That one surprises me. Stout run stopper at NT but doesn't provide a lot of juice as a pass rusher.

That's what we need tho. We had no one on the roster to eat up double teams. Which is why our LBs were constantly blown up with run heavy teams. Needed to make this move, plus the kid can downright play. He'll be a day one starter on running downs. IMO

My thought:
Would you rather have an average athlete with a super high motor, or a superior athlete (Suh) that gives almost NO effort?
Yes, Suh did step it up in the playoffs, and I appreciate that. Still, I think he was dogging it during the season.
At least this is a guy with some ability and desire that we can root for. (y)

There’s a lot to like here. Big thick guy clogging up the middle with attitude.

With that beard, he’s like a hair ball clogging the drain.

Greg Gaines NFL Draft 2019: Scouting Report for Los Angeles Rams' Pick

STRENGTHS

—Short, stocky run-stopper with excellent power and awareness at the point of attack.
—Can split and handle double-teams or combination blocks thanks to his low center of gravity and lower-body strength. Holds up well against a center-guard combination and will anchor very well in the running game.
—Active tackler who does a good job of finding the ball and working his way into the path of the ball-carrier.
—His bull rush is powerful and tough to stop; once Gaines gets a head of steam going, he can run through blockers and will move the line of scrimmage.
—What you see is what you get given his maxed-out frame (6'1", 312 lbs), but he has rookie-year contributor tools.
WEAKNESSES

—His average arm length (31¼") limits his hand usage when a blocker does get into his frame because he's lined up directly over the center and not in a gap.
—A nonexistent speed rush has Gaines projected mostly as a run defender only; he doesn't have the speed or twitchy moves to beat interior linemen with quickness off the snap.
—Stiff hips and short legs make his lateral agility tough to watch. He's a straight-line player only.
—Poor overall athleticism limits what he'll be able to do at the next level.

OVERALL
Greg Gaines is your ideal stocky 3-4 nose tackle who won't flash with exceptional athletic traits, but he's tough at the point of attack and is hard to move off his spot. His ability to play early in his career adds value to his profile, even if he's mostly seen as a two-down player.

GRADE: 5.90 (ROUND 3-4 — FUTURE STARTER)

PRO COMPARISON: Beau Allen

Los Angeles Rams trade up, select Washington Huskies NT Greg Gaines

The Rams continue to address the defense by adding the beefy Greg Gaines from Washington!

After a trade up, with the 134th-overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the Los Angeles Rams select NT Greg Gaines from the Washington Huskies.

The Rams acquired the 134th-overall pick by way of the New England Patriots in a trade just now. Here’s the parameters of the trade:

The #Rams get from the #Patriots picks 134 and 243 in exchange for picks 162 and 167. They are now on the clock

— Vincent Bonsignore (@VinnyBonsignore) April 27, 2019
Gaines is a 6’1” and 312 lb nose tackle prospect with a good motor and the ability to stack offensive lineman at the line of scrimmage. Gaines obviously doesn’t add a whole ton of juice as a pass rusher, but the need was certainly there since the upcoming departure of NT Ndamukong Suh. Gaines figures to join to rotation on the defensive line. He’s also the second selection from Washington after the Rams selected his teammate, Taylor Rapp.

Gaines was #229 on Mocking the Draft’s Dan Kadar’s rankings of the best players available after Round 3.

Cant wait to see GG after a full offseason and a little influence from AD. The DL is looking better and his not being twitchy quick will help him to be in position to stop the run as opposed to Suh who at times seemed to be trying to race AD to the QB and totally ignoring the run. AD is the only freelancer our DL needs, the other 2 need to be in position to stop the ball carrier when AD redirects the ball carrier.

Wade has resisted those type of players in the past.
