Hahaha, Fergy wasn't a good blocker in college nor was he particularly good when he got here but I was incredibly surprised how his blocking improved over the course of just one season.

Fergy has some issues with contested catches still - he needs to be aggressive at attack that ball! - but he's shown me a really good runway to great TE play in a year or two.

If we ran a bunch of 11 personnel last year or 12 and Fergy was our number 1 TE cause we had no one else we'd still have our gripes on his play but the amount of passes going his way would make us think he was a budding star.

There's no guarantee he becomes a swiss army knife high end third option in a top passing attack but it's a possibility already with what he showed but neither is he a middling talent who won't give us much going forward.

From looking at him play and his improvement in some areas already I can see what McVay said at the end of the year, now it's on him to put that work in.

And for gods sake, ATTACK THE BALL!

Then there’s Gunnar Helm who I liked and talked about. Was productive on a bad team. Has everything Fergs has. 4th rd to TEN

Arroyo I liked. Not a blocker but can catch and run. Does EVERYONE we draft have to be a good blocker ??
I mean, I get it but IMO it’s cost us in terms of speed, athleticism all over the offense.
Yes. It seems in McVay's system everyone must be a good blocker.

I do agree, though, that that may mean they pass on some explosive, athletic players. But Ferg wouldn't be the player that we drive that point home on. He's much more athletic than Helm and arguably Arroyo (who I also really liked).

You don’t have to sell me on Stowers. Did you know he’s a converted QB?

Supposedly a high football IQ. Kuppish
Yeah and I think one thing people miss with these guys is that the ones who have shown themselves to be able of carrying the offensive chainmoving role at the lower level are an entirely different breed from the ones who turn screens into big plays.

I really don't know why Stowers isn't considered TE1. Nothing against Sadiq but he is not even remotely in his class in terms of being ready to step into an offense like ours. And many teams run some variation of WCO now.

I cannot agree with you there my friend. Go look at Helm’s stuff last year.
That's the problem. You're using production to judge athleticism. You can be the most athletic player in the world and still be unproductive.

Athleticism can objectively be measured.

I thought I read somewhere that Stowers is really poor/bad at blocking. If so, doubtful he’d be considered by rams regardless of Ferguson.

It’s curious people compare Ferguson to Higbee and THs production. Maybe forgetting Tyler’s earlier years. He only had 11 catches (85 yards) his rookie year. Didn’t go over 25/295 until his 4th year in the league (yr 3 with McVay).

Im definitely not. Im watching football players move on the field, same as you.

I realize that Helm was the guy as a rookie and Fergs wasn’t in terms of afforded production.

You said Fergs is much more athletic than Helm and arguably Arroyo. I see Helm and Fergs(athletically) very comparable.

Bottom line for me is I’d have rather drafted Helm in the 4th over Fergs in the 2nd.

I just don’t see all this high ceiling others see in Fergs. Especially in terms of being this athletic, go get the ball, dangerous weapon in the passing game who can consistently win one on one. Helm doesn’t have that kind of ceiling either. That’s my point. They’re both dirt worker TE’s who have some decent hands.

Totally fair. Though I feel like we have a guy like Helms on the team in Allen.

Hard for me to confuse Helm's and Fergy's athleticism when I just look at speed in general but because Fergy is a long strider I don't think it looks like he's moving that fast.

I think we can both agree though that we hope Fergy develops further and into a more down in and down out weapon.

6’4” with a 45” vert and good hands. His red zone potential is off the charts. When I first watched his stuff I didn’t realize he was that tall because of the way he moves. Very little wasted motion for 240 lbs and 6’4”

It’s too bad we don’t have that #29 pick. I liked him in that bottom first-mid second range.

I'll take my chances with the guy we already have and didn't use much. Stowers would be a semi repeat of that, with less blocking ability IMO. Unless we are lining him up in the slot that is.

Ferg still has a chance to be something in this offense. He was open for what would have been some key plays for us in that final stretch of games but either didn't get the ball or when he did get it things worked against him. What I still like about him is he's a sneaky mover, covers more ground than you think and is smooth in his routes for his size. The very best TE weapons tend to show as rooks, and he didn't do that, not like the best ones do. But this dude still could end up being that top TE this franchise has never really had, the one that just logs catches and yards and big moments year after year.
Agree I like what we saw from Ferg but I really loved Fannin. Inspite of people telling g me he ran funny and would never break tackles lol

Lol. You’re kind of right, and I’ve also said before (maybe in our conversations) that to my eye, Fergs looks like a slightly faster, slightly more agile Davis Allen.

I watched Davis friggin Allen highlights a few weeks ago(true story) I challenge any Rams fan to go do that and say with any honesty that Ferguson displays a superior level of anything over Davis Allen. Fergs has better speed. He might have better ball tracking but it’s not obvious.

Then there’s that dog factor. On the field presence, if you will.
Higbee has it. I know some fans don’t give a hoot about those things but they should. It doesn’t take 3 yrs of coaching to see if it’s there. Fergs doesn’t have it. Doesn’t mean he won’t be good but it might mean he’s not an elite competitor. That’s all Im saying.

Well this is where I think fans get colored by the media rankings they see. He's being listed in La Porta range but he's a better athlete than La Porta. The dude is like 95th percentile athletically. He is one of the best testing TEs at the combine period.

Teams aren't gonna say shit about that either. Because some of them want to draft his ass. So let those media types continue sleeping on him and overvaluing Sadiq.

This is not to say some team may not have Sadiq higher. But I am willing to bet most teams have Stowers as TE1 on their boards. The things he has are the most valued things for the position.

If I were in Snead's shoes, and if I felt TE was a need, I would take Stowers at 13 with zero concerns. He has plenty of quality for that range and I think he'll translate quickly as well. Thing is I don't consider TE a need. I want a perimeter threat for Stafford with catch radius and great hands.

I liked Fannin as well. He was that guy who was obviously more than the sum of his parts. There's players like that, whose instincts or quick processing or whatever can make up for the athleticism they lack in meaured events like the 40.

But I think the jury is still out on that class at large. It's been one season and TE is a position many take time to fully show who they are.
