it would maybe be the best running back 'one two punch' tandem in history.
I can’t think of a single franchise with a greater history of running backs than the Rams, although I will freely admit that I don’t know as much about other teams’ history.

So many good ones. I remember Jerome Bettis in his rookie season and second season. Just blasting over defenders. Reminded me of the Tyler Rose.

Steven Jackson.

He amassed the most rushing yards in Rams history...with mostly a shit offensive line, and - aside from Torry and the last two years of Isaac - shit receivers. The only time he came close to what he could really do was 2006, and he led the NFL in yards from scrimmage easily and got ninety catches and a bunch of touchdowns.

It’s tough to take anyone over Faulk, but “The Glide” was special.

I have to admit that I wasn't that impressed by ED at the time, because I liked bruising RB's like Earl Campbell. I thought of him as a finesse runner, although he really wasn't. Dickerson was impressive when he turned on the afterburners and ran by almost everyone. For his era in the 80's, he was the best. Lets not forget the offensive line on those 80's Rams team was one of the very best and opened the holes that he enjoyed.
Having said that, I think Marshall Faulk was the most complete weapon this team has ever known. I've enjoyed watching Cullen Bryant, Lawrence McCutcheon, Charles White, Eric Dickerson, Jerome Bettis, Marshall Faulk, SJAX and Todd Gurley. (I never enjoyed Wendell Tyler!). All of these were mostly "Bell Cow RB's," which isn't the style of back the NFL requires anymore. Although Marshall was in a different era, he transcended that. He knew every aspect of the offense as good or better than the QB. He ran precise routes and many experts said that he could easily have been a #1 WR on most teams. He made DB's miss whether he was rushing or receiving the ball and could take it to the house whenever he broke free. Some might disagree with me, but I think he was the most significant player in GSOT. Marshall too had Orlando Pace and a very good Oline (Timmerman and McCollum) that opened holes for him.

Gurley and Jackson were disappointing because their potential was diminished by injuries and sucky teams. For a couple of years, no RB was as exciting to watch as Todd Gurley. SJAX had the worst Oline around him and still rushed for a lot of yards, like a warrior.

1. Marshall Faulk
2. Eric Dickerson
3. SJAX
4. Lawrence McCutcheon
5. Todd Gurley

I voted Faulk.

Check out the running stats... ED with 51 fumbles in only 65 games, didn't realize he had that many. SJAX with half that many fumbles in twice as many games!

Here are the full stats:

This is so subjective. It’s difficult to compare between eras with various schemes, trends and emphasis on different parts of the game. Defenses faced in the 70’s and 80’s are different from defenses faced in the last 10-20 years.

Then you have the quality of the team that the RB played on, plus the scheme they ran, that can effect success or failure.

I chose Faulk because of his knowledge, versatility, leadership and skill. Maybe I should have said Dickerson simply because defenses knew he’d be getting the ball on most plays and still couldn’t stop him.

However, what could Steven Jackson have accomplished with that Rams offensive line from the mid 80’s? He would have been incredible.

Gurley is always in consideration but the short span of his career influences the perspective.

It’s not an easy decision.

Thanks for the video, I’m glad you posted it. Scooter went on to do color commentary with Bob Starr on radio for the Rams. BTW his high school stats at Vallejo high were insane. Something like 2 touchdowns average per 12 minute quarter over 16 games when underclassmen didn’t play. Drafted number 2 overall after leading the nation in rushing at what would become UOP, then College of the Pacific.
When I Get home today I want to watch it more in depth. Is Scooter Dick Bass? That's crazy how Universities that aren't anything now for NFL players produced so many good ones back in the 40's, 50's and 60's. 2 Touchdowns per 12 minute quarter? WTF? That is insane! THe population was smaller and less people to choose from, not that high of competition? Was he just that much better than everybody else?

It's OK. I'm to blame here ... not you.

It's an Old Guy Thing. We don't want to be forgotten; and, by extension, we don't want the things and people that were important to us in our youth to be forgotten.

Now ...

Don't apologize at all! One of the things I loved/miss when Davefan was here (outside of his never ending optimism) is he would go over things that happened in the past, the team, player, coaches, games, ownership situations. Things you just don't get from google or wiki and some things that are more accurate than those two sources.

I consider Ram history things I should know and it's fun to learn as well... otherwise I'm just a Seahawk fan circa 2011.

And Tyler probably had the most fumbles per carry, swinging the the ball in traffic like he did! My gut still clenches when remembering him carry the ball!
Cleveland Gary? More fumbles per carry? Remember him?

Please, its DICKERSON !
1st season, rookie rushing record, still stands today. 2nd season all time single season rushing record, still stands today.
If he had stayed a RAM (FUCK GEORGIA) with the Zampeze offense, Jim E, Ellard, Flipper where they could not key on him he would have had more yards per rush. And more total yards.
He set the record with Jeff Fucking Kemp handing him the ball. I think all that happened with Vince Ferragamo still on the roster ? Why ?
You think with Kemp handing him the ball every single person on earth did not know he was getting the ball ?
Yeah, I know.... Faulk. Best all around football player I have ever seen when healthy. But the Rams did not draft him and he did not stay healthy long enough for us.
Best pure runner ever was ED. And no Barry Sanders was not better. Too many carries for loss.
Maybe Bo Jackson was a better, but he was the best athlete ever too.

Sort of....But I remember Tyler doing it on great Rams teams that never quite reached its potential. The long runs that ended in a strip fumble tore me up so much, I could barely watch him play.

I voted for Faulk only because we got a Super Bowl with him. And if Martz wasn't so stubborn with the passing game, we would have won a second with Marshall.

Eric Dickerson was the best running back.

Stephen Jackson was the most bruising back.
