The Rams need to pick a number for each CB and draw a line in the sand and stick to that number.

Here's why the Rams are negotiating from a position of some strength....

1) Both JJ and Tru are good to very good CB's. But neither are elite. Neither has yet been a Pro Bowler. By contrast, Donald and Gurley have 3 combined years in the league yet have 3 Pro Bowls between them. THAT'S elite. Our CB's are 0 for 8 between them.

2) It's not like our cupboard is bare at CB. In fact, Gaines was thought to be the favorite to beat out Tru last year before the injury. Let that sink in for a moment. And Roberson has shown promise, as well.

3) This draft is reportedly loaded with quality CB's. Any one of which would be an inexpensive alternative to resigning our FA's.

4) Snead has proven to have the ability to find quality CB's from round 2 down to UDFA'S. It's reasonable to think he can do it again.

Sounds like the Rams can find the cap dollars to sign both CB's if they're gonna be reasonable. Also sounds like both players like it here and would like to stay with the team.

It would be wonderful to resign both and allow resources to be devoted to other positions of need, of course. But there's no way that the Rams should allow themselves to be held hostage by these CB's, either. Both are strong "wants" but neither is an actual "need".

Other opinions may vary, of course. Lol.

I agree. They are good CBs but the drop off just isn't big enough to justify crazy money. Let someone else pay them a max contract if that's all they will accept.

Do we adjust that number if one of them sign elsewhere?

Fact is at this point in time Fisher has only two legit outside CB's signed (Roberson/Gaines). Joyner is a good Nickel but should not line up outside with any regularity. That is it. Gaines has one big question mark stamped on his uni due to that serious injury & late 2015 pre season surgery. This 2016 draft has a ocean-liner full of good CB's that should present great value with those two second round selections.

Fisher/Snead really are in decent shape here to survive the possible loss of both JJ & Tru. Two talented rookies entering the CB unit stands to hold up well overall. If both our UFA's decided to go for crazy $$ then Rodney McLeod & Mark Barron would benefit greatly.

It should be noted here that if you go back & watch the last two games (Seahawks/9ers) you will see Rodney McLeod being moved into single coverage over the slots & wide outs but playing as the Nickle corner. Point is Rod McLeod can play the Nickle & Dime corners. That would permit those CB's entering their third season Gaines/Roberson/Joyner to hold the fort.

You are correct in your assessment that this draft is pretty deep in corners....Everyone should remember my rant on 7-on-7 passing leagues developing QB's & WR's...Guess what, DB's are getting better too. And there are plenty... I'd guess about 30 corners are coming into the league, and probably 15 are ready to start right away.....after character issues, the talent is there.

Still, I'd try to sign both Tru & JJ for around 5-8 million a year....5 for Tru, 7-8 for Jenkins.

I agree... I think Jenkins is going to go for the gold... Johnson maybe not as much.

Set a limit and stick to it.

I wouldn't gauge their talent of pro bowls as that game and the votes are a joke.

It's obvious from JJ's previous tweets / comments that he's going for the $$. I wonder if this move to LA changes things for them. Both young guys who have big personalities... they might be tempted to stay in LA, on a good defense on an improving team and enjoy the LA lifestyle at the same time. Tru is tight with Fisher. He and Fish's son were teammates at Montana and that might help get him signed too.

The reason they're not considered "elite" is because they're not running their mouths to the media telling everyone that they are.

Sherman, Revis, Norman, Peterson...

All top corners, all have told the world they're the best multiple times. Meanwhile, Tru has 7 picks, JJ gives up only one TD and they say nothing. People don't even know who Tru is.

Donald and Gurley made the probowl because of their (deserved) hype. Hype makes the fans know you. Fans knowing your name = probowl.

If Johnson played on a popular team, he would have been a probowler this year.

And we have to sign at least one of these guys, we can't let em both walk and throw a couple rookies back there.

It would be nice to keep both Tru and Jenks, but only at a reasonable cost as mentioned above. But remember Fisher and Snead found 2 starting CBs in the draft of 2012, they could always do it again, but that would mean some growing pains as they learn what Tru and Jenks have already experienced in the Rams D scheme.

We did it before... LOL
In year one of a rebuilding phase, sure. If you're referring to 2012...although Finnegan was brought in to start opposite Jenks to soften the blow.
The 2016 Rams are not rebuilding a defense.

We are keeping one, we just have to if we are to be taken seriously as an organization that claims they are "building" through the draft - you just gotta keep the talent you have if consistency and stability is hat you're preaching.

I love Janoris and don't want to change my avatar just yet, but him with big money in LA is sort of disconcerting haha - I've been going back and forth between whether Tru or Janoris would be better

That gives us the opportunity to lock up McLeod who deserves that new contract more than either JJ or Tru

Good thing we have Gaines and Joyner and especially Roberson

Another good thing is I fully believe we are drafting CB's this draft regardless of who we sign since -- it's such a deep draft and this is a Fisher led team -- we can go WR, QB, and MLB with the first 3 premium picks and stock up on CB in the later rounds

I still think the lure of Los Angeles is gonna be huge , sure , Tru or Janoris might be able to sign else where for more money , but it won't be Los Angeles , Hollywood , Beverly Hills , Swimming Pools , Movie Stars

Even if one , or even both decide they don't want to go to LA , I'm sure there are some other pretty good DB's out there would love to go to LA

I'm just thinking when KroenekWorld opens up and the NFL Network moves into the same building , what football player who dreams of becoming a sports broadcaster after thier playing days are over isn't going to want to play in the same building as the NFL Network

I truly believe the success of the Los Angeles Rams will rest solely with the coaching staff

Is JJ worth a franchise tag? What if we signed Johnson, and franchised Jenkins and draft two CBs in this years draft. You know Jenkins will play
lights out on a one year deal, and we can ease the rooks in.

Jack Rabbit and Tru both deserve HUGE paydays. Of course they want to get paid.

You don't let playmakers leave your team when they are in their prime.

Pay them both what they've earned and more.

Cap is going up like what, $10 million? CB is an elite position, right there with pass rushers in today's league. Whichever of them hits the market is gonna get PAID. This is why I keep saying the Rams will keep one of them, not both. IF they just sign one of them plus Barron:

CB: Jenks
CB: Gaines
Slot CB: Joyner

FS: McDonald
SS: Alexander
SS/LB: Barron

Only thing the Rams need is depth and they are VERY astute at drafting secondary.

Try to sign them both if possible. This team is already looking at below average play at MLB, RDE, QB, WR, and TE. Why add corner to the mix? They only have what? picks? And if they trade up to get a QB then it is likely much less than that. Keep em in the fold and limit the needs in the draft.

Players follow the money..........otherwise everyone would leave Green Bay as fast as they could.

It's always about the money until the twilight then maybe, maybe, maybe it's about winning a title.
