Report: Bryce Petty has “considerable” MCL injury

Jets quarterback Bryce Petty left Saturday night’s game against the Giants late in the fourth quarter after injuring his knee and said after the game that the knee didn’t feel stable, which means tests to see how severe the injury is and how long he’ll be out of action.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the initial belief is that Petty avoided an ACL injury, but that he suffered a “considerable” injury to his MCL. A fuller picture of his outlook will come after all tests have been completed, but it’s a good bet that Petty is going to miss a considerable amount of time if the first diagnosis is confirmed.

If the ultimate timeline is long enough, Petty could go on injured reserve with the possibility of returning later in the year. While coach Todd Bowles hasn’t made any public determination about a starter for Week One, Petty probably wasn’t in the running for the role after working behind Christian Hackenberg this preseason so that shouldn’t cause too much upheaval to the depth chart.

The Jets could go with just two quarterbacks on their 53-man roster, but Petty’s injury means the team will probably need to another quarterback for Thursday’s preseason finale.

Any update on Hemingway? ACL??

**edit... McVay said ankle

Not yet. Probably Monday before we know.

Stop the freakin low shots. freakin scumbags man. If you can't tackle safely, find another job.
If he goes for a "safe" hit when Meredith drops down he's a head hunting scum bag. Defenders can't win.

Bears believe Cameron Meredith tore his ACL

Bears wide receiver Cameron Meredith left Sunday’s game against the Titans in the first quarter with a left knee injury and it looks like that will be the last time he sees the field this year.

Pam Oliver of FOX Sports reported early in the third quarter of the game that the Bears believe Meredith suffered a torn ACL. Meredith’s leg bent the wrong way when he was brought down at the end of a play and it was quickly immobilized before Meredith rode a cart to the locker room.

Meredith was Chicago’s leading receiver last year and his injury will increase the need for 2015 first-round pick Kevin White to make good on his potential after two years that were all but wiped out due to injury.

The Bears also saw cornerback Prince Amukamara depart for the day with an ankle injury and long snapper Patrick Scales is out with a knee injury. Offensive lineman Bradley Sowellhas taken over the snapping duties without incident since Scales left in the first half.

A dozen ACLs a week. It's fuckin rediculous. Shit needs to change or there won't be an NFL in 20 years.

Dang, I was hoping to get Cam Meredith in fantasy this year.

And people wonder why our coach didn't play more than half the starters.

The Bears not only lost receiver Cameron Meredith, but it appears they will have to find a new long snapper this week. Patrick Scales left with a knee injury in the first half.

Coach John Fox said, via the team’s Twitter page, that the team suspects Scales’ injury is “serious.”

Scales’ departure left reserve left tackle Bradley Sowell to handle the long-snapping duties.

Scales, 29, played in all 16 games for the Bears last season after re-signing him just before the season opener. He played two games for the Ravens in 2014 and five in 2015.

What? How hard is it to tackle around the thighs? Going that low when the player is getting hit high from the other side is a dog act. And a usual suspect was to blame.

He went right at the thighs but as the player scrunched down it's knee high when he gets hit. Again no matter what the defender does it's got the potential to be a problem. I'm not defending the guy but no matter what they do somebody is going to be mad at them.

Second-year tight end Temarrick Hemingway will be out for a significant amount of time after suffering a fractured fibula on Saturday, head coach Sean McVay said on Sunday.

“Unfortunate for him because he was one of those that [we’d] seen a lot of encouraging things [from], did a lot of really good things on the line of scrimmage — especially in the run game,” McVay said. “So that’s a big loss for us. And it’s going to require some guys to step up in his absence. And we’ll see how guys handle that.”

Hemingway was carted off the field following a nine-yard run by Malcolm Brown in the second quarter of Saturday’s preseason matchup against the Chargers. According to McVay, Hemingway is slated to have surgery on Tuesday. After the procedure, McVay said there will be more clarity on the extent of the injury and a timetable for recovery.

“There’s a couple different ways that it could play out, where it could potentially be an eight-to-10-week thing, where he’d be one of those guys [who’s a candidate] for the IR/designated to return possibility,” McVay said. “But if you go in there and you find some different things based on him getting rolled up on, it could be a three-to-four-month injury. So you can’t really say until you fully have the surgery, get in there, and see the specifics of what’s going on.”

Selected in the sixth round of last year’s draft out of South Carolina State, Hemingway was mainly a special teams contributor as a rookie, but had been carving out a significant role for himself in McVay’s offense.

“He was one of the guys that I was extremely encouraged with — we were as a staff — and really counting on him for some big things,” McVay said. “I think when you talk about the length, the athleticism, his movement — when he gets the ball in his hands, he can create after the catch. He offered a lot of flexibility with what we could do with some of our personnel groupings.

“So it’s a big loss for us,” McVay continued. “And, like I said, it’ll be interesting to see who steps up to fill that void because there certainly is one left by what we had anticipated for Temarrick for the start of the season.”

With Hemingway sidelined, McVay said tight ends like Tyler Higbee and Gerald Everett may have to contribute more in the run game. And Cory Harkeycontinues to be an option at the position, too.

“What Cory Harkey has been to this organization over the last couple years offers him an opportunity to step up,” McVay said. “Cory’s a good football player that does bring some versatility to the position, and those are very helpful things for us.”

Two younger tight ends who will have a chance to showcase their talents on Thursday against Green Bay are Johnny Mundt and Travis Wilson.

“[T]hey’ll get a lot of snaps and it will be a great opportunity for us to evaluate them as well,” McVay said.

If you look at the replay his leg planted wrong and his knee looked like it already blew before the actual tackle

Bummer on Hemingway, I liked him, and he looked to play some part in the offense based off of preseason.
