Not gonna list guys like Vea, or Edmunds, who have zero chance to get to us IMO. Trying to keep it real is tough, though, because it's a deep group...

1. CB Josh Jackson. He might slide due to team preferences in the top CB group and if so is a perennial pro bowler in this defense.

2. CB Mike Hughes. Might end up being the best CB from this class, he has that kind of ability. Great fit for us too.

3. ILB Rashaan Evans. Can do it all. Under Wade this dude is an impact selection who can rush on passing downs or stuff his run fits on run downs.

4. NT Da'Ron Payne. Plug and play starter for a defense that needs to toughen up.

5. ILB Leighton Vander Esch. Not as physical or as flexible as Evans, but he is big, fast, and disciplined and will have a long and decorated career for some lucky team IMO.

Hoping for Evans (#32) man...
Here's a real nice writeup from a few days ago on him
As usual our thinking is close.
#1-CB Mike Hughes
#2-NT Da Ron Payne
#3-OLB Harold Landry
#4-ILB Rashaan Evans (Insert now with the Ogletree trade)
#5-LG Isaiah Wynn (Rams have huge need to get talented depth in the OL to replace 4 of the 5 pending UFA's 2017/2018)

Even with the recent additions of 3 veteran pro bowl starters for KC, Denver & Packers.....I still would not rule out Snead drafting one of those top five rated corners prospects. Snead & Wade know the super value of very good corners to the defense. I can easily see two of the below corners being there @ #23.

JOSH JACKSON

DENZEL WARD
CARLTON DAVIS
ISAIAH OLIVER
MIKE HUGHES

For the first round it's got to be either Vita Vea, Da'Ron Payne, Joshua Jackson, or Mike McGlinchey.

In a trade down, I'd like Hercules Mata'afa or Dorance Armstrong.

Third round choice is Shaquem Griffin.

The later round choice - and my favorite prospect in this draft - J.C. Jackson.

Pretty sure Griffin is gonna go in the second round as a result of his combine.

He's no longer a sleeper pick.

Agreed Boni. Would not rule it out, can't have enough corners and their value is just stupid up high in this draft, and they have a 2 year window with their starters now.

But the Rams' needs at LB are great enough that I hope they'll go for the ILB or OLB. Maybe even the NT. Depends on the values on their board of course. I'm definitely thinkin LB now though.

I think we need to do something with Barron. He is fast and fun, but we need some size in the middle to take up blockers. Our run defense needs to improve
We could keep Barron, because of what he does right, and add to the D-Rotaion depth at LB!(y);)

IMO they really  what Mark did in 2017 under the Wade D. But there are two big issues with Mark.... First all those injuries:cautious::(:notsure: in 2017. His soon to be 29 yr old body show signs of wear & tear on that over 6-2 220-225 pound frame. Second is Mark's high end mega $$$$ salary. Rams paying $9 million for a ILB'er he needs to be near All Pro level. As we know we had major issues in the run D in 2017.

It would appear that the Rams :admin:Org ID two of the run D problems & traded them away this past week. Just so happens that Quinn played LB'er on the weak side same as Mark. Then Tree played LB right next to the left of Barron. So just maybe the plan might be to get a better cadre of players surrounding Barron...I just don't know:cautious:. But if the $$ gets tight & it sure looks like it will, then Mark could still be cut-bait.

I even went as far to even look @ the moving of Mark back to the strong safety post & team him with JJ III with Lamarcus Joyner getting all the Nickle corner action now that NR-C is no longer a Ram. Barron would certainly bring the hit with the tackle greatly improving the run defense from a strong safety position now that we have two strong #1 corner type in the secondary;):sneaky:.

In a January 7th post our resident master accountant & bookie @flv posted this comment in a Mark Barron discussion "The 1st $2M will be payable on March 16 2018 so a preliminary decision to keep, cut or trade him should ideally be made before then. The cap ramifications are negligible and shouldn't come into the equation."

Thus the Rams have less than 6 days to make the decision on Mark Barron. :coffee:

Landry will possibly go higher than any of us anticipate. If we do get him, you have to protect him in the running game, at least his first year. He'll simply be a pass-rush specialist till he can grow into the other roles.

I thought after his combine he would too but a lot of people still have him falling to the 2nd round?

1a. Harold Landry
1b. Roquan Smith
3. Rashon Evans
4. LVE
5. Any premiere OL (Nelson, Daniels, Williams, McGlinchy)

Explanations:
  • Smith: Big fan of him from watching college. He
  • Evans: Hopefully he can be the thumper we need to help with run D.
  • LVE: Not as strong but might still be a good fit and starter.
  • Landry: Probably the 2nd best edge prospect and we definitely need help with Quinn and Barwin gone.
  • OL: Also, definitely wouldn't be too upset with a solid OL draft. Sully is old and Whit is too, plus Jamon is a weak link. Can never have too much OL talent.

Lastly, here are some guys I don't want:
  • Edmunds. Seems like gym class hero and a tweener. 19 yo is a bad thing imo.
  • Arden Key. Screams lazy under achiever
  • Ward/Derwin/Minkah: Not bad picks exactly but not in positions of immediate need and seems like we are in win now mode.

Assuming we can't trade out of the 23rd overall spot, my current prioritized list of realistic draft targets are as follows:
  1. DE Marcus Davenport: A raw pass rusher with tremendous physical tools. While he's a work in progress, he's talented enough to contribute for the upcoming season.
  2. ILB Leighton Vander Esch: Would immediately and capably fill our hole in the linebacker corps and likely be a mainstay as an inside linebacker for the next decade or so.
  3. DT Da'Ron Payne: Signing either Suh or Hankins, would significantly lessen the need for a nose tackle in the draft but we can't assume either will be a done deal at the moment.
  4. OT Kolton Miller: There may be other priorities higher on the list to address but having a capable offensive lineman to serve as either Whitworth or Sullivan's understudy and heir apparent is a need that can only be put off for so long. Plus, Jamon Brown is considered a weak link on our current O-line.
  5. TE Dallas Goedert: Drafting another tight end with a high draft pick may trigger a queasy response, but pairing Goedert and Everett together could provide McVay with the TE duo that will allow him to fully unleash his playbook while addressing the production loss from the departure of Watkins from the WR corps. Let's not forget that the Rams actually pursued Eifert in the off-season only to be rebuffed.
Anything can happen in a draft but I don't see any of Tremaine Edmunds, Calvin Ridley, or Vita Vea falling to our current selection slot.
