Well, Brockers and Fox are two guys that won't be restructured, although the team can certainly keep Brockers and even pay Fox if they find him the money. Thing is though, Brockers should still have some trade value based on his age, contract and last seasons improved play. The other thing is that the Rams' SJD and Greg Gaines had their best seasons yet in the NFL, and they brought in A'Shawn Robinson last year, ... they also basically serve the same function as Brockers other than that Brock also gets some shared time with Fox at 5T, a position where Fox is the superior player. SJD, Gaines & Robinson carry a combined 2021 CAP hit around $7.5 mil, Brockers alone is almost $10.mil.
Our 26 year old 5T DE (Fox) is about to hit his first real payday, there are about 5 or 6 other DE's at the same age who are all projected to earn between $5.5 mil per, upwards to $10mil per, and Fox has also just come off his most productive year in the NFL.
I understand that Brockers is a fan favorite & team 'leader' and all, but this would just be another evolutionary cycle in how the NFL works. jmo.
I get it. But it could end up being a Saffold situation too. The Rams could have afforded to pay what he got, but felt the young guys could fill his shoes adequately. It didn’t work out so well.
How do you know that Brockers year had little to do with Gaines and SJD’s success and if Fox was the starter would he have been as good or better? Maybe each players success had more to do with keeping the unit together.
I don’t get sentimental about players. I know how it works with the cap. But if it’s not broke don’t fix it is my motto. Unless of course a team is starting a rebuild and moving older players. McVay said they have a Super Bowl roster. So if they know they will lose a part time player in Fox maybe moving Brockers too is not in line with keeping the roster at a high level.
Then as Jourdan said, they really don’t need to make trades to clear cap. They can just do it through contract manipulation. They are only considering trades for the right compensation, what would that compensation be if it’s not a salary dump? A third? Could they replace his value to the team with that? Or would they only get offers of 6th round picks because teams think they want to dump his contract?
I’m sure he’s replaceable but I don’t think they could get the offer to match his value to the team.
I'd be fine with that. Not sure we can do that when we just paid Woody but either way if that's how things go I'm good. I want to see him and Kupp and these other guys win a championship together so I am hopeful.Like I mentioned in another thread I would be surprised to see Woods traded but I wouldn't be surprised to see them convert some of his base salary this year to a bonus to spread it out and reduce his cap a couple million on their quest to get right with the cap.
It’s the ying and yang of NFL finances. The elite and not so elite (QBs with some success but not elite talent) command such ridiculous $$$$ contracts it puts teams and other players in precarious situations.I like to see us invest in players, yet this seems harder and harder.
Here we have Brockers and Woods being mentioned, both of whom signed sizeable contracts.
I would be sorry to see either of them go especially Brockers.
Is this they way it is now - sign a player for a few years then put him up for trade whenever it sees fit?
We seem to be ruthless as of late.
What I don't like is signing players for a season or two, Weddle, Matthews, Suh, etc.,
These guys aren't Rams in my eyes.
I do get emotionally invested in players because they make up the team.
It's a rant, but some guys I hate to see go. Always have.
