They were protecting championship games. I'd have been fine with Bama being left out, but Notre Dame has no leg to stand on here. It lost to Miami and TAMU to start the year. Yes, it tore through its schedule after that, but it also played a pretty underwhelming schedule outside of those games. While I'd have put ND in over Miami, I understand why the committee chose the team that won the H2H.
