We're still at the mercy of the mob here tbh. And I've made enough predictions that are going to be incorrect to date lol, not to mention it's gonna be tough to watch so many of these guys go off the board. So I basically have a "short list" right now of the guys I think are impact players for us or otherwise bring what we need.
Also I think the Rams are determined and very conscious of getting the most bang for their buck overall. Which is obvious, yes, but that might well affect how they prioritize positions given the relative depth in round 3 & 4.
Merlin's short list for 52 & 57 (in order of need as I see it)
LT: Jones > Cleveland > Niang. I felt Jackson might be only a RT and he's gone already so wtf do I know. Jones is the guy for me though. He is the only one I'd move up for. Niang has a higher chance to end up a RT so is probably a guy you can move down for if you target him. I will say once again that I like Bartch and his projected inside/out flexibility but we specifically need a LT here IF we're gonna do this. Otherwise just wait until next year as we have RT types in spades.
OLB: Baun > Uche > Okwara (Okwara taken over either of the others would be a desire for more rush upside IMO). Rams might like their in-house guys more than we do, we'll see. But I think we gotta get an edge here or round 3 (OLB looks great into round 3 btw). Also I think productivity-wise some of the next tier types like Anae could be just as good, but if the Rams prefer one of them will they move down or just take them? I wouldn't play around tbh because teams seem to have a lot of different looking boards.
C: Hennessey > Cushenberry. Cushenberry is not an ideal fit for the zone scheme but man he is tough and would mean no more DTs on Goff's toes in the pocket. He also could play OG for us depth or competition-wise so I think he's in play. But Hennessey is my guy and if he's not there I'd put Center on the shelf until round 3. Not gonna list OGs because our OG depth looks pretty good, but Hunt would be that type of guy who the Rams say "F it" and take because he plugs in almost immediately at a guard spot (which frees Edwards and thus makes Hav even more expendable).
ILB: Harrison. This group demonstrates how guys who have the speed and athleticism on top of the desired ILB skills get snapped up so fucking quick. I had hoped teams would sort of overlook an option but instead the expected 3 went off the board and then Sheattle reached for Brooks (who should have been in play for us). So it's fuckin ugly here and round 3 looks better. Harrison is kind of stiff but he's physical and fits what we need to build a plus run stuffing defense. Rams might trade down if they are targeting him but again that's risky as F this year.
WR: Higgins > Mims > Peoples-Jones. I expect some disagreement on this but I think IF the Rams go wideout round 2 it will be a guy who can play outside the hashes, good blocking in the run game, and add some length to the group. Something is up with Higgins IMO, the teams for whatever reason must have something they don't like off field if he gets to us because he's a round 1 talent. Mims is a guy I think will be a top wideout in this league I have zero doubt about it. Peoples is the guy I'm afraid the Rams will take and if they do it's an upside pick. Notable missing names here are Hamler (shrimpy fuck who will need to play slot) and Shenault (injury concerns and I think he's more concerned with his hair extensions than getting dirty on the field). Which means the Rams will take one of them so you're welcome loooool.
RB: Dobbins > Swift > Taylor. I think Taylor is the best back on the board but yes he's got mileage and is not an ideal fit for the Rams like the other two. Had a feeling this shit would happen too btw. Because I like the power backs who will be available until later but if the quality here is this good it's hard to pass on it.
S: McKinney > Delpit > Winfield > Chinn. The safety group is untouched which is nuts, but it's an undervalued group compared to the others so not a big surprise in this loaded draft. Talent on the board right now is outstanding and probably right there with RB which means teams are gonna hit it hard tonight. What is interesting here too is Staley. Fangio likes to keep his safeties deep and helping over the top. What does he think of JJ and Rapp in their roles? Do the Rams plan to let JJ walk in FA? Lot of moving parts AND they need a sub safety to replace Christian. People don't get excited about safeties but there's some serious talent here right now. Most interesting of all is the upside too with Chinn. IMO he could impact our sub packages immediately with size/length/speeeeed and transition into bigger things when JJ leaves. Oh and the SS types run strong in this class btw so trade downs look good here as well.
Some notes & thoughts...
* CB wasn't a very deep group on the impact side and is already looking picked over, teams got their guys early.
* Trade down looks extremely likely for the Rams. Not just because Snead loves doing it, but because Edge, Center, RB, and S all look good into the next round and we'd get another pick.
* I think the Rams prioritize WR if it's there. Just a feeling I suppose. I don't think they're happy with their top 3 wideouts with Cooks gone and IMO Woody might be huffy about his contract behind the scenes. Also I like the WR we might get a shot at far more than the guys in the next round, so more dropoff than some of these other positions even though the group overall is deeper.
* It almost seems like a move-up with the pick at 52 would be in play with a commensurate drop with the pick at 57. That would allow the Rams to get the guy WR they want and then recoup the draft value with the move down from 57.
