Let's give it a few more years let alone a few games before everyone starts judging. I understand many of you want to post "I told you so." But every draft needs a few years before you can do a proper analyses.

One other thing I want the younger posters to understand back 1n 1993 I wanted the Rams to draft an offensive lineman out of Nebraska by the name of Will Shields and the Rams under the 2nd regime of Chuck Knox selected RB Russell White out of California after selecting RB Jerome Bettis in the first round.

Shields is now in the a hall of fame and Russell White lasted one year in the NFL, however, I also recognize for every Shields I also wanted the Zach Wiegert's and Sean Gilbert's too so try to remember the ones you were wrong about as well.

you mean, was forced to because Jake Long was probowl this...yada yada, veteran that....That was silly...Cause G-Rob has excellent agility for a man his size...

C'mon we both know he had issues with pass blocking out of college. His own line coach even said it.

Well just based on Conditioning we saw our OT taken so much lower than Peat lose 70 lbs of fat and add some meaningfull muscle mass as his conditioning is not in question nor his effort as he even stays after practice just to work reps moving off the line as he at least realizes just how far the change from college to the Pro's is gonna be and Chris Long is saying some very good things about Havenstein and the fact he will be our guy in time this year. I agree if we keep the heat on from our awesome front 4 on the DL Rob Havenstein if not injured will run block as well as anyone we have and is still having his occasional miss by some great pass rushers. Peat may have more of a feeling of entitlement being taken so high. I don't think he has put in the work.

Havenstein is working to make the team first then take things step by step from there. I love his mindset a TON over Peat and his GOD given size. Both need work on speed rushers. I think we did awesome in our top two taken OL (Havenstein and Brown). I wanted Penn State's OT myself but Havenstein has shown me he will do everything humanly possible to change his body to a Pro OT body. Now he is showing me he will put in the time to learn this offense and be someone that does'nt stick out as a weakness. Run blocking is really looking good and an occasional miss with our PB speed rushers. Not getting bull rushed either once the pads came on. A true lunch pail guy with the right head on his shoulders. So far his length of time playing at this one spot is paying off. Great scouting as with J. Brown moving inside to OG from Louisville. Its our Center spot I'm most concerned with at this time. Maybe things will settle with pre-season games . I sure hope so. Rob is not our biggest worry by no means.

Watching Rob very closely and all I've seen that makes me worry is his hands on hips late in practice as J. Brown is too. Its just such a MAJOR adjustment to the pro game and practices. It will only make him better.

All I'm saying is it's awful early. Not judging any one's favorite players. Way too early to write him off yet.

Yes its sure does.... in hind site the passing on the ORT position would appear at the moment anyway as a very smart move by Snead/Fisher.

The top three OT drafted:
1st#5-OLT/ORT-Scherff, Brandon
1st#9-ORT-Flowers, Ereck
1st#13-OLT/ORT-Peat, Andrus

The Washington Post reports the Redskins are serious about potentially kicking No. 5 overall pick OT Brandon Scherff inside to guard. Scherff has reportedly looked "more comfortable" at guard than tackle.
http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/10422/brandon-scherff

Brandon Scherff again worked at right guard, with Morgan Moses still starting at right tackle. Scherff appears to be making adjustments, as is Moses. J.J. Watt didn’t have the disruptive kind of day he had on Thursday. During 2-on-2 blocking/rushing drills, Scherff and Moses actually managed to combine to put Watt on his backside during one of their matchups.

Coaches really are intrigued by the possibility of this Scherff-Moses right side. Again, no final decisions are made. But they believe that they have a chance to develop into a formidable tandem. Yes, Washington spent a fifth overall pick on Scherff, and people will say that’s too high to take a guard.

Several veterans say that Scherff looks more comfortable at guard, where he is better able to better put his impressive strength to use. This isn’t to say that Scherff can’t develop the footwork to become a standout tackle in the NFL. But teammates say he appears to have less to worry about and is playing to his forte. Stay tuned.

So Schreff is doing just fine then.

As the guys are saying- awful early to write him off. He's just out of condition. That said - I said at the combine on here that there was something in his body shape I didn't like. Lots of fat.

When a NFL player, in his early 20's, comes into his rookie season out of condition it has to raise a big red flag. Can you imagine the long thread here if Rams drafted this guy. Yikes!

It was Flowers for me...and, seems only his injury has slowed his move to LT....And he's truly a monster.& Donovan Smith ..Bunch of young bucks were saying Scherff...Peat....and anyone that saw Pea'ts lower body (jiggly meat, way too big calves, 0 muscle tone) should know that he wasn't an elite athlete. Plus, much like Baylor and Jason Smith, I'm not messing with a Stanford Cardinal lineman after this Jonathon Martin fiasco....Serious....I take raw power & athleticism over technique every day...I mean, just check out the guys that go to the HOF....yeah you have a few technicians, but most of the linemen are physical & athletic men, that are mean & nasty....

