I needed to hear Wade Phillips speak about his defense vs the Saints.

He admitted he left Peters alone on an island vs the Saints best WR.

An absolutely head scratching coaching decision that still baffles me today!

I doubt Wade allows this to ever happen again in a similar late 4th quarter down and distance situation.

It is baffling isn't it. WP is a defensive messiah by all accounts. McVay has done some things that make one scratch their heads as well this season.I have been wondering for a while if they are just keeping the powder dry for the postseason. Sometimes I just think that there is so much more in that bag of tricks that Sean has and he is keeping them for the important games. Same could be said of Wade I suppose.

I look forward to an unveiling when it matters.

We paid the money and there is little behind who can fill his spot. Peters isn't a #1 CB, Talib is that guy..We just have to survive until Talib returns...

Hard to say. I hope you’re right. It’s tough to imagine though. I’m just hoping the defense starts to gel better.

Very thought provoking. Look at Belicheat. He knows when to go full throttle, and when to lose. Hell 8-1 we still got the luxury to do whatever we need to for improvement. We are in a very good place.

Generalizing your quote.... Yes, I think this team still hasn't peaked yet on both sides of the ball.

The offense has had a few peaking games/moments but they've still left some easy points on the field that championship teams don't squander.

Squandering easy points in Playoffs Games have proven to eliminate favored teams just like last season vs the Falcons.

The defense has had a few mini peaks when Talib was on board during the first 3 games, but the first 3 games of an NFL season can be overrated.

This Rams team without Talib and all of it's flaws is still top 4 caliber in the NFL and you don't need to be a Rams fan to believe it..

This team better damn well finish the season peaking and looking like a top 2 team.

13-3 might be good enough but I wouldn't count on it. 14-2 or 15-1 will be a statement.

I have no qualms for those that currently rank the Rams the 4th best team in the NFL behind the Saints, Patriots and Chiefs after 9 games.

I will have some serious issues if the Rams don't look like the 1st or 2nd best team heading into the postseason.

7 more games left before "It's all connected"

I sure hope some of you are right about Talib.

I just do see how any CB is going to vastly improve a suspect run defense (190 yards rushing given up last time at Seattle).

Nor do I understand why we traded a much higher draft pick for Peters, than we did for Talib, if Talib is the clearly superior player.

I hate to be a Debbie downer. I love this team, but how do we know that Talib is a number 1 cb? There really is no such thing as a shutdown number 1 cb anymore. (QBs, coaches and coordinators are too advanced now with their schemes). He only played 2.5 games then got hurt. I think Fowler Jr. is going to help our pass D more than we know. We also have to blitz Littleton and Barron on the inside LB blitz some more. Look at Pittsburgh’s 3-4. They send their LB’s on blitzes quite a bit and don’t leave their corners on an island for too long. The Rams hardly do blitz and expect their back end to hold up and more often than not it does not. We have to get a little more creative to get pressure on the opposing qb. This is something Gregg Williams defense did if our DEs didn’t get home. He probably blitzed too much. A happy medium would be ideal. Yes we got burned some by opposing rushing attacks but you can’t give elite QBs all day to throw. You have to knock them down and make life miserable for them. Wade has been too patient with his scheme to work but it’s not working (except against weaker teams). Maybe disguise some coverages more and switch corners on different receivers so the offense doesn’t know what’s coming every single play. These offensive masterminds like Asshole Face will carve up any defense that’s too predictable. Maybe he has too much pride and doesn’t want to change, but he’s gotta throw in some wrinkles and get more aggressive earlier on in the game. We can’t rely on Talib coming in Week 12 to change this defense drastically. Keeping Peters on the number one WR all game when he’s getting burned all game is foolish and the opposite of creative. Pretty ironic considering McVay and the offense are so creative and so unpredictable from the opening snap until the final snap. We need more aggressive play calling from Wade from the start and not wait until we are in a dogfight in the second half

If Talib is truly recovered from his surgery @Ram77, you will see what a difference he makes in Wade's defense.

They won't shut an awesome Saints team down to 20 points, but they will hold them far less than 45 points.

