Probably the best way to make it a fair OT would be to give each team a possession with no punts allowed. Each possession would begin with a kick off. If still tied, do it again.

the problem I have with giving both teams a possession when the first team scores a td is that now the second team is in 4 down mode the entire time which gives them an unfair advantage in attempting to score their td. It's much harder to stop a team from getting 10 yards when they have 4 downs instead of 3 the whole way down the field. I'd leave it the way it is. If your defense can't stop a td at that point, than you shouldn't win the game.

The college OT abomination turns the game into something different. Fuck that. The rules should remain the same in OT... otherwise it's not real football.

The best way to protect the integrity of the game is to add on another whole quarter. Maybe take all timeouts away in that quarter, but don't change anything else. For regular season games... if the game is still tied at the end of the additional quarter - The game ends in a tie. For playoff games... an additional quarter that is only half the length of a normal quarter is added on... and this process repeats until one team has more points than the other at the end of an overtime quarter.

Teams that want to cry about playing in extended length games should just start going for 2 points every time they score a TD and shut the fuck up.

That's the correct way to do it.

All other options take away from the game's integrity.

I would actually prefer they follow something along the lines of college football.

Both teams get the ball, opportunities and requirements change the farther you go.

Haha. How board are the giants players when they're more into rock scissors paper than their own game. No wonder they suck.

My suggestion. OT should just be kickers making field goals starting at the 5 yard line. Every time both teams make the FG, move the ball back 5 yards and kick it again.

Now that would feel like sudden death and puts the "foot" back in football.

It looks like there is some momentum for an update to the NFL overtime rules. It's possible these changes only apply to the playoffs, where 10 of the last 12 OT playoff games have been won buy the team that won the coin flip.
They need to change the rule. It was always based on a misplaced concern for shortening OT, not respect for the actual game.

Bills losing to the Chiefs in OT showed how the dead hand of a wrong rule brought a dismal end to what might otherwise have been the greatest playoff game ever.

On the merits it's always argued that if a team gives up a TD on the first drive they deserve to lose. This is misplaced too.

Football is about both sides of the ball. Lots of teams have had weak defenses and great offenses, or vice versa. Both sides of both teams need to play in OT to determine who is really better.

Otherwise the coin flip can determine the winner. Just as it did in the Kansas City- Buffalo game.

And the fact that the Bengals, who had a worse defense than the Bills statistically, turned around and stopped the Chiefs the following week in the same situation means.....?

I dont understand why they just dont allow both teams a possession. And then sudden death.
The idea that scoring a TD is immediate win just doesnt make sense.
It's essentially a brand new game once overtime begins. So it should resemble a game, albeit a super condensed one

Change nothing, and if I'm the NFL, I start threatening to go back to straight up sudden death with a FG if people keep bitching.

Defense matters. If you don't think you can stop the other team, do something different. If the Bills were really afraid they couldn't stop the Chiefs, go for 2 so you're up by more than 3.

Or, you know, play defense for THIRTEEN seconds.

Start OT with an onside kick (so the Chiefs have a shorter field, thus less plays for your defense and less risk of them getting even more tired) and call timeouts frequently to rest them.

There are so many things the Bills could have done differently, fuck changing the rules for one game.

The only thing I'd really be okay with is a "halftime" between end of the game and OT. Even saying it lasts a full quarter is a step too far because...then what? What if the Bills and Chiefs each get one possession each OT period and it goes on forever? The longer it goes, the less likely the defense is to make a play right? That's the whole crux of this argument.

IF we went to a full OT quarter, if its still tied, I say let the kickers decide it with the football FG equivalent of a shootout.

Kansas City didnt have to play defense, so to your point both teams should be required to play defense

People would just bitch that the Chiefs and Bills both scored a TD and then the Chiefs drive right down and score. People will always bitch about it.

And people will bitch about people complaining about it?
Frankly, I dont agree with your strawman statement, I think many folks were satisfied with the change to the current format, so further improvement I believe would be appreciated.
Neither team could stop the other, I believe it was 5 straight scoring drives after the 2 minute warning. But one team was rewarded by not having to play D.

Been saying it for years...rugby scrum to gain possession ..first team to score TD wins

Coin toss alternatives.

The team with the most yardage in the game gets the ball first

The away team gets the ball first

When you win the opening coin toss - you can opt to take the ball first in OT - giving the other team the choice to take the ball in first or second half plus pick their direction

The team that scored first gets the ball first

The team with the lightest player on the roster gets it first. (Go Tutu!!)

Give both teams a possession.

The team that scores last in regulation, starts on defense.

Get the luck of the toss out of the equation.

I like the idea to start with ball on 20/25, but I think kicking it away feels like the best. Special teams is part of the game, it should be part of OT.