I will add, I think Scherff will do well at OG...And Humphries will do well at RT or LT...

These last few drafts, the tackles have really been a crap shoot...That Armstead guy at NO, the dude the Eagles drafted (Lane Johnson) are some of the truly good looking tackles...Mathews was getting beat like a drum....On hardknocks, I felt sorry for him going against #99 of the Texans....He's probably a RT or OG....Fischer & Jockel....look like garbage...I'd be terrified if I was their QB

I liked Lane Johnson but he has been a disappointment here in Phila. Maybe he comes through this year. It really is hard judging these guys.

Me too...shoot for the moon in the first round....

All rookie linemen, to a man, have trouble with pass blocking. Especially the offensive left tackle position...they face the best athlete, often the best player, on the opposing team. Right tackle is similar, but the LE is often not as talented as the RE,which is usually a QB's "blind side".....

So, dominant run blocker, struggles with pass pro....name one rookie tackle that hasn't been his story....

Wasn't Scherff always a RT/OG prospect though?

Our own tackle had to move inside as well, so it's really early.
Scherrf was drafted to play OT. His spot inside the top 10 showed that. but I do agree. My point is ... if they play G or T ... as long as they excel ... should it matter?

But that's the point I was trying to make...too early to judge a rookie. He hasn't even gotten to his first preseason game yet. If a guy can improve his pass blocking he can improve his condition. It's the easiest thing to improve.

I agree absolutely. I'd draft a guard in the top 5 if I thought he'd be a dominant player. Draft the player not the position.

.too early to judge a rookie
Dude comes to camp outta shape, gets busted for.....anything....or misses assignments...No matter what, impressions are being formed, lazy, stupid, addict...just the way we (humans) are...Works in the reverse too...remember plays, assignments, asking intelligent questions, staying after practice late, arriving early...judgments are being formed...And should be...

Then what's that say about Pead, Austin, Quick, GRob, Jones, Etc? All of those guys haven't lived up to their draft status yet. Not even remotely close. Yet we're looking to count on them all this year. Way, way too early to judge. And the OP just mentioned conditioning. Nothing about smarts or anything else.

@blue4 , IDK....top 15 pick....and lazy & out of shape...hmmm. My feelings are, it's nervous time...Conditioning & 300+lbs...could be problems

Now, my real target....
Joe Thomas, Jake Long
I'll give you Joe Thomas...but I bet I could google Joe Thomas...pass blocking and find something...but Jake I wanted to see, I have heard so much about him, but the image of Ware trucking him is still fresh in my mind....
2008 Miami 1st game vs Jets & Farve (woo-hoo!), Chad Pennington is the QB, wonder was Brett texting Jen then?...balls not really going downfield (Chad has a notorious weak arm) Ellis gets a sack, Long had a tripping call...Not bad for a rookie...In fact, they ended up 11-5 that season...But is this a better run blocking tackle? as a rookie?
The next game versus Az..the Dolphins barely scored again...http://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/200809140crd.htm...bunch of short passes....just not really gonna see elite tackle or pass blocking play outta this type of offense...was it the QB? Probably...But still, until I see proof, I doubt most rookies excel at pass blocking. It just doesn't happen...They get help from TE's & RB's, the plays will be shorter & quicker...all in the attempt to increase his acclimation to the pro game....

In those two games, it appears that Miami never completed a pass longer than 20 yards...I'd say 15, but it could be one in there...The majority were 5-6-7-8-9 yard gains....I'd like to review the later games when they began to win...but I want to see if Long was doing anything so special that basic play-by-play would show...PFF didn't work for me...2008, Jake Long...so no comparison as of yet.....

Awful early to write him off, seeing as how our second overall pick T has yet to break out. Probably needs some growing up. I wonder how his actual technique is. Conditioning you can fix, to some extent.
You can't fix the lack of heart..Gregg Robinson never lacked that

Learning technique, and gaining skill is one thing..Lack of conditioning says a lot about the man, and the seriousness he has about his job..We can judge this now (talking about Peat)

Scherff is also being mentioned as being kicked inside to OG ,as he fits better .... So there is another "high draft pick" LT that is being moved to OG already.
I have no idea why people thought he'd be an OT. That one comes as no surprise. I was so happy when WAS took him.

Andrus Peat - T - Saints
The Saints are concerned with first-round OT Andrus Peat’s conditioning.

"In 15 years of covering the NFL, I've never seen a player struggle as much as Peat did on Friday," reporter Jeff Duncan said. Peat also dealt with conditioning issues at OTAs. He’s been a disappointment in training camp, working mostly with the second team. Zach Strief remains comfortably ahead of Peat.

Source:New Orleans Times-Picayune per rotoworld.

.

I am guilty! From the players that were available I probably would had taken Peat (Tough choice between him and Parker!)! But, I am thrilled the Rams didn't listen to me!!! I think a healthy Gurley is going to do wonders for the Rams Offense!