If he does get the green light to play at Detroit, It will take a couple of games to gauge Talib's health and potential. When this cat is a full go, he's one of the top 7 corners in the NFL.

Florida Ram-I hope that’s the case! Would love to see Talib stabilize our pass D.
But I have my doubts that he is the savior. Look around the league and tell me what single CB in the NFL is shutting down opposing defenses. Alot of the names that were supposed to be shutdowns (Xavier Rhodes, Casey Heyward, Patrick Peterson etc) are struggling. Offenses have the upper hand big time right now. I think the fear of penalties of being too aggressive and knocking QBs down have reduced the number of blitzes and overall aggression around the league but IMO the key is Wade has to get more creative to keep the opposition off balance. Mix up coverages and change corners around all game long and dictate and be aggressive from the start. Get that McVay mindset on the D!

The lack of Blitz packages blows my mind.

If we didn’t have Donald closing out games this defense may be breaking records the wrong way.

If you can’t coach up your corner to play man coverage the way you need, then you must make adjustments, Wade is failing at that.

I was in a bar in NO watching the Detroit v Pats game this year. The bartender was an avid Pats fan and while he was pissed that the Pats lost (I think that put them at 1-2), he said something to the effect that Bellichick will have something in mind in terms of the way they are playing. That he'd seen it before, blah blah blah (I was just revelling in another Pats loss!! (y)) . I didn't think much about it until now apart from another wanker Pats fan mouthing off at how good they were. Maybe, the good coaches do keep thing up their sleeves for whatever reason. The Pats have certainly come good.

One reason Age that’s why Peters demanded the higher pick

Wade's defense depends on corners to stay with their man and to generate pressure with the defensive front without blitzing. But as many of you know (and someone posted stats), the refs are not calling offensive holding. So our defensive front isn't getting as much pressure as they could because the opposing O line just grabs and grabs and it makes it difficult to get sacks and generate pressure.

Wade may have to throw in a blitz here or there to generate more pressure. Might as well send Joyner on more blitzes since he's never there to cover or help the cornerbacks anyway.

When the Rams only rushed 4 - the NO OL double teamed Donald and single teamed the other DL effectively. Donald broke through a couple times for QB hits and had the big tackle for loss on Kamara. With the trouble we had on coverage (especially 3rd down) there was a need for more pressure on the QB. I hope to see more blitzing from ILB and more pressure from EDGE (Fowler looked promising in his debut). I trust in coach Wade but feel strongly he needs to mix it up a bit more to give his defense a chance to have more success.

On another Note: Wade is not to blame for the piss poor tackling from the LBs and DBs - not sure what that was but it was disturbing to watch. It reminded me of Ogletree from last year.

.

deangelo hall talks about peters' woes in this video. bucky brooks chimes in as well. they seem to think wade is trying to push a square block into a round hole. don't be put off by the other two knuckleheads, watch it till the end.

I see three things....
- The scheme puts guys in the right positions but far too often we see LBers in the wrong gap freelancing
- Tackling has been atrocious and the Saints game is a great example, especially the first couple Saints possessions
- Peters is a zone corner that reads and reacts. He fails at man coverage because he’s busy reading like he’s still playing zone

Talib isn't a #1 CB anymore...especially after the injury...no one comes back from an ankle injury ready to go...it is worth than a knee. It will take him some games....as long as he is ready for the Eagles game. That might be the game that gets us homefield (we have to beat a good Bears team in the cold, too).

Talib is a smart man, and he knows how to play almost all WRs, especially some one like Thomas in New Orleans or anyone the Panthers have. But he can't take on Julio Jones or Davante Adams or DIggs 1-1 all game long anymore.

We will beat the Saints with Talib int he playoffs (if the Vikings don't beat them first).

Why was Wades D better last year?

It was better, with what on paper should have been a less talented unit for Wades D, as well as their 1st in a new system.
Considerably stronger play all around, to my eyes.

Did we lose some key leadership or locker room presence in Ogletree, Tru and Quinn?
Why does most of our secondary seem to all have regressed some this year. JJ, LJ and MP espescially.
Cant comment on NRC.
