Tre Mason breaks silence, trashes Rams

Still calling schizophrenia. Even treated guys are still out of touch with what most people would call reality.

Just because a guy from bleacher report can spin a lucid article from the guy doesn't mean that he isn't off his rocker. Hell I have a buddy from high school who when off his meds is convinced he is equals with Hercules (the cartoon movie interestingly enough) and even on his meds feels that way but can at least spot how crazy some of the stuff he says is.

That isn't the Tre Mason who played at Auburn nor the man the Rams drafted.

Such a sad read. When I saw the article, I really thought he was better, but then I started reading and realised that there was something still seriously off with him. There sounds like there is something wrong - whether it's addiction based or mental health based - confidence and ego are acceptable with sportsmen & women, you need that to succeed at your sport - however, IMO, Mason has a skewed vision of reality and how he should be treated - life doesn't come on a platter, you have to work for it and sometimes that 'work' comes in the form of 'fitting in' to an organisation. He wanted special treatment, he didn't get it, he threw his toys out of the pram and mentally couldn't deal with the rejection he felt from the Rams when they drafted Gurley. He could have manned up stayed on the roster and he would have had his runs - or kept his head down, worked hard and gave another team an incentive to sign him.

He needs to admit to the fact that he needs help, as soon as he gets that I'm sure he'll be a more rounded human, forget about football for a bit, enjoy the spoils of the season you've had, but seek help and get mentally healthy.

I hope Snead learned something from his evaluations of Mason and GRob. Like maybe to stop favoring players from your alma mater, or stop kissing Auburn football's ass so you can be a bigwig alum. Or maybe, do a better job on the mental/emotional side of things instead of being in awe of physical traits only.

I recall reading that Snead was one of the leaders in embracing the newer tools available, like the aptitude test to see if a player is suited to the NFL grind. He really had some big swings and misses when it comes to figuring out desire and maturity. Or was it more Fisher's doing? I bet Les would say so.

The perfect storm @Elmgrovegnome Snead was an alum and you can be blinded by the light combined with Jeff Fisher's son Trent being a member of the Auburn's National Championship Team so that was a major factor too. FWIW's never was a fan of Mason's, he was too small for my liking and when the Rams drafted the bigger Gurley, instead of stepping up, Mason stepped down.

I concur about Snead though and the irony is the Rams have two guys from Auburn that have a good chance come this summer in Blake Countess (not a fan FWIW) and Cassanova McKinzy and how can you not like a Cassanova???? My Uncle still has one.

Lets get things straight about Mason & GRob.

GRob WAS the highest graded LT prospect during his draft year on MANY boards with his college tape being quoted as reminding people of Orlando Pace - on paper and on tape, he looked like a solid starter, even though he was extremely raw. Unfortunately, we were one of those teams with the need for a LT, we rolled the dice, it didn't work out, he had the tools, the opportunity, it just didn't click with him and we suffered by result. If we hadn't selected him, he definitely wouldn't have lasted to #10.

FWIW, I wasn't a fan of the pick when it happened, due to his raw-ness, but I could understand that his upside and potential was phenomenal.

Mason was also a Rd2 projected player, with comparisons to Ray Rice & LeSean McCoy so in hindsight picking him up in the 3rd was good value for money. He had a great Rookie year, and could have gone on to have a good career, but I think there were / are too many things not right somewhere.

Plenty of GMs and HCs lay duds on players, not all picks can turn into Pro Bowlers and I don't think that no tool, test or analytic can determine if a player WILL be a success in the NFL - there are too many tangibles to consider.

I don't recall hearing it from the Rams, but reading that article... they HAD to see some warning signs in his behaviour.

And... it's probably THE reason Gurley was a target and selected.

True - and for all his faults Fisher seemed to be a caring kind of guy that often took gambles on character issue players (Janoris etc) - he even pulled in Titus Young for a quick workout.

There must have been something, as you say to warrant them taking Gurley - we know Stacy had knee (?) issues, there must have been red-flags with Mason. On several occasions we've heard / read Fisher commenting on focussing on him getting better and to not worry about football. But The seemed to think everyone else was in the wrong and making things up...

