That's true, but in Bettis' last season he just ran with his head down. D lines started just throwing him into the dirt. With that Rams management and coaching staff in place, he wouldn't have been successful staying on here.
Honestly, what coaching staff would just tell you to charge forward with your head down?
The Dickerson trade was the one that gets me the most. It was already tough to give up such a generational talent, especially after the Rams finally had a decent QB in Everett to complement him. What they could have done together is more than they ever did separately. The trade of Dickerson could have been salvaged had the Rams hit on some of those high picks, the way the Cowboys did when they sent Herschel Walker to Minnesota. Instead it was bust after bust after bust. Missing on all of those picks was terrible for the franchise, as it reverberated throughout the 1990's with one bad season after another. I can't think of another trade that set the franchise back as much as this one did.

The trade up for Tavon was terrible. I wanted them to stand pat and pick Demanded Hopkins. After watching lots of game clips I was convinced that he was the better of the two Clemson receivers. They never had to move to get him.
Wasn't it later in that draft that the Vikings offered them three picks for the Rams late first, but they stood pat and picked Ogletree. I thought it was a mistake. Or was a different draft?
haha, i was convinced justin hunter was going to be a stud. just looked so smooth running and catching the ball. too bad he didn't have what it took to be a nfl wr. too skinny i think and his body couldn't handle it.
i'm pretty sure the rams traded down to get ogletree.

He planned on moving him to fullback after the 95 season, and then Bettis was traded. I don’t recall him dogging it during the 95 season

And off he went to Atlanta for 4 wins while the Rams won 7…..
There was one time where he pulled himself out of a game and wouldn't go back in. There was at least another time where he didn't appear to be giving full effort on a pass block.
IMO he wasn't dogging it; but feuding with his head coach was getting to him and he was distracted and unfocused.

Good point Dieterbrock. Sjax was with the Rams 9 years and The Bus only 3. The front office & coach sure gave up on Bettis/allowed the trade when he had so much left in the tank.
Pittsburgh was the perfect landing spot for Bettis. They had a bruising mentality on offense, the powerful back, and that fit his style well.
Look at his stats for 95.
Lowest yardage of his career except for his final year.
Then he goes to Pittsburgh and gets come back player of the year award.
I wasn't in the coaches meetings there or anything but that was the perception by several people around the league.
And to me personally, it didn't look like he was playing very hard compared to his two previous seasons where he won Rookie of the Year, etc.
It probably wasn’t the worst because the rams still did decent but the Goff trade sure cost the Rams a lot and ended up being a poor deal. Just imagine the Rams right now with the ammo we traded for Goff. A few more first round picks (and 2nd/3rd rounders) on this team right now would be pretty awesome.
And before anyone says it— pretty positive the Rams could have gotten Stafford for around the same cost without including Goff in that trade.

I'm just glad the Rams are now in the 2+ Superbowl winners club. Been a fan sine 1968 and remember crying after so many heartbreaking playoff losses usually to the cowgirls or viqueens in the 70's then losing to the whiners in the late 80's in the NFCCG.
The demons have been slayed for me. Now I want more titles just because.

Yeah imagine if Jim Everett had ED the way Montana had Roger Craig back then. We might've given those 9ers a much tougher time.
I still remember the tears (9 years old) after the 1975 NFC Championship Game loss to the Cowboys 37-7 when the Rams finally had Home Field Advantage. Slept like a baby that night though....Woke up every two hours and cried!
