Game Day Thread

The GDT is a live thread tradition here at ROD.

While we all get fired up watching the game, please remember our core principles; we always show respect for our team and each other.

Despite the emotional highs and lows watching a game, we will moderate this thread with that in mind, however please refrain from name calling. This applies to players, the Rams organization, and others.

This is the core rule of the GDT. Moderators are tasked to issue thread bans, at a minimum, to maintain this standard.

This is our team. Win or lose. Good days and bad.

A more loosely moderated atmosphere can be found in the chat room.

Go Rams!

Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Los Angeles Rams

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be traveling to United Airlines Field at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum this upcoming Sunday to take on the Los Angeles Rams.

Tampa Bay is coming off a brutal loss to the New York Giants where they blew an 18-point lead. That defeat puts the team's record at a pedestrian 1-2. Meanwhile, the Rams (3-0) have opened their NFC title defense a perfect 3-0 but have yet to look really impressive in any of their games.

It will be interesting to see if Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians and company can stop that LA momentum as both teams reach the quarter point of the regular season.

Tampa Bay at Los Angeles

Kickoff: Sunday, Sept. 29 at 4:05 p.m. ET
TV: FOX
Spread: Rams -9

Three Things to Watch

1. Tampa Bay... road warriors?

The sample size is way too small to be able to get an accurate representation, but it is worth noting that Tampa Bay is 0-2 on the season at home and 1-0 on the road.

Yet again, that is not enough of a sample size to label these Buccaneers "road warriors." But it might be time to consider it if they come away with a victory, especially considering it would be against one of the last unbeaten teams in the NFL. The Tampa Bay defense put up its best effort in the 20-14 Week 2 win in Carolina, holding Christian McCaffrey to just 37 rushing yards and sacking Cam Newton three times.

2. Can the Shaq sack streak continue?

In many ways, Shaq Barrett was a castoff on the Denver Broncos. He put up decent numbers (22.0 sacks in his last four seasons), but the team elected not to re-sign him when his contract came up for renewal.

Well, the Broncos' loss is Tampa Bay’s gain. Barrett leads the NFL in sacks (8.0) in 2019, which includes 7.0 sacks over the last two games alone.

The Rams are in the middle of the pack when it comes to sacks allowed (2.0 per game), but the tackle duo of Andrew Whitworth and Rob Havenstein is usually steady. Can Barrett continue to find success on Sunday?

3. Which version of Jameis Winston shows up?

Winston had a rocky start to the season. In the 31-17 Week 1 loss to San Francisco, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft threw for less than 200 yards while tossing three interceptions (plus two fumbles) and only one touchdown. To make matters worse, two of Winston's picks were returned for touchdowns by the 49ers.

Since then, he's produced 588 passing yards, four touchdowns and only one interception in the last two weeks. He has been sacked seven times during that span (and 10 on the season) so that's definitely something to keep an eye on going up against a Rams defense that features two-time reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald.

Are Winston's recent numbers sustainable for a guy who has thrown 62 interceptions in 59 career games? The answer to that question will go a long way in determining if the Bucs have a chance to at least keep things close on Sunday.

Final Analysis

The Buccaneers have a lot of offensive talent, but the defense still leaves a lot to be desired — especially with rookie linebacker Devin White possibly on the shelf for a second consecutive week.

Combine that with being on the road against Sean McVay' high-powered offense, and it does not exactly look like a recipe for success for Tampa Bay.

In the end, the Rams prove to be too much and move to 4-0 on the season. Meanwhile, the Bucs fall to 1-3 in Arians' first season as head coach.

Prediction: Rams 27, Buccaneers 17

Opposing View: Bucs coach Bruce Arians says Sean McVay's success a credit to upbringing, staff

Thousand Oaks, Calif. - Sean McVay's offensive creativity, and corresponding success as the youngest head coach in the NFL, produced an intriguing – albeit short-lived – trend this offseason.

Eager to replicate those facets, teams with vacancies at that position sought out candidates with similar traits to fill them. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were one of the exceptions, though, as they brought 25-year NFL coaching veteran Bruce Arians out of retirement to lead their club.

Asked about the trend when he was hired in January, Arians told the Arizona Republic "there is only one Sean McVay." Asked about that comment eight months later during a conference call with Rams beat writers this week, Arians said it's his upbringing the people around McVay that have helped McVay be successful.

"When you look at Sean (McVay) and also (49ers Head Coach) Kyle Shanahan, they grew up in the business," Arians said. "They were practicing as kids all the time and they got lucky and got under some really good coaches early in their careers and saw how a team was managed. They have quite (the) offensive minds and they hired really good defensive people."

