Titans Podcast: Full Rams Preview
Getting set for Sunday
By Terry A. Lambert
The
Tennessee Titans are limping down the stretch. The road doesn’t get easier this weekend, it actually ramps up quite a bit as the
Rams come to town. The number one scoring offense in the league will provide a seemingly impossible challenge for a struggling Titans’ offense to keep up.
The Rams’ offense is loaded, starting up front with the offensive line.
Todd Gurley is in the middle of an outstanding season.
Jared Goff has bounced back from a down rookie year, throwing the ball to
Sammy Watkins,
Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp. There’s a lot to worry about here.
We’ll dive into all of that, taking a deeper look at the numbers and specific matchups. As always, we’ll be back on Monday morning with a reaction podcast.

The one thing I would change about the Titans season is the regression of Marcus Mariota
It has been tough to watch!

The SB Nation NFL blogs have a theme we all write about every Wednesday. Today’s theme is “the one thing I would change about my team’s season is...” That is a pretty tough one because there are quite a few things to chose from here. I could pick the play calling, or all of the hamstring injuries, or the outcome of the West Coast trip that the
Titans just wrapped up.
Ultimately, I decided that the one thing I would change about the Titans season is the regression we have seen in Marcus Mariota. It has been a brutal year for him, and it has us all wondering what he will look like going forward- especially if there are no changes to the coaching staff. He needs to be running and up-tempo, spread-type offense. Mike Mularkey wants to run a slow, tight offense. Those two things haven’t gelled this season.
We all thought the Titans had a chance to be a contender heading into this season. The biggest reason we felt that way was because of how well Mariota played last season. Now we are left wondering, even if this team does make the playoffs, if the Mariota-Mularkey marriage will ever be anything better than just above average.
------------
At least he fixed the fumble issue
I that no other player this year has 0 fumbles with that many touches of the ball.
----------
Not as disappointed in MM as i am of Murray
Murray was a huge piece of this offense last year. And if the receivers would not make drops and run the right routes things could be a lot different. Big Ben interception rate just as high just touch down ratio is higher.
Not letting him off the hook for his mistakes but there are a lot of problems with this team.
---------
DeMarco Murray's decline was expected, Marcus Mariota's regression wasn't...
If you look at the numbers that RBs like Murray put up after big years then, more often than not, they show a big decline in the following one. Big years from RBs come with lots of bruising hits, and, to a certain extent, such years also mean being lucky with injuries. Those two factors alone usually catch up to them the following year, and many in that situation don’t even complete 16 games let alone match expectations in them.
I think most Titans fans were of the opinion that Murray’s role would gradually decline and Derrick Henry’s role would gradually increase, anyway. Obviously there have been times this season when Henry’s been given carries that Murray would have been given last year but, given Murray’s relatively poor year, Henry probably should have had even more of them.
Mariota was expected to do great things this year, especially with the addition of WRs Corey Davis and Eric Decker (plus others) to his receiving corps. However, for various reasons – ineffective line play, poor support from the running game, his injuries, Davis’s injury, Decker’s issues, playcalling (such as not running enough play-action), etc – he’s been worse rather than better than he was last year.
Plenty of people would have predicted that Murray wouldn’t be as good, but that Mariota would be better. Many had Mariota down to break into that top tier of QBs who get called "elite". Sadly, because of his poor TD to INT ratio it just hasn’t worked out that way.
Credit where credit is due though, even in a down year Mariota has managed to improve some aspects of his game. He’s gone from being one of the most fumble-prone players in the NFL to not fumbling at all, which is no mean feat.
Lastly, I’ll offer this: if we had lost Murray for the season at any point we would still have had an effective running game, thanks to Henry and others, but if we had lost Mariota for the season then you can bet your bottom dollar that we would have missed him ten times as much. We saw how bad our offense was without him for a game or so, I just don’t want to imagine how bad things would have been had he been out for longer than that.
-----------
It’s not that he needs to be in an up-tempo offense.
He just needs to be in an offense from this decade. The splits that the Wideouts have on a decent amount of plays are baffling.
---------
He looked like a different QB last week. Comfortable, decisive, in charge. It looked like his offense. The indecision, insececurity, and skittishness in the pockets we’ve seen over the past 6-7 weeks was gone. It was great to see and fun to watch. We can run with anyone when he plays like that.
-----------
Jon Robinson obviously is a smart guy and probably has a very good football mind.
If we can see all the issues and nonsense with this offense, Robinson has to be able to see it as well.
When he gets an to see up close how McVay uses Goff and how Mularkey uses Mariota, I think he’s gonna want to bang his head against a well. I think Robinson will seriously start to have doubts, if not already.
