We all know the offense was and is garbage right now.

My argument is simple: The Defense was on the field last, with the lead and proceeded to let Tampa move like they hadn't done all damn day long. 60 yards in 38 seconds.

To that point, unbelievable as it sounds both sides of the ball had done enough for the win. And then out comes the 10 yd cushion on Scotty Miller. I swear, it was like watching the last 1:40 of SB 36...
It was bad.

The Rams lost because the offense was/is a complete disaster.

On offense... The playcalls are just completely predictable. Run and pass plays are telegraphed. It's like the game a few years back where the 9ers just sat back and almost knew our plays before the ball was snapped.

We have about 6 plays we run. Teams easily sniff out our screen passes. Our RBs seem to run RIGHT INTO THE DEFENSE.... Make a cut to the OUTSIDE for Christ sake. The jet sweep to Kupp is also telegraphed. There is ZERO creativity. It's like McVay expects perfect execution to win out over the defense.

But the defense has actually GAME PLANNED for these exact plays. There is no creativity on offense. The defense just sits on our same 6 plays....pins their ears back and tees off. Changes needed to be made in training camp.... Much less 9 weeks in. We'll see if McVay has the balls to actually take action

It's clear they don't think the CBs can cover. Never minding that one is a sure-fire HOFer. The 10 yd cushions are an attempt to hide it but by "solving" that problem it creates a host of others.
This is the conclusion.
It made some sense when they were depleted with injuries.
Hill was back and played well.
Seems strange to me as the back end seemed to be a strong suit of the D this year.
The bend don't break and hold to FGs would work well if the O was still putting up 30 points a game.....its not....adjust.

What is interesting is that the Rams' soft defensive scheme has been getting more and more national media attention (see: criticism). Curious if that sparks changes.
I hope it does. Not saying we shouldn't run it at all but we should be mixing in other looks based on the situation. The cushions would work a lot better if our team overall was awesome at tackling which we are not. This is why I'm a true believer in mixing it up. The cushion can be the base defense if that's what they want, but we need variety.

If only there were more RAMS fans in the crowd.... We would have been able to put up more of a fight. Since last week's loss was a result of too many 9er fans in the crowd....amirite? :sunglasses:

They should have left Akers in LA. Why even bring him along to Tampa?
Right after Hendo gets a couple of great runs McVay puts in Akers. That was a huge error.
McVay needs to grasp getting players up to speed. He needs to play his starters in the pre season more and he needs to stick with a RB that's getting yardage and give him the ball. Wear down the opponent with hard running. Then hit them downfield with Stafford's arm.

@El Chapo Jr you're right, NO diversity on offense or Defense

It's like BOTH offense and defense are too stubborn too make ANY changes. We BARELY scraped by and lucked out to win our last 3 games last year. And we just continue to do the SAME things with NO wrinkles to our offense or defense at all. Our plays and schemes are not foolproof! Do the coaches think that good execution is just going to magically win out week after week? Clearly, it hasnt. Everyone else can see it ...why can't the coaches.

I do think lack of preseason work is a liability now... Funny how that works..

We honestly need to do what the Bengals did this offseason in free agency. We just need to go after offensive lineman and a running back that can break tackles. Our secondary should get better as we have a lot of young players back there. Pretty sad to even be talking about this after week 9.

The Rams made it to the Super Bowl because of a dropped Int. It's football, these things happen. Luck does play a role.
True, but let's stop with the idea that it was a great goal
line stand.

The Bucs went right down the field on that drive and in your words, the Rams got lucky.

So what do they do on the
next drive? Deploy the exact same scheme, let them get out of bounds, go 60 yards in 36 seconds, but this time not so lucky.

Sure.

Except the Rams have used that tactic to keep teams *out of the end zone* all season long. Statistically.. they have given up close to the fewest touchdowns and points, per game *on defense* in the NFL this year.

That's just a fact, despite people not liking what it looks like.

The offense? Is in the bottom three.

Yeah, this is one year I would just say fuck trying to get the comp picks and instead go get some FAs that can help this team, especially on the OL. Go get some road graders.

Besides, we have (at least for now) a first rounder in the next season after that, 2024.

Rams rank 21st in ppg game on defense.

The defense is good enough if our offense was anywhere near what it was in the past

but the defense gets no pass rush and creates no turnovers - its average.

I really feel like you're defending the defense by calling out flaws in the offense. Both can be true.

In fact, IMO, the flaws I've pointed out in defensive scheme pale in comparision to the woes on offense. That just isn't the topic of the post.

I'm not sure you'd find a sane person to claim the offense has less to clean up than the defense. Not even close. But the D is not perfect, and I'd love to see them change up their scheme when the situation demands it.

No, they don't.
The team ranks 21st in ppg against.. the defense is top ten...

From Jourdan today in the Athletic:

Overall, their defense specifically is allowing 17.8 points per game (this subtracts offensive/special teams turnovers that lead to points), which is sixth-best in the NFL.

So, again.. the defense is doing its job well.

If my business was struggling... and I had one employee who is a catastrophe and one who is doing a solid job... Am I firing both of them?
It's the vent thread.. people are venting about the D.. I get it.. I'm venting about why they're losing games.

Fair enough. No doubt with the offense performing as expected, we're sitting 6-2 or better right now.

The Rams are in a perfect shit storm where the offense is both the reason we are losing and not winning games. It mostly can be attributed to the o-line and Mcvay's stubbornness. The defense is absolutely not losing games for us but at the same time schematically does not win one for us either.
