Looks like a solid pick at 104.

Fits a need possibly.

I know very little about the future.

I remember when we picked John Johnson, a lot of us, including myself, weren't so sure about that pick. Burgess has a lot in common with John. John is a bit bigger, but Burgess is a better athlete. Both have legitimate man cover skills and are versatile safeties. Burgess can play split or single high (although, he's only competent as a single high), he can play in the box, or he can cover the slot. He's a useful piece as a third safety.

So much depends on understanding offensive concepts and assignments. We often get caught up with physical traits rather Xs and Os. He is a heady player with a low floor, who has a chance to play this season. There were other players I preferred but he was ranked in the top 100 players on all the site boards I respect

I’m so glad that we got a good safety who can cover slot receivers, cover downfield and support the run!

The play at the 2 min mark. That's the kind of thing Staley will ask of his safeties. This guy is a fantastic fit.

Now go hydrate Scott!

Nice, like that break down. Looks like he's got the instinct that is needed in the NFL. But damn, Scott Mitchell gonna keel over if they don't get him a chair. Actually never mind, was always a big Barry Sanders fan and Scott did him no favors so make him stand.

I loved this pick. A big need and really a great player. I'm glad they didn't reach on a OLineman that might not make the team.

Great breakdown! Thanks for posting. I hope someone got Scott some sideline oxygen once the clip was over.

For purposes of comparison look at us drafting Joyner way back when. As a guy who was limited in measurables Rams took him in round 2 on the strength of his slot ability. This dude they got round 3 and he's got an ability to play different roles (slot, single high, two deep, etc) not to mention the measurables are night and day.

I'm a big fan of Van Jefferson in this offense but tbh this is probably the best pick of our draft.
