Man I hope he takes a big step this year. If he does this passing offensive can be explosive. But the pick still makes me scratch my head years later.

Agree - the thing that was so SHOCKING was DJ1 was a veteran WR who was a little bit of a DIVA.
He was going to be a good Ram & mentor,but not at the expense of chAsing him out of LA.
When you draft a player to take your spot it changes things a lot from a physc standpoint.If it happens naturally it’s different.
The NUMBER 2(2nd rd) & first pick in the draft is EYE OPENING,because you need to play him & it takes those SNAPS away from a Player like DJ1 who had a 1 YEAR contract.
—Another words DJ1 is playing for a contract for another team in 2022 ? He knows that for sure after The 2021 Draft.

Gotta remember the circumstances. McVay wanted a new Desean Jackson. Rams had Eskridge on their radar. Right after being picked by the Shecocks they may have panicked a bit to pick up their next deep threat in Tutu. Could he have been picked up later? Perhaps. But McVay wasn’t willing to chance it.

To run slants successfully, you typically have to have some physicality to you. DBs can often reroute you in the 5 yards you're running or meet you at the catch point. However, some limited success could come with DBs who are playing off on him.
I would expect him to have some more success on crossers where his speed can leave man corners in the dust (less success running through zones though without the shiftiness or agility to cut on a dime and exploit the hole right away).
Yeah he's got a small catch radius which matters across the middle too. And safeties or backers would potentially kill his little ass on a slant if it's not perfectly timed or placed.
He's a perimeter guy and an option you attack space with. I'm sure he's fine on crossers too of course but you gotta be careful as a QB to not get him killed. Can't have any defenders ahead of him when you throw that ball.
I like him as a Z in this offense. Get him free releases with some motion or formation or off pre-snap movement and if defenses ignore him get him the ball. Hit him deep on go routes and posts. There's a lot he can do to keep defenses on their toes if he's ready to go this year. He's had plenty of time in this offense now, so he should be entering that window where he's expert level in his understanding and I have to assume we feel that at least a little bit.
Aside from crossers and go routes, I don't see why Atwell can't be used in outs, post-corners, etc. Use the sideline so there are no DBs in "collision position". It limits the route tree the secondary must worry about, but it still has to think deep first with Tutu and that should make a timed "out" pretty open.

Tutu has such a slight frame... I'm sure they're nervous about him running slants.
If you look at Xavier Smiths highlight tape from Florida A&M, they used him in a lot of ways that we could use Tutu if his frame could take it.
I heae what Steve Smith says about Xavier Smith and it just seems his potential upside is higher than Tutu's

first play they showed was a slant. tutu will eat them up if he has space.
the rams don't have some green qb that will get a player killed. they have a seasoned pro's pro. stafford won't pass the ball to him if there's a guy ready to cut tutu in half close by.

I see maybe 500 yards receiving with 100 yards rushing if he stays healthy which would be considered a breakout year for him. Now do I think that happens...no. I doubt he'll ever be worth his draft slot. Way to small.
Xavier had 10-15 pounds on Tutu currently but I agree that if Tutu's in space, he could be dangerous. I'm pulling for Tutu... buy unless his return skills have improved... I think he may be on the hot seat... both Xavier Smith and Sam James are in camp and if they're better return guys than Tutu... Tutu becomes expendable IMO
The big issue is the draft came AFTER we signed DJax. So Tutu was selected with DJax on the roster, that's a big part of why it never sat well and seemed like a reach.
Whatever though, at this point we just need to keep our fingers crossed and pray.
All joking aside, the kid does have some talent with his speed, route running and hands. We have seen flashes. And now he has several years in the system so could “break out” like many WRs do in year 3.
But by break out I don’t mean 1st team all pro. I mean he can become an impact player for us.The end arounds, bubble screens, go routes and deep outs like Cooks used to run. Especially if our Oline comes together to create a running game and PA off that run game much like the 17-18 seasons.
He will get every opportunity to shine considering Mcvay doesn’t want to admit the pick was a complete fail.

I overall agree but I think McVay is TOTALLY willing to give up on any player, any time and will eat the mistake and move on...

Atwell can do what he was drafted for, a fast deep threat with good hands, like most members of ROD, it isn't that he was drafted, but that he was drafted in the 2nd, but just maybe McVay had info that Atwell would be drafted before our next pick. Trust in Sean M.

In some cases I think he believes in players too long. Wolford, Evans, Demby, Noteboom, Blythe, Rapp, Long jr., Mannion. And one Old but not yet dead guys favorite Havenstein
