in the OTA’s, TC, Pre-Season and Practices there is something very wrong. PR is one of the simplest things to grasp ahold of from college.

Seriously, I’m praying everyone can dog the shit out of me with McVay pulling a rabbit out the hat and saving them for the Bucs/Division/Packers for the #1 seed games and him and Desean kill it. It does feel a bit like McVay is sandbagging a bit

Oh I agree and as I stated earlier - I will gladly eat crow if Tutu shows anything more than a gadget player.

Plus we had good leads in both games until the punting team screw up.

Sure it's nice that he held on to it. But that's not really my focus in terms of discussing whether this guy might be our eventual PR. Whether it was dislodged that particular time I mean it would have sucked but what matters to me is him being able to do the job correctly by using the mechanics of a fair catch. If you can't do that then it means going forward there's going to be increased chances over time of turnovers and bad field position.

I am hoping he will at least learn when to fair catch and when not to fair catch.
