Let's face it...something wasn't right between Gurley and McVay, but Gurley handled it pretty well.

McVay would easily forget Gurley and get pass happy...and then there's the "knee mystery". It was kept "in house"...and really...I still ain't sure of the whole scenari.

The Falcons have a baller now...and the Rams have some more cash flow...

We wait...

Thanks for the explanation that does clear up things regarding the term dogmatic. However, I have to disagree, these RBs always seems less productive after they sign their second contract. They may remain somewhat serviceable but are not what their were the first four years. I don't have the stats but would be interested to see the drop off after five years with Dickerson, Jackson, and Faulk.

It's a shame two of Todd's years wasted in the Fisher era. If only Mcvay could've had healthy Gurley those extra two years.

Well, Faulk's first five years were in Indianapolis. 1999-2001, after the Rams gave him the richest contract in team history, were years 6-8. Dickerson won another rushing title after he left the Rams. Jackson had four more 1000 yard seasons and two Pro Bowls in his sixth through ninth year.

There are others. Adrian Peterson, two rushing titles and three Pro Bowls in years 6-9. Fred Taylor, four 1000 yard seasons from years 6-10.

There aren't many backs like the ones mentioned but when you have an All Pro, HOF type you don't have to shy away from making a long term commitment.

You're right, it's not uncommon.

It is what it is with that position, you can learn fast and play early, so you're an ideal draft pick in terms of cap savings.

On top of that your body gets banged up pretty quickly, and it's hard to remain resilient, especially with regard to performance to cost justify that contract when you finally get the big bucks.

Your observation isn't inaccurate, and we like to learn from experience, but I never say never :)

Falcons still haven’t announced Todd Gurley deal

The news that the Falcons have agreed to terms with a former XFL player raised an interesting point regarding a much more high profile acquisition that the Falcons have made during the ongoing free agency period.

The Falcons have said not a word about agreeing to terms with running back Todd Gurley.

The revised rules of the 2020 offseason, as influenced by the coronavirus pandemic, permit teams to announce a deal before a contract is signed and before a physical is conducted. Other teams (like the Texans as to receiver Randall Cobb) have done it. The Falcons have chosen otherwise as to Gurley.

Even if/when Gurley officially signs, his one-year contract surely will hinge on passing a physical with the Falcons. And that physical won’t be administered until Gurley, who remains in L.A., can travel to Atlanta for full and complete examination by team doctors.

In the interim, the deal could (in theory) fall through. The Ravens were supposed to be signing Rams defensive lineman Michael Brockers, and then before the deal was done, Brockers ended up back with the Rams. Although there’s currently no reason to think that kind of L.A. lightning will strike again, no NFL deal is done until it’s done. So until the Gurley-to-Falcons deal is done, a Gurley-back-to-Rams deal could still happen.

Gurley may not be inclined to do that, for a couple of reasons. On the surface, his claim that he didn’t see his release coming seems ridiculous. At a deeper level, and as Peter King explained it on Friday’s PFT Live, it’s possible that Gurley truly didn’t see it coming because coach Sean McVay has an ultra-positive, upbeat, rah-rah-go-go attitude that never revealed to Gurley any hint that he was anything other than McVay’s guy. If so, Gurley may have a hard time rebuilding trust with his former team, if his former team decides to try to pry him away from the Falcons.

Then there’s the fact that, if he ultimately fails his Falcons physical, Gurley arguably will be entitled to another $10.5 million in guaranteed money from the Rams, since the money the Rams avoided owing Gurley by cutting him on March 19 was guaranteed for injury.

Bottom line: No deal is done until it’s done. And Gurley’s deal with the Falcons isn’t done. And things could get interesting if for some reason it never gets done.

How about Gurley fails his physical and returns to the Rams? And, then both Gurley and Brockers end up having great ALL-PRO seasons helping the Rams win the Super Bowl?!! All is right in the World again! Ok, I live in a Fantasy World but it is nice to dream!!!

.

i'll definitely be happy if the deal falls through. don't see why it will though as gurley wasn't injured, just a little constricted.
