All kinds of issues surrounding the OL, causing a LOTTA problems--which have pretty much been posted. I would, however, like to emphasize the longer developing routes/plays that were tougher to use, and the overall lack of production from the RB position in those areas pertaining to the OL.
(Gurley's lack of explosiveness also factored in)
...but wait, there's more!
FA production. Signing Weddle was a gamble in that we weren't sure when he would finally hit the wall/run outta gas. As it turned out, his tank emptied almost immediately and he hit the wall like a bug on a windshield. Too bad. Liked the guy.
In the case of Mathews, I was never a big fan BECAUSE of his lack of discipline--instead, always going for the splash play. He still could have worked out had we been leading more often and were able to use him as a designated pass rusher, but he was on the field too much.
The interior DL. Gaines did not impress, especially if couldn't get more PT on a DL that was inconsistent at best. Yeah, I saw the 2 or 3 plays he made. SJD wasn't much better, just enough. I can only remember one time I thought, " he's having a good GAME." I find this to be quite troubling when AD99 is already doing HIS job--occupying 2 blockers. Not eating up those guards and the center does not bode well for the LBs.
And what the he\\ happened to our STs? Dismal year all the way around. GZ is only clutch on ridiculously long kicks? 40-49 yards are the $$ kicks. Under 40, you're expected to make it. Over 50 is no guarantee. Look back on his career as a Ram, excluding 2018, and...I think he's gone. VERY disappointed in Hekker as well. And can we finally cut Thomas? The only thing he's done on a regular basis is cover kicks and the guy is offsides in a critical time in a big game? I thought he was gone when Reynolds was drafted.
Ok, I'm gonna breathe. Thanks for reading.
agree !! The special teams needs a total face lift. Snead got rib of Brown & Jones his first season as a Ram. Then Mcquaide is making big money as a LS. He is fun to watch practice with the LB’s though. Tough smart player.
Hekkar’s last punt of 38 yards was weak.
