DRAFT Where do you stand on QB Ty Simpson?

QBs who go high in the draft often start right away. The sheer value of the higher picks drives that, as does the poor quality of teams who typically select high.

Poor teams picking him doesn't change how most people feel he should be treated and coached and I don't let that influence my opinion of the player he is. If he is forced to start early on a bad team then he is very very unlikely to succeed and people like you will pat yourselves on your back because a bad team ruined a player with the potential to be good.

The funny thing about all of this is I don't really think the Rams draft him at 13 nor do I push for them to do so. But I see a guy who had some very good games before the OLine fell apart, the run game completely disappeared and his main WR went MIA. No QB those last few games would have done more than him.

Warner has at least 2" on Simpson and looks to me to have a bigger frame, but who knows. I think Simpson could be OK if he's lucky enough to be drafted by a well run team, ie the Rams.

If Kyler Murray and Bryce Young can be FIRST OVERALL picks at SIGNIFICANTLY SMALLER heights than Simpson, why is his height an issue? Okay, Kyler had the scrambling ability, but Bryce really doesn't.

OK, so how do we know Simpson's listed measurables are accurate? Those things are perpetually inflated in the NFL... particularly pre draft.

Ponder was drafted because his class of quarterbacks was shit and teams were willing to gamble on getting that one "franchise quarterback" to help their franchise. It was the same with Locker, Gabbert, and McCarthy.

Simpson is the same: a quarterback who - in an actually good draft - would be in the second round. Maybe a high-second, but still a second-round quarterback. But with this draft being extremely weak with very few blue-chip prospects, he will go in the top ten, either to a team that selects him or a team that trades up to get him.

Its ridiculous because Ponder was a mediocre 3 year starter that everyone knew was a ridiculous overdraft. Making such an inaccurate comparison is just a blatant insult to the player. Which is fine, but just call it like it is. Why not call him Ryan Leaf while we're at it?
Simpson is a unicorn and the question mark is his lack of playing time. There's not a lot of comparable players, most of the single season starters were guys who left school early, Simpson was at Bama a full 4 seasons.
So yeah, its ridiculous

I think Simpson is a better prospect than he's given credit for being. If the Rams take him in Round 1, I'm good with it. But he needs to land in the right system.

I'm not sold on Simpson. Or anyone not name Mendoza. It was supposed to be a good QB draft before the season. Then guys like Allar, Nussmeir, Sellers, etc. did not have the year they were expected to have. My guess is a quarterback needy team will draft him. Probably in the first.

The Rams are all in. They want a guy that can make an immediate impact. A few wide receivers could fit that bill. Some good corners too. Can't have enough good corners. Even with McDuffie and Watson. What if a guy like Caleb Downs falls to them? They have Curl and Kinchens. Would he be an upgrade?

All in all I have a feeling Rams will trade back. Maybe not out of the first round but to gain a 4th round pick and maybe grab a project at quarterback. Let him sit behind Stafford for hopefully a couple more years.

If we can still somehow get one of our guys by trading back a bit and then trade up from 61 with some of those assets to grab Simpson, it would be a very big win. Still, I would worry about swing tackle but the Rams have shown they can pull a rabbit out of a hat with later OL picks.

I was thinking that they are an obvious trade spot at pick 30, if Simpson is available, for a team who wants to take him with the 5th year option

Then I wondered whether drafting him makes sense because they have Willis who he will sit behind. Are you sold on Willis? If he’s a stop gap then Simpson makes sense

Maybe a team trades 2026 draft capital to get him at 30 but not entirely buying that.

Also, would be pretty serious managerial mismanagement to give Willis a contract and then draft his successor.

I don't think you pay Willis his contract (which is not crazy but middle of the road) if he's just a stop-gap but Miami is a mess so who knows. They've already set Willis up to fail.

It isn't that I don't think he will be a good QB. It is that I don't think he is special in any way, not worth a 1st round pick and a chance to really upgrade other positions on this team for the SB run. If I am weighing between the future and the present, I chose a player more likely to help the team now and look for a QB later. Later the Rams can acquire an equally equipped, used or new model that will probably manage the the offense as well as Simpson and maybe find something special.

Nothing is guaranteed. Just because the Rams came close doesn't mean they are automatically good enough to get to the SB. Even with the coverage improvement. As I have said before, any upgrade to the team now is a move for the future. There are few QBs like Stafford and the likely hood that the Rams replace him with another that will make up for weaknesses and can put the team on his back is slim. So the team around that QB needs to be able to make up for his weaknesses.

I don't think Simpson is a bad QB. I just think he'll be barely average in the NFL. So asking me to get excited about spending a 1st round pick on him doesn't make any sense to me. Now granted, I formed my opinion based mostly what I saw of him in the latter part of the season last year. I am not sure how much the reported illness or play by the rest of his team affected his play. Did the rest of his team get injured or start playing like shit? Or did the opposition get tougher like it often does as the season end grows nearer.

But I am with @Merlin in thinking the guy would be in a tough battle with his back up if he stayed in school. I didn't buy the whole loyalty and "didn't want to tarnish his legacy" BS as to why he didn't stay in school. Didn't make sense then and still doesn't. What fucking "legacy"? He started for one season. A boy raised in Tennessee suddenly becomes completely loyal to Alabama.... RIGHT! He would have had to take maybe a little less NIL money to stay at Alabama IF he got offers from other power 4 programs. Of course he never mentioned who were those other programs making offers.

Any QB we would choose would be going into an ideal situation. He would have time to learn the NFL game behind a pro's pro while getting NFL coaching from a stellar staff and time with Justin Lovett and Reggie to build his physique to be ready to take over.

I'd rather the Rams take a shot at a QB later in the draft that has tools that can be honed instead of taking a QB that most people hold their nose when they say he's a first rounder.

If they take Simpson, I'll hope for the best. But I just don't see them taking him even if he fell to their 2nd round pick. I just don't see him filling a need that high up in the draft.

Yeah because I am known for victory laps when I'm correct. Rather this is you painting him as a victim in your typical style when you're afraid you'll end up wrong. Preemptive victimization as it were.

But I'll say this... It doesn't matter where he's drafted if he's good enough for this league. Darnold came out too early, worked his ass off to improve, and bounced around until he found a staff who could build a good enough team around him. A team took him too early, though he at least had a couple seasons of starts to go off, plus he was of the requisite size for the position, and an exceptional athlete. He ended up fine because he was tough enough, talented enough, and willing to do the work.

Also it doesn't matter if some team is stupid enough to take him early. He's still not a high first round value as a draft prospect any more than Young was when he went 1 overall. And he may hit in spite of that, in which the team will come out of it fine just like Carolina is beginning to finally come around with Young playing consistent good ball last season. But we're talking where we think he'll slot on big boards, which is guesswork, and it's not fucking outlandish or some asshole move to say the kid is a backup level talent or projected to round 3 in your opinion.

I think Simpson after spending a year with McVay and Stafford would be ahead of the guys coming out in '27
That said, I wouldnt be disappointed if they didnt draft him because they have an opportunity to land a good player