All I know is Snisher has ruined me on Auburn players for a long time. 30 years from now if I'm blessed to still be alive and the NFL still exists if I hear the Rams selected a player from Auburn I'm going to throw my dentures at the tv and scream "Didn't they learn anything from that basket case RB and stone footed tackle they took 30 years ago!?!?!?! dagnabit!!".

There have been some good Auburn players drafted into the NFL. Cam Newton, Karlos Dansby, and Nick Fairley come to mind. It's just that Snead picked the wrong ones.

I said it many times... Fisher cared more about raw physical talent than other traits (intelligence, discipline, pro system experience, etc.).

Guys like Quick, Austin, Robinson, Mason, Goff.

All these guys were/are great physical specimens with raw talent but all were/are gambles because they were/are going to need a lot (more than others) of extra coaching to get them to the NFL level.

I don't really see how you put Goff in that same grouping. His athleticism, arm strength, etc. don't leap off the page at you, at least not compared to other NFL quarterbacks. Tre Mason didn't have amazing physical traits either.

The concern with Goff is that he never operated out of as huddle. He's not the only one that comes over via the spread... but he might be the first #1 overall QB to come that way? And, of course, they gave up so much to get him with this skill set missing.

Ever heard of Marcus Mariota? He would've been the #1 overall pick if it wasn't for Winston and he's been very good so far in the NFL. Goff may have more of a learning curve than most but scheme isn't everything.

Nothing wrong with that way of drafting as long as you have someone to coach them up. Good assistant coaches are way underrated. Fisher seemed to think he could take just about any athlete and turn him into a good NFL player. He was wrong.

I said it many times... Fisher cared more about raw physical talent than other traits (intelligence, discipline, pro system experience, etc.).

Guys like Quick, Austin, Robinson, Mason, Goff.

All these guys were/are great physical specimens with raw talent but all were/are gambles because they were/are going to need a lot (more than others) of extra coaching to get them to the NFL level.

Donald, Ogletree, Gurley, Brockers, Janoris could also fit into the category of "great physical specimens with raw talent that were gambles" these ones paid off big time.

I mean look at Gerald Freakin' Everett, this year's top pick -- raw athleticism all day long. I think he scored a 24 on the wonderlic test. It's a gamble.

So does that make McVay the same as Fisher?

Lets get things straight about Mason & GRob.

GRob WAS the highest graded LT prospect during his draft year on MANY boards with his college tape being quoted as reminding people of Orlando Pace - on paper and on tape, he looked like a solid starter, even though he was extremely raw. Unfortunately, we were one of those teams with the need for a LT, we rolled the dice, it didn't work out, he had the tools, the opportunity, it just didn't click with him and we suffered by result. If we hadn't selected him, he definitely wouldn't have lasted to #10.

FWIW, I wasn't a fan of the pick when it happened, due to his raw-ness, but I could understand that his upside and potential was phenomenal.

Mason was also a Rd2 projected player, with comparisons to Ray Rice & LeSean McCoy so in hindsight picking him up in the 3rd was good value for money. He had a great Rookie year, and could have gone on to have a good career, but I think there were / are too many things not right somewhere.

Plenty of GMs and HCs lay duds on players, not all picks can turn into Pro Bowlers and I don't think that no tool, test or analytic can determine if a player WILL be a success in the NFL - there are too many tangibles to consider.

Taking raw physical freaks as the overriding plan is a flawed way of thinking. The head has as much to do with football as the body. Tavon still can't run an NFL route right. Jenkins admitted that he would let up on some plays, which cost games repeatedly.. Quick was referred to as too dumb for football by a scout from somewhere. GRob doesn't seem to have the brains or the desire.

Sure GRob was highly touted but it wasn't because of his head or his heart. It was his physical ability. He was an incredible gamble with the 2nd overall pick, because there was zero evidence that he could pass block. Everyone knows the draft has hits and misses. Forcing a pick like a second overall is foolish, especially for a raw player like GRob. Players like him and Quick are projects. Why take a project so high? Then GRob admits to not working hard his first year, and apparently the new staff didn't like his attitude in OTAs. He lacks desire and intelligence.

Mason was a decent pick from our perspective, but why did he drop to run 3 with a second round projection and comparisons to Ray Rice. I am willing to bet most GMs didn't like the mental make up.

Figuring out a players desire and stability, is one of the toughest parts of drafting, but if it is very important not to overlook those things because a guy is a freak athlete, especially on offense.