For McVay, his childhood included watching his grandfather, John, oversee five Super Bowl championship teams in various roles with the San Francisco 49ers from 1979-95, a feat which earned him an induction into the club's hall of fame in 2013. Sean broke into the league working for current Raiders coach Jon Gruden when Gruden was with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where Gruden won a Super Bowl in his first season.

Two teams looked to gain some of that wisdom likely passed down from grandfather to grandson earlier this year.

Of the eight new head coaches in 2019, two worked with the younger McVay at some point during their careers. Six of those eight, including the former McVay assistants, are first-time NFL head coaches.

The Bengals' Zac Taylor served an assistant wide receivers coach during McVay's first season with Los Angeles in 2017, then was L.A.'s quarterbacks coach in 2018 before getting hired by Cincinnati. The Packers' Matt LaFluer was McVay's offensive coordinator in 2017 before taking the same position with the Titans in 2018.

As Arians pointed out in the Arizona Republic article, juggling calling plays and overseeing an entire team for the first time presents a challenge for these rookie head coaches. Those coaches have attempted to balance it out that inexperience, as well as their heavy offensive background in some cases, over the last two hiring cycles by bringing in veteran defensive coordinators – or, as the Washington Post recently wrote, a head coach of the defense.

One could make the argument that McVay ahead of the curve, in that sense, when he hired then 41-year NFL coaching vet Wade Phillips away from the Denver Broncos to be his defensive coordinator and retained 2016 interim head coach John Fassel as his special teams coordinator.

"Sean, I think, especially (hired really good defensive people)," Arians said. "He allowed himself to just focus offensively because Wade is handling them and (Special Teams Coordinator John Fassel) ‘Bones’ handles his special teams."

While growing up around the game of football and having an accomplished coaching staff help set up a young head coach for success, it's also important for them to connect with them.

"He’s got a great staff, but I think he has a great rapport with his team, too," Arians said of McVay. "He’s got a great feel for his team."

I am too. It feels like a game we should win... Perhaps lower tension.

But, it’s the NFL. You never know....

I keep screwing up on guessing the final game scores because, like many posters, I continue to anticipate the Horns' O to break out into full rhythm. Meanwhile it is the D that continues to make impressive refinements each contest. The special teams unit is improving at a lesser pace than the D, while the high flying O of 2018 is still struggling with hiccups in the 1st halves of games. It's high time to unleash the Gurley Express! and Gerald Everett so Jared can maximize his options.

Tampa's D is supposedly the fourth straight solid D we will be facing this season. I say it is high time the Horns' O starts flexing its many muscles and begin with the Battering Ram rushing game supplemented with play action passing to every Horn with hands. We need to issue a statement to our NFC West foes before we commence beating the snot out of each one. We are still the Sheriff of the NFC, and we are bucking to become the Class of the NFL!

I hope, when the Rams win, that McVay says something along the lines of, “what did you expect? He’s an 8-8 coach.”

Another football Sunday with the tried and true die hard Rams fans! Thanks for being my football "brothers at arms" all these years. I'm going to the game and it's going to be nearly perfect football weather (a high of about 72 degrees and no rain). I got a new Jack Youngblood jersey I'll be wearing for the first time today, so I want you to take a moment and remember that new jersey smell. No, not that New Jersey! GO RAMS!

FYI, the countdown timer for the game is off by 3 hours. The Rams play the Bucs in Los Angeles and it's a 4:05pm EDT game.

As of now, the game is 5 hours, 50 mins off give or take.

It’s the only timer available and it doesn’t correct for time zones.(y)

So, it’s best counting down the right day... and approximate time. It should be correct for the folks in LA if I’ve cheated it right (I am not on Pacific time either).

Seems set for Pacific Standard time and 1) we're still in Daylight Savings Time and 2) all TV games are published in Eastern time (standard or daylight depending on the date).

No worries. All set for the game. Just was giving a heads up in case it was something possible to change.

If you are an out of towner going to the game consider the metro.
Spent $220 for Uber going and coming back from a concert right next to the Coliseum....a 22 mile trip each way.
Spent $3.50 round trip using the metro to the game the next day. It was clean and safe.

Just like with the Browns last week this is a secondary we should be able to take advantage of. Rams just gotta do their jobs and execute and they should win this one comfortably.

OR they could continue what they've been doing and give us heart palpitations deep into the 4th Quarter. I'm ready for that this week, mentally speaking. Got my expectations firmly held in check this time around. :p
