I don't know anything about actual playing, but I think it's a delay effect that Edge uses on the arpeggio - which effect is missing in this cover. Makes me really appreciate the effect.
Pluck the string once and the note will ring out/repeat multiple times. Think echo, except an echo decreases in volume with each repeat, while the artist can choose for the delay to repeat without any volume decrease. (I think)
