Not quite understanding all the positive vibes about Sebastian Joseph Day on this board. Many seem to think he will contend for a starting role at NT.

I’m all for Rams optimism, but... did anyone actually see SJD play last year? I tried to look up stats for him, and I’m not sure he played a single down in 2018.

Yeah, Gaines looks awesome, and a player they really wanted. I’m hoping he shows something. But as for SJD... well, as of now he hasn’t shown much of anything yet. JFM definitely had some splash plays, and even Smart got in a bit. But I don’t recall seeing SJD at all. Would love to see him explode out of nowhere of course, but I’ve seen zero evidence so far.

I wish i had time to go through all the games but i remember him making some good plays on our way to an NFC Championship

I think this is how Snead and Co build Champions - great depth - role players and super stars. I mean Look at the balance in our DB room now, it’s rather insane

I have been repeating D'Marco Farr's comments that SJD has been working out at the Rams training center five days a week in the off season. Farr said he looks big and strong. At this point he has a great chance to take advantage of Suh leaving and taking some of his snaps. Who knows what he can do at this point but, he should be ready to compete for snaps. Add Gaines and things look a little better in the middle. Rams only need these guys to play two downs and short yardage.

Oh I was wanting a NT. Hoping Lawrence would drop in the draft. No such luck but, Gaines looks promising as an early rotational player. Rams get a run defender that could be a good pressure NT. Great reports from the Senior Bowl shows he has a good upside potential. Should interesting to see him compete early on. Rams liked him a lot so I expect he gets some good snaps.

I like it , depth at DL was a big concern. Not a fast guy , but he should help with run stop and keeping guys fresh.

I like to see how wade uses these guys with Suh gone .

He will be more productive than regular season Suh. Not that that's saying much. Hopefully he's ready for a long season.

As much as I like the Gaines pick-up, I don't think it's enough. The Rams lost Suh, Westbrooks & Easley, and Tanzel Smart has done very little in his two years here. Morgan Fox is returning from injury, but what will his role be in 2019 ? Brockers was less effective in 2018 than expected, and this season he'll likely again be expected to rotate both inside and out while trying to get both Franklin-Myers & Sebastian Joseph situated and up to speed for their new responsibilities. Gaines will get his snaps eventually and join the interior rotation, but he is a rookie and his timetable might be questionable for an early roll-out. If all goes well, maybe we will be fine, but that's a lot of pressure on the three relatively new guys. My concern is not only how the young depth holds up, but what happens in the event of injury ? Donald can't really be replaced, and we have very little behind our other starters in the way of quality depth.
Honestly, I'd be trying to get Muhammad Wilkerson in the building right now, he should be pretty cheap coming off his injury, and he'd be an excellent scheme fit imo.

Gains replaces Suh's snaps and Joseph, Smart and and increased workload from JFM will easily cover whatever Gaines doesn't do and the 250 snaps that Westbrooks and Easley combined for.

I understand the plan, but we have a coach who doesn't necessarily throw rookies out to the lions quite so quickly. And what has Tanzel Smart shown you that creates such confidence in his abilities ? Do we know for certain he even makes the final cut ? We are coming off a Super Bowl, both our offensive and defensive lines are now stacked with players with little to no experience, and we are very thin should someone go down. Adding a short term veteran like Wilkerson could get us over the inexperience hump and give our defense the needed push expected of a play-off contender, he makes us better right now, not toward the end of the season when hopefully guys are starting to jell. He's also preventative medicine in case of a DL injury, that and he's a better player than Brockers imo.

Where does the money come from? The Rams can push a little money forward - but not that much, and it just creates issues in 2020, just like pushing money from 2018 to 2019 made the Rams' cap space a bigger issue now.

Won't affect 2020 if it's a one year 'show me' contract for 2019. The Troy Hill & Blake Countess contracts jump to mind immediately, combined that's over $4.mil Add in a renegotiated contract or two, shouldn't be all that hard to come up with. jmo.

Cant wait to see GG after a full offseason and a little influence from AD. The DL is looking better and his not being twitchy quick will help him to be in position to stop the run as opposed to Suh who at times seemed to be trying to race AD to the QB and totally ignoring the run. AD is the only freelancer our DL needs, the other 2 need to be in position to stop the ball carrier when AD redirects the ball carrier.
Not twitchy quick enough to get out of position and fail to stop the run.... an important new skill set for the Rams d-line.

Joseph-Day didn't play last year really..neither did Kiser...or Allen...and not much from Noteboom…. and those last 3 guys are in line to start, and Joseph-Day looks to be in line to compete for time..

the "positive vibes" comes from the fact that we have a coaching staff that is developing talent and getting guys into the starting line up pretty consistently.... Cooper Kupp…..Corey Littleton....John Johnson... our coaches are getting guys ready to play..and start and they're coming through....

If our coaches say these guys are ready to go...if they are expressing the same type of positive evaluations of guys like Joseph-Day or Travin Howard that they did for previous players who they developed into starters... I'm going to keep rolling with our coaches and front office evaluations of these guys until they stop producing solid players....

this front office and a staff is honestly on a roll

I'm sure the Rams did too. The draft just takes on a life of its own and you gotta be ready with a long list of guys who fit in each round range. I don't doubt they lost multiple guys they really coveted before they were up.

But sometimes things also end up being better than you plan too. Gaines is known as a guy who goes full tilt all the time even in practice... So I really hope the Rams' interior OL is ready because that dude next to Donald is going to be fun to watch in camp.

Agree, and I think Westbrooks and Easley's best days are behind them. West seemed more invisible last year than previous years (best game was his fumble return vs Bucs in 2016) and Easley's injuries caught up to him. Time for some fresh new blood in the defensive trenches. I kinda like Fox, hopefully he got his injured season out of the way for good.

What you have to understand here is that you're just talking about base defense. Rank our best defensive players:

Donald
Brockers
Littleton
Fowler
Matthews
Ebukam
Talib
Peters
NRC
JJ
Weddle

That's 11 players - most above average.

JFM
Christian

Both played snaps last year

Rapp
Long
Gaines

Rookies who will contribute

SJD
Smart
Fox

DL depth only on early downs

When you look at it like this, our D is LOADED. Fowler, Matthews and Ebukam should be viewed as DL for sub packages and it completely changes the Outlook.
