Other than Ike, I don't recall any very good players on the Rams back then. The Raiders weren't terrible. They had some key pieces in place. An outside pass rush is on everyone's list. Top WR too. I could see if Gruden was getting rid of bad apples, and unproductive players, but he's only trading the good ones. I get that he covets the picks and good players are the only ones that can land him high first or second rounders. I also get that he doesn't want big contracts mucking up his rebuild. But, he is rolling the dice here. Drafting good players isn't a given, even with first round picks. They won't necessarily be high first round picks either. Even in great first rounds the best players are gone in the top ten, for the most part. Mainly, he now has two extra firsts. It's a long shot that he will be able to replace Cooper, and nearly impossible to replace Mack. If he trades Carr, then he is certifiable. QBs are tough to find. That's why I say that he is buying into his own legend a bit too much.

Through all of these shenanigans he seems to have garnered a lot of criticism from his players. That's a bad way to start. He may have to get rid of a lot more before it's said and done. Disgruntled players are bad for fixing a roster.

At this point, he seems to have been out of coaching a bit too long. But, as you pointed out so was Vermeil, but he was acquiring great players instead of trading them.
Vermeil had some good players:

1997: Pace, K. Carter, Lyght
1998: T. Horne (special teams)
1999: Holt, Added Faulk

Vermeil had his player revolt thing going on too as I'm sure you recall, because of the long practices, etc.

If Gruden wants to be able to win some games next year he has to keep Carr. The Oregon kid's gonna need time, he'll be overdrafted, and it's critical that Gruden snap up one of several good defensive prospects that will go very early.

I'd be very surprised if he moves Carr, who should be ok once the players get assembled around him. He's young enough that Chucky can build around him, so if he is moved it means Chucky feels like he's not willing to do the work and/or get in line with the program.
Yeah I hear you just knowing how Gruden is I see him having ‘his’ guy there for a decade overhaul tbh. I’m sure there is things about Carr that drives him nuts! Lol

But if Carr ever gets a supporting cast he’s not bad. Idk if he’s top tier still. I bet the Texans would Pay a pretty penny for him while getting a Bridgewater type of QB to tide things over until the rookie gets it going.

The key here is that Gruden knows he's got a rebuild ahead, and he's got an elite player the team can't afford and/or come to terms with in Mack. The trade was basically recouping something to avoid the holdout and drama and everything revolving around it when he knows he has to restack the roster with guys who will arrive in the same window. It was a business trade and those happen.

The Cooper trade was similar in that he's got a near-elite wideout who quits on routes and who isn't buying in to what he's selling. I mean Cooper clearly wasn't interested in pi$$ing his good years away while the Raiduhs rebuild.

That roster is going to need a couple drafts and FA additions. This draft is loaded with defensive front talent, to a degree even moreso than last years which is saying a lot. He'll probably play the strengths of the draft to replace Mack with someone they can afford and pray they hit big, beef up the defense overall, and sign some FAs who can run good routes that fit his offense. This offense doesn't need great wideouts, it needs technicians.

Gruden will look like an idiot if they whiff on the picks. But that's the NFL man. You gotta hit on picks to a certain degree to sustain winning, and if you're rebuilding which they are. If he hits on most of them, though, he can start changing the team from a roster loaded with old players who can't win to a younger roster with better fits for what he wants to do.

Do you not think Carr is a good QB? He has sucked the last few years but had some solid years before the injurys started hitting him. TD int Ratio has been solid, a little low completion percentage and definitely doesn't have the YPC that Goff has but few QBs do.

I think Carr has faults that are hindering Cooper. I also think the system has hindered him.

Marcus Thompson II of TheAthletic.com reports that Carr currently has a fractured relationship with his teammates. The reportedly fractured relationship between Carr and his teammates is rooted in a loss of confidence in the quarterback, as exacerbated by game film from the London contest against the Seahawks that “showed what looked like him crying after being sacked and injuring his arm.”

“They saw his face,” Thompson writes. “They heard his whimper. They witnessed him explain on the sidelines. They assuredly watched it again in film session. It’s hard to see how Carr can lead this team again.”
