I agree with your asemsment about neither action being 100% guaranteed victory but what about the injury risk putting the defense back on the field? Stopping short of the goal line is the smarter move

Listening to the presser... McVay had told the guys to get down after getting the first down. So Gurley man was following orders.

I think your point is valid.. but I think in that situation the person with the greatest chance of getting injured might be the gimpy Aaron Rodgers.

Understood but how would you feel if Gurley scores a meaningless touchdown and Donald comes up lame trying to get to Rodgers and ice the game on a play that never needed to happen?

not with peters and hill getting their ankles broken when there was no need to.

.

Winning comes first--personal stats-come second. Sean, Goff, and Gurley all did the right thing. That's why the Rams are now 8-0 and are looking down at everyone else in their division and conference

Game over no reason to score @NJRamsFan is right on point, no injuries in victory formation. Plus you even add to more of the frustration for Rodgers. And BTW, what if Gurley scores and the Rams miss the extra point, but I don't need to go into detail, Gurley did the right thing and that's all that matters.

You play to win the game!

I was 50/50. I wanted him to score because IMO we actually outplayed the Packers and should have won by more. One of the Packers TD drives, on 3rd and 9 JFM got his hand on Rodgers but couldn't bring him down - after that, big play to Adams. That and obviously the insane defensive holding the Packers did all day without it being called - I'm not too upset about it because the refs didn't call anything, but I'd sure have felt better if they showed replays of our DBs holding all game long too and getting away with it.

I get going down - because if he scores there and then they block and return the extra point, they're down 6 AND getting the ball with plenty of time.

But I think the odds of them blocking it are about the same as us fumbling the snap, and if it's a similar "risk", then why not take the one that puts you up 8 or 6 versus up 2?

Also, McVay preaches the always aggressive approach and it would have been cool for Gurley to keep his pace of breaking the record for TDs.

But I totally get just going down - I just wanted to win by more points.

So we had to try NOT to score?

Okay, I'm going to declare this game a ass busting.
Really just a statistical thing. If Gurley runs it in, and Zuerlein misses the XP (rare, but it happens), then it's an 8 point game with the ball going back to Rodgers. McVay had the math all worked out on the drive. All he wanted to do was get a 1st down and kneel 3 times.

I bet there's a lot of people ticked off because it would have covered the spread.

That's why I don't gamble. :D

Yeah, I'm one of them. I took a bath on that play/game, but as long as the Rams win...it's hard to get too upset. 8-0 is nothing to whine about, right?

The argument that it could avoid injury holds more water to me than the it sealed the game. Game was sealed either way.

It was more of a symbolic gesture as well.

Agreed. We all would've been furious at Gurley if he scores and someone like Donald got injured on Greenbays next possession. Just go down, take a knee, end of game.

I agree that he did the right thing. The kneel down is effectively 100% game. I know a fumble is likely, but its like 99.99% chance we win it. Remember, it was Aaron Rodgers we were keeping off the field. I kept explaining that to my wife, saying "If anyone can still take this game from us its that guy". Also, long hard fought game, lets just end it with out anymore effort, or risking any further injuries.

Finally, its a football game and that was the game plan on the drive, McVay probably made the call at the beginning of the drive to just get the first down. He wasn't running statistical analysis every play, that is ridiculous. So after the game, you can assemble all the statistics and say "Well Gurley should have just scored", remember that McVay & Gurley made the decision IN GAME with the idea that it is best not to give Rodgers a chance to win the game at the end.

Full disclosure, my opponent had Gurley on his fantasy team so I'm biased lol
