If we keep Powell, do we go 7 WR?

Kupp
Robinson
Jefferson
Skowronek
Atwell
Harris

7. Powell

Then we need to take from another group. Do the Rams go 2 QB’s?

It does seem like Powell has shown enough (from JR's most recent article) on offense that unless he falls apart at KR/PR (or Atwell just blows by him in the next few weeks on ST) that he's got a spot.

Everything depends on Jefferson's health, of course, but it sure looks like they'll keep 7 here. Best case scenario for this group and others is they showcase Perkins in PS. There was the most minuscule scenario where Perkins would beat out Wolford and I think that ship has sailed and the most likely scenario has always been to flip him for a low round future pick (2024/25 7th or something). I think there's a chance that could happen this year if he showcases nicely in preseason. Otherwise, I could see him getting cut and them trying to get him through waivers. The opportunity cost of keeping him as a 3rd this year just might not be there now that they will without a doubt know what his ceiling is through this camp.

I am looking forward to seeing Wolford and Perkins this preseason.

I find myself rooting for Perkins. I like his scrambling better and I think thats a big part of a backup QB’s game.

The backup is going to be rusty, it sure helps if you can steal a few first downs with runs. And, thats not Stafford’s game so it’s a good jolt to the game planning against our O (they wouldn’t have prepared for a scrambler). This can be exploited and give us a shot for a short stretch of backup play.

But maybe that sounds better in MY head.

Powell made returns exciting. I think he sticks.

Atwell can probably get decent at kick returns, but he will never be Powell. Powell has that ability to read the lanes in front of him, fast. It’s pretty damn noticeable the extra instincts he has at it.

Nobody is perfect at it, but he was damn good last year.
Coach Decamillis in his press conference the other day said that the return specialist must be able to contribute on either offense or defense to make the team.

Thats a good point. He did.

And Powell only has 52 career returns. His resume is lean. Dude needs to bust his butt, but that too seems to be there.

Going to be fun to watch this play out in preseason.

After the young guys in the secondary I'm most interested in the WR and RB bottom of the group who I think will battle it out for the return spots too. Going to be a fun camp.

Ditto @OldSchool

Do you think the Punter competition is real? I am looking forward to this battle, but I think its Dixon 90%. Dicker would need to blow it out.

But @Selassie I was telling me all about his favorite kickers the other day. We should ask him more about this.

Yeah I think those two are pretty even from what I red it'll come down to holding for Matty Gay.

I think so. And I would opt for Perkins if it's close because I think he might be able to stay healthy. Wolf will just get hurt, at least I don't trust that he could string say 5 games together. He'd be out from concussion before he gets through a few of them.

Get well soon Van. Time for Skowronek or Harris to step up

One thing to consider, Wolford runs both scout team and 2nd team offense (and apparently is a crazy good scout team QB). Many teams have a practice squad QB or 3rd string QB run scout team and most QBs are unable to process both. I highly doubt Perkins can. Most QBs can't. It's a net plus that I don't think Perkins can provide. Not impossible for him to but the Rams are constantly on the razors edge of gaining every little advantage and this is one of those.

Wolf is smart as hell. There's no doubt about that. I think he's got the offense mastered too tbh.

But I don't think the scout team is going to save him if the kid can show he's close to him in effectiveness off the bench. And he's going to have all preseason to show it.

If Wolf kicks his ass or if Perkins can't beat him out so be it. But to me this feels like an appropriate window for the kid QB to show what he can do and if he can't challenge for that backup job they probably have the wrong guy.

Totally fair, I think this is the time for Perkins to show what he has (to us and to possible suitors). We kept him for a reason, I don't think he'll show enough for us but if does, maybe we flip Wolf for a pick!

I agree. He’s JAG…but every team needs JAG’s. Not everyone can develop into a superstar.

We here at ROD had high hopes for you Loyal but every board needs a blind homer.

I think you guys are right. There is a reason McVay appears sold too.

I think they kept Perkins last year because they felt he wouldnt make it to PS. I had hoped for them to design some plays for him, wildcat type etc but it's not likely to have 3 QB active on gameday.
The dollars and cents bit, Wolford is a UFA after the season, Perkins is a ERFA, so basically *IF* Perk were to make the 53 and stay on it this year, they'd have him in '23 for 1 mill if they so desired.
So my guess would be, outside of injury or just dreadful play, they both make team and then in '23 Perkins is backup and they draft a QB to be #3 for a year

Gotta get new glasses. I thought for sure you said “rectum specialist.”
