You are right in a way...But my Grandpa was climbing of the steaming hot sands of Iwo Jima in WW2, and I can tell you that "piece of cloth" helped guys survive a hell on earth that few of us can imagine. "That piece of cloth" wasn't just nice ideal, it mattered for itself.

Did the piece of cloth matter or did what it represented matter? If you replaced the piece of cloth with a different piece of cloth that represented the same thing, would they have fought like hell? Absolutely. And I think the worst part of all this is the fact that Kaepernick didn't damage the flag in his protest. He didn't go stomp on it, he didn't go cut it into pieces, he didn't go pee on it, he just took a knee on the sidelines quietly and peacefully. And he took a knee because he took the time to speak to a veteran and was told that was the most respectful way to protest.

For all the hate Kaepernick got, the man at least took the time to listen respectfully. I'm not here to piss on the flag, but when people are protesting because we're failing to live up to our values, I am less concerned with a piece of cloth than I am ensuring that we live up to our word as a nation. Brees shot from the hip, and he's quickly finding out that some of his teammates feel he needs to have a conversation with them to better understand the issue. I hope he does.

I was commenting on the flag, and not about shitty Kaepernick. As for my example at Iwo, Marines who could not even squat to take a shit, had to defecate and piss in their pants for days on end, or else they'd be killed like their buddy who tried to so.. They didn't think about how great Old Glory is/was....They were not allowed to sleep, because Japanese soldiers had a commitment to kill 10 Marines before they were allowed to die, and so they waited for Marines at night to sleep and came out of their tunnels to stab Marines in their sleep. At the end, the Japanese forced Marines to kill almost every one of 25,000 Japanese on the Island.

I don't know how they came out of this place sane.....But when that piece of cloth rose on Mt Suribachi, a roar of the Marines lying in their shit and despair, rang throughout the island. THAT'S why that Iwo Jima raising of the flag is memorialized. I'm old Jrry, and I'm a historian...The words and heart of the veterans are almost gone to the grave. That "piece of cloth" is sacred to me

I bet NBC is having second thoughts on having him be the color commentator to replace Collinsworth

My friend, the Constitution is sacred to me. For me, the Constitution will always trump the flag.

I saw a person say that they wouldn't be surprised if Brees is gearing up to go into politics after he retires. That would make sense.

I hope Goff can find a better way around this question. If it caused duress for Brees and the Aints then every reporter working the NFL will be wanting to ask that question, fishing for some stories, or trying to create some.

Goff is pretty media savvy, would be surprised if he fell into the trap Brees did.

Is the Constitution violated when conservatives are banned from twitter for specious reasons? No, because it's a private business/platform.

Are NFL owners violating the Constitution when they prevent Kaep from doing his protest? He could do it on the property outside of the stadium, but no, he wants the attention for doing so on live tv. Strawman argument, jrry. It's not really about the flag here, it's about the right of an employer to control his workspace.

IE..employees can't do whatever they want in their workplace without consequences.

How this thread feels.

I’ll just say this, When you disrespect the flag you disrespect the ones who gave their life for you to be a spoiled bitch and enjoy that very freedom to protest and burn, disrespect, or belittle.

No country is without faults, and this country has plenty, past and present.

When you belittle the flag and what we are together you break that apart.

Seriously, these bitches doing this move to another country. They won’t because they know better or haven’t done shit in their life where they can’t.

I’ve been to a lot of places in this world and seen a ton of cultures around the world, there are a ton of good ones out there, but I wouldn’t trade ours overall.

Being in the cyber security business, it’s amazing how people don’t see the bots, money, and algorithms that are causing a divide in this country because to many dumb fuckers won’t get off Twitter, Facebook, and whatever else.

I'm not talking about the First Amendment. I'm talking about the Equal Protection Clause. That's why people are protesting. That's why Kaepernick protested. Yes, Kaepernick wanted attention, as does any other protest. He used the platform he had. I am tired of the flag distraction. This is about demanding that we hold ourselves to the promises we made in our Constitution.

So does a black employee who is fired because he offended a customer have the right to sue under the 14th Amendment? He no longer has the opportunity to excel in his job...The employer is not providing him the opportunity to express himself, however inappropriately?

This is irrelevant. We're talking about why they're protesting, not about whether Kaepernick could protest while working without suffering consequences.

I've never heard or read one sensible argument that explains how taking a knee during the national anthem as a player during a sporting event is disrespectful to the flag and/or troops. It's "land of the free" and not "land of the as-long-as-you-do-what-I-agree-with." But who cares. Stand for the flag, kneel for the flag, jog for the flag, whatever. That's the POINT.

It's just a little tone deaf for Brees to say what he said at this time.

This is where we devolve into politics, because I believe that everyone has opportunity and are allowed to "pursue happiness.", but no one is guaranteed equal results due to different abilities. Kaep was an ok QB, but not that good. Certainly no team should be forced to sign him.
Nice points, I never thought about the 14th Amendment in the argument. It's too bad that the Amendment was useless for almost a century due to the North being weary of well doing, and the pullout of troops in the crooked bargain between the Rutherford Hayes vs Tilden scandal (Union troops left the South in the deal to make Hayes President).

.

Why do they play the national anthem before games anyway? It's almost fascist in intent.

It's weird to people that don't live in America.
